In anime and manga, deres are character archetypes. Some deres are pretty common, while others are more specific and might only have one or two characters. We’re doing a deep dive into the 20 most popular dere types, plus sharing an overview of 30 more dere types anime fans should know about. Let’s get started!

   Deredere Deredere characters are the most basic dere type. They’re sweet, loving, and comfortable showing their feelings to their love interest. They’re the embodiment of healthy connections—they’re usually selfless in their relationships and don’t have the jealousy or pretense you see in some of the other deres.

   Dandere Dandere gets its name from the Japanese word “danmari,” which means someone who keeps silent. Fittingly, these characters are extremely shy, timid, and insecure. They may apologize frequently and often have trouble expressing themselves, but they do sometimes open up around the object of their affection.

   Yandere Yandere are obsessed with their love interest to the point that it becomes unhealthy. They often seem loving and warm at first, but they gradually reveal a dangerous side. They’re typically willing to do anything to get the object of their affection, including stalking, kidnapping, or even murder.

Instead, they have a quiet confidence that sets them apart from others. But when they do find the right person, they can build a strong, healthy relationship together.

   Bakadere Bakadere—sometimes called ahoderes—are adorable, but they aren’t the brightest of the bunch—especially when it comes to love. They’re ditsy and clumsy, but also innocent and loving. They’re often impulsive, and they tend to be totally oblivious when another character is interested in them.

   Oujidere An oujidere is a male with a prince complex. These characters arrogantly believe they’re better than everyone else—and they expect to be treated that way, especially by their love interests. Some characters act this way to cover up feelings of insecurity or fears of abandonment, but others are just entitled.

   Himedere Himedere are the female equivalent of oujideres. These princess-types expect the royal treatment, and they usually come across as arrogant, aloof, and spoiled. In other words, you’re probably not going to see them getting their hands dirty. They do sometimes soften up when they get close to their love interests, though.

This character shifts between sweet and caring to mischievous and even malicious, all in the blink of an eye.     Mayadere A mayadere has a classic villain-to-love interest arc. They start out as a scary or intimidating antagonist. But once they fall in love, they join the hero’s team to be a force of good. The term also sometimes applies to someone who looks scary, but who is actually sweet.

    Bodere A bodere (or bokodere) character is fairly shy—but unlike the more classically shy dandere, when a bodere feels embarrassed by attention from their crush, they lash out physically. Usually, that means hitting or punching their love interest to hide the fact that they secretly have feelings for them! This is a somewhat controversial dere type, since they resort to violence.

1. These dere types are less common, but still iconic. The deres listed above might be the most common character archetypes, but they’re certainly not the only ones. Here’s a list of other dere types that you can find in anime and manga, along with an example of each:

   • Kekkondere: A character who impulsively rushes into marriage.
     • Example: Boa Hancock (One Piece)
   • Sadodere: Sadistic, manipulative characters who torment their love interests.

   • Nemuidere: A character who spends most of their time sleeping or being sleepy.

1. Gap Moe characters experience a transition. A “gap moe character” is one who starts out as one side of their personality, then transforms into another. Gapless characters don’t change at all—they remain steadfast at all times.
