Plus, why you don't see the "Call" option in your TikTok app
PDF download Download Article

You've probably seen TikToks that say you can now call people in the app if you take certain steps. As of now, there is still no option to call on TikTok like you can in Instagram, Messenger, and other apps. This may be rolled out at some point, but for now, it's just a rumor. What you can do is invite guests to video chat with you on TikTok LIVE, which is like a video call in front of whoever's watching your stream. For a more private alternative, you and a friend can send voice or video messages back and forth in your DMs. Read on to learn how!

How do you call someone on TikTok?

TikTok doesn't have a "Call" option, but they might add it in the future. In the meantime, there are other ways to chat with friends with voice and video. If you use TikTok LIVE, you can use the multi-guest feature to do video calls with guests. Alternatively, you can send voice and video messages through DMs.

Call On TikTok LIVE with Multi-Guest

  1. Social media creator Daniel Lee confirms that TikTok LIVE's multi-guest feature makes it possible to video call another TikTok user in your stream![1] You can also allow people watching your live stream to request a call, which you can then accept while you're streaming.[2]
    • To go live, you'll need to be 18 or older and have at least 1000 followers. If your follower count just isn't there yet, check out our guide to going live on TikTok without 1000 followers!
    • To start your live stream, tap + at the bottom of the TikTok app, select LIVE, enter your preferences, and tap Go LIVE.[3]
  2. Once you're live, you'll need to make a quick change to your settings before you can call someone or accept a call request:[4]
    • Tap Guests at the bottom of your stream.
    • To allow all viewers to request a voice or video call, enable Allow requests from viewers.
    • Alternatively, if you only want people who follow you to be able to request a call, enable Allow requests from followers only.

  3. You can customize where you and your caller will appear on the screen in the Guests area. Once you're finished customizing these settings, you're ready to make your first call!
    • For one-on-one calls, TikTok recommends using the Panel layout, as it keeps you on the main screen alongside the person you're calling.[5]
    • To give your guests more space on the screen, or if you want to do a group-style call, opt for the Grid layout.
    • The Fixed layout option keeps your layout the same, no matter how many people are participating in the call.
  4. Tap Guests at the bottom again, then tap Invite. From here, you can choose one or more people to invite to join your LIVE. Once they tap Accept and then Go LIVE, they'll join your stream like a video call.[6]
    • You can disconnect the call at any time by tapping Guests at the bottom, then selecting Disconnect next to the person you're talking to.

Send Voice and Video Messages on TikTok

  1. Even though there's no option to make a voice or video call in a TikTok chat, you can send a voice or video message via DM. If you and your friend are online at the same time, you can send video and voice chats back and forth, which is the next best thing to a live call!
    • To open a DM, tap the Inbox icon at the bottom of the TikTok app, then tap the name of the person you want to call.
  2. If it's your first time using the microphone in the TikTok app, you'll be prompted to give the app permission to use it. When you're finished recording, tap Send (the paper airplane icon) to share your voice message in the chat.[7]
    • If you change your mind about the recording, tap the trash icon to delete it.
    • The option to record a voice message isn't available everywhere.
  3. When you tap the camera, the TikTok camera screen will appear, focused on the front camera. If you want, you can select a filter to apply before you start recording. To record, tap and hold the record button.
    • Lift your finger to stop recording. Then, you can customize your voice message with all of TikTok's effects, sounds, and more.
    • After you're finished customizing your video message, tap Send to send it.
