Dungeon Crawler Carl is an exciting book series that follows Carl and his (ex-girlfriend’s) cat Princess Donut as they navigate the Apocalypse. There are currently 8 books in the series—which means there are a lot of characters. We put together this guide to help you keep track of the characters while you’re reading or listening to the series, from the members of Carl and Donut’s party to their rival Crawlers and the Admin that run the Dungeon.

Note: There may be some minor spoilers ahead (but we really tried to avoid them because you should read the series).

Section 1 of 4:

Party Members in the Royal Court of Princess Donut

  1. Carl is the main protagonist of Dungeon Crawler Carl. (You probably already guessed that.) He’s muscular, practical, and a former member of the Coast Guard. He survived the Apocalypse (or “Transformation”) that destroyed all human buildings because he went outside to get his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, who’d escaped through an open window.
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 0
  2. Princess Donut is a tortoiseshell Persian show cat. Her full official name is “Grand Champion, Breed Winner Regional, National Winner Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk,” but Princess Donut will do. She’s the first cat to enter the Dungeon, and she gains the ability to talk. She’s the party leader of the Royal Court of Princess Donut (which she named, naturally) and one of the most popular stars on Dungeon Crawler World.
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 1
    • Fun fact: The narrator of the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks, Jeff Hays, has been cast as the voice of Princess Donut in the upcoming live-action adaptation![1]

  3. Mordecai is a former crawler who’s assigned as the party’s game guide. His role is originally to help the party navigate the first three floors of the Dungeon. On the third floor, Carl and Donut convince Mordecai to volunteer as Donut’s talent manager. He gets a new physical form on each floor of the Dungeon.[2]
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 2
  4. Mongo is Princess Donut’s pet velociraptor. Carl and Donut found Mongo in a cage on the Second Floor, at which point Mongo promptly attacked them both. But Donut took a liking to Mongo and adopted him as her pet, gradually training him from a wild beast into a helpful ally.[3]
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 46
  5. Prepotente—or Pony, as Carl usually refers to him—is a goat from Italy. He became a Caprid (a sapient, bipedal goat race) after eating an enchanted pet biscuit given to him by his owner, Miriam. He quickly became a powerful fighter, eventually joining Carl and Donut’s party.
    • First appears in: Book 2, Chapter 14
  6. Katia joins Carl and Donut’s party on the third floor. She’s originally an art professor from Iceland, but she chooses to become a shape-shifting doppelganger. She’s a tanky character, but she starts out timid, weak, and inexperienced. Her character arc is one of the most emotional in the series.[4]
    • First appears in: Book 2, Chapter 21
  7. Samantha is a Withering Spirit trapped in the head of a latex sex doll. Samantha—a Naiad whose real name is Psamathe—was banished to the Nothing after having an affair with a king. (The affair produced her daughter, a sentient sand ooze called Mrs. Ghazi.) She officially joins the party when Donut hires her as a Trainer.[5]
    • First appears in: Book 4, Chapter 24

Crawlers from Other Parties

  1. Lucia Mar is a 13-year-old Crawler from Ecuador. She’s one of the most popular Crawlers on Dungeon Crawler World. Lucia is fearsome and competitive, quickly racking up Player Kill skulls while fighting with her two rottweilers, Cici and Gustavo 3. She might just be a kid, but she’s pretty much a psychopath.
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 14
  2. Hekla is a former Icelandic human who took on an Amazonian form on floor 3 of the Dungeon. She’s the leader of the party Brynhild’s Daughters, a group that initially includes Katia Grim. Hekla is manipulative and cold, and is widely despised by fans for her attempt to betray Carl and steal Princess Donut for her own party.[6]
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 20
  3. Daniel Bautista used to be a mild-mannered tea shop owner from the Philippines. But in the Dungeon, he transforms into a Tigran—a tiger-human hybrid. Bautista entered the Dungeon alongside a large group of his siblings and cousins, but he’s now the only survivor. He fights alongside an army of over 1,000 small plushes.[7]
    • First appears in: Book 2, Chapter 23
  4. Miriam Dom was originally an Italian shepherd who entered the Dungeon with 15 Boer goats. She is caring and kind, and she gives pet biscuits to several of her goats, turning them into Caprids. Most notable of these is Prepontente, who eventually joins Carl’s party.
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 47

Dungeon Admins & AI

  1. System AI is the Dungeon Controller responsible for keeping the Dungeon simulation running. System AI is quirky and unpredictable, and it’s unusually fond of Carl, calling itself Daddy when he’s around and often giving him special items to grant him an advantage in the Dungeon. It also has a thing for feet.
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 1
  2. Cascadia is the Lead Engineer and Executive Producer of Dungeon Crawler World: Earth. She’s a fish-like alien called a Kua-Tin who gives daily announcements to the Crawlers. She’s known for her signature catchphrase, “Now get out there and kill, kill, kill!”[8]
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 14
  3. Odette is the host of Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette, a popular show that interviews Crawlers as they exit a Dungeon floor. Onstage, she wears a bug mask and has the torso of a Black woman and the lower half of a king crab; offstage, she’s just a torso sitting on a floating disc.[9]
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 28
  4. Zev is Carl and Donut’s Outreach Associate, and she’s in charge of their public image. (Carl and Donut do not make this job easy on her.) She’s a Kua-Tin, like Cascadia, and she wears a suit filled with water when on Earth.
    • First appears in: Book 1, Chapter 36

Minor Admin & AI In addition to the Admin & AI listed above, there are also several other characters who play an important role in running the Borant Corporation (and, subsequently, Earth’s Dungeon Simulation). They include:
    • Alexandro: Lucia Mar’s Youth Assistant who’s hiding a secret identity.
    • Loita: A cruel Admin who works for the Borant Corporation.
    • Mukta: A PR Admin who temporarily fills in for Zev while she’s away.
    • Orren: A Syndicate Liaison investigating the death of one of the Admins.
    • Lexis: A production assistant for Dungeon Crawler World.
    • The Eulogist: The Macro AI that controls the Central System. It’s primarily dormant and does not intervene in the game, unlike the System AI.
