Drawing boots can seem difficult at first glance, but it’s really just a series of curved and straight lines. In this article, we make drawing boots simple by explaining how to draw cowboy boots from the front and from the side, as well as how to draw rain boots and work boots. Read on to learn how to put the perfect pair of boots on a page using our step-by-step tutorials!
How to Draw a Cowboy Boot: Step-by-Step
- Draw an upward-curving arc with two lines coming down from its edges.
- At the end of the left line, draw a horizontal line curving down toward the left of the page.
- Draw a slightly curved vertical line coming from the right line you made in step 1.
- Draw a slightly angled horizontal line from the line you made in step two.
- Connect the two lines you made in steps 4 and 5.
- Draw a small outline of the newly connected bottom lines to make the outsole.
Steps
-
Start by drawing an arc on the top right half of the page. Draw an arc with a slight curve in the top right-hand side of the page. This will create the top of your boot. The ends of the arc will serve as a guideline for the sides of the boot.[1]
-
Draw two lines coming down from the edges of the arc. Draw these lines at an inward angle rather than drawing them completely straight down. Make them the same length to complete the sides of the boot.[2]Advertisement
-
Draw a line toward the left side of the page at a downward angle. Make sure this line is connected to the left line you made in the previous step. Angle the line so that it’s on a downward slope like a triangle. Avoid making any sharp points.[3]
-
Draw a slightly curved line on the right side of your page. Make sure this line is connected to the right line you made in step two. Curve the line toward the left side of the page so that it resembles the heel of a point, like a closed parentheses.[4]
-
Draw a slightly higher slope coming from the line you drew in step 3. Draw this line coming from the downward angle on the left side of the page. Don’t make the new line higher than the previous one, as it’s going to serve as the toe box. Slightly curve it downward until it lines up with the bottom of the heel from the previous step.[5]
-
Make a line connecting the toe and heel. Draw a line going from the toe box you just made on the left to the heel you made on the right. Around halfway through, draw a slight upward curve until you reach the heel. Once these lines connect, you’ll have the outline of your shoe.[6]
-
Draw an outline of the bottom of the shoe to make the outsole. Draw a line going down about 0.25 in (0.64 cm) from the toe box, then curve that line so it’s parallel with the bottom of the shoe. From there, follow the outline of the shoe until you reach the heel. Draw a line about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) down from the heel, then connect that line to the outline.[7]
- Each step after this is an optional design choice. If you prefer to give your boot a unique, personal design, stop with this step and fill in the boot with fun design elements.
- To create the second boot, draw an outline of the right side of the boot just behind the side of the shaft and heel to create the illusion of a second boot.
-
Draw a pointed rectangle at the top of the boot. This will serve as the pull strap (aka the first design element you’re adding to your boot, yay!). Head to the top of the boot (the curved line you made in step one), then draw a pointed rectangle coming down from the center of the curve.[8]
-
Add seams and piping coming from the pull strap. Draw a line coming down from the point of the pull strap. As you reach the foot of the boot, curve this line in the same direction as the heel. This is the side seam of the boot. Head back up to the pull strap and curved lines going from the sides to the edges of the boot. Draw these lines like the top of a heart with a sharp point in the center.[9]
-
Draw a curved line with a straight end near the foot. This is your tongue. Head to the bottom of the shaft just above where the foot starts. Then, draw a downward-angled 0.5 in (1.3 cm) straight line toward the inside of the shoe. At the end of the line, draw a downward curve like you’re drawing a circle. End the curve where the foot meets the shaft on the other side.[10]
-
Add a wingtip on the front of the shoe. The wingtip is an extra design layer on your boots. It’s also a simple element to draw, as it uses that same curved heart-like shape from the piping. Draw that top-heart shape where the toe box curves so that the pointed end is facing the inside of the shoe.[11]
-
Start by drawing two vertical lines that curve outward at the bottom. Draw these lines about 2 in (5.1 cm) away from each other. Toward the bottom, make the right line curve slightly inward before bringing it back out. Make sure when you bring it back out, it lines up with the top half. Make the left line curve outward until it’s slightly past the top point.[12]
-
Connect the two lines at the top with downward angled lines. Make sure these lines are pointing toward the inside of the boot. Draw them at equal lengths so they connect in the center about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) down from where the two vertical lines start.[13]
-
Draw two curved lines toward the end of the shaft. The shaft is the part of the boot that houses your leg above the ankles. At the end of the shaft where the lines begin to curve outward, draw a line that curves up toward the top of the boot before coming back down. Just below that line, draw another line that curves toward the bottom of the shoe.[14]
-
Draw another curved line that connects the two vertical lines made in step 1. Starting at the left line, draw a line that curves down toward the bottom of the paper. Draw a curved half-circle, then bring the line back up. Connect the circle to the right line to create the front of the shoe.[15]
-
Draw an outline of the curved line you made in the previous step. Head just below the curved line you made in the last step and draw another curve outlining it. Keep this outline thin (less than 0.25 in (0.64 cm)), as it will serve as the outsole of your shoe and complete your drawing![16]
-
Start by drawing a curved rectangle with a line coming down from it. Draw a loosely curved rectangle on the top of the page. This will serve as the insert for your feet. Then, on the bottom left side of the rectangle, draw a slightly curved line coming down from it.[17]
-
Add a curved hook shape that tapers into a line coming from the rectangle. Head to the top right corner of the rectangle you just drew and draw a horizontal line that curves down into a vertical line. Hook this vertical line back toward the direction of the rectangle, but don’t close it. Instead, hook it back out to the same length, then draw a curved line going toward the right.[18]
-
Curve the line from the previous step toward the line you made in step 1. Draw a 1 in (2.5 cm) vertical line curving from the line in the previous step. Then, draw a horizontal line that curves from the line you just made toward the line below the rectangle you made in step 1.[19]
-
Draw a small line curving above the hooked shape you made in step 2. Make sure the line is above the hooked shape and rectangle from step 1. Curve the line so that it looks similar to a cliffside. This will serve as the tongue of your boot and help make your drawing look more realistic.[20]
-
Add a line curving into the shape you made in step 3. Head to the bottom right side of your page and draw a line that starts vertically but curves into a horizontal line going toward the left. Curve this line until it reaches the shape you made in step 3. This will serve as the toe cap and base of your shoe.[21]
-
Connect the two lines and draw a rectangle with curved holes. Once you’ve drawn the base of your shoe, connect those vertical lines on the opposite ends of your page. Then, use those lines as the top of your rectangle, drawing two 0.25 in (0.64 cm) to 0.5 in (1.3 cm) lines coming down from them. Connect these lines together, but draw an arch going up every 0.25 in (0.64 cm) to make the curved holes on the sole.[22]
-
Add hollow circles going down the top curve of the boot. Head to the curved shape you made in step 3 and start at the top near the tongue. Draw a hollow circle with a black dot inside of it to create the lace hole. Draw another one beneath it, then continue down until you reach the end of the shape (about 6 holes total).[23]
-
Draw curved black lines coming from the bottom four lace holes. Head to the bottom four lace holes and draw black lines that curve slightly down and toward the right. These will serve as your laces.[24]
- From here, you can add any details you’d like to your boots. Customize them to your heart’s content!
-
Start by drawing two long lines that curve inward. Draw these lines about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) away from each other. Make them about 3 in (7.6 cm) long and make sure they curve toward each other toward the bottom (but not so much that they connect).[25]
-
Connect the lines at the top, then draw a line coming down from the left. Connect the two vertical lines you just made with a horizontal line at the top. Then, head to the bottom of the left line and draw another line angled outward. Make this line about 1.5 in (3.8 cm) long.[26]
-
Add two connecting horizontal lines that curve toward the right. These lines will house the foot of your boot. Start by drawing a sharp horizontal line from the left line you just made, then curve it as you make your way to the right of the page. Draw another horizontal line coming from the right line this time, but start the curve right away. As the curves approach each other, soften your stroke until you connect them.[27]
- At this point, you’ll see the boot start to take form.
-
Recreate the shape you made in the previous 3 steps right next to the boot. Rather than completely redrawing the boot, draw the right and bottom sides of it right next to the boot you just finished. Draw the same vertical curving lines from step 1, the outward curving line and connection from step 2, and the curving horizontal lines from step 3. This will create the illusion of a full second boot that sits behind the first.[28]
-
Connect two rectangles below the bottom of the boots. These rectangles will serve as the sole. Start by drawing a rectangle that comes down about 0.25 in (0.64 cm) from the bottom of the boot, but instead of the rectangle going all the way up on the fourth side, follow the horizontal outline of the bottom of the boot. Add a few more square and rectangle-shaped indents before curving the line back to the toe of the shoe.[29]
- For the second boot, draw a small horizontal outline of the same size to create the illusion of a second sole.

Art educator Eric Gibbons says the best way to draw something new is to study the object and sketch what you see. “Break it down into simple shapes and forms, [then] connect those shapes and forms.” He adds, “When you draw what’s in front of you, you learn more than drawing it out of your head.”[30]Thanks
