If you’re a fan of the Omegaverse, you’re probably very familiar with Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. But sometimes, writers invent their own Omegaverse archetypes, like the mysterious Enigma (a.k.a. the Alpha of the Alphas). In this article, we’ll teach you everything you need to know about this rare dominant type, including what an Enigma is, their traits, how the archetype originated, and more.

The Omegaverse Enigma Explained

Enigmas are an extremely rare Omegaverse archetype that ranks above Alphas. They’re extremely dominant and can even force Alphas to submit to their commands. They’re calm and confident, and don’t lash out like traditional Alphas. Only one Enigma is usually born per generation.

An Enigma is a rare secondary gender ranked above Alphas. In traditional Omegaverse stories, Alphas are at the top of the hierarchy and have the most dominant personalities. Enigmas are a relatively new addition to the lore, and they’re even more dominant than Alphas. Known as the “Alphas of Alphas,” Enigmas have extreme pheromone power and can impregnate anyone, including Alphas.^{[1]

- In the Omegaverse, a person’s secondary gender is what determines if they can impregnate someone or get pregnant. Their biological sex does not play a role. The standard secondary genders are Alpha, Beta, and Omega.
- According to lore, Enigmas are extremely rare. Usually, only one is born each generation, though this may vary according to the story. They’re often believed to be a myth because of how rare they are.
- Enigmas are not a traditional part of the Omegaverse, so you likely won’t encounter them when reading Omegaverse stories.

Research source} However, Enigmas’ pheromones are so strong that they can force even Alphas to submit. In some stories, Enigmas can even convert Alphas into Omegas. It’s almost impossible to resist an Enigma’s commands.
While Alphas tend to be aggressive and have quick tempers, that’s not the case with Enigmas. Instead, they appear very calm and self-assured. They know people will listen to them, so they don’t need to yell to get their point across. Their powerful aura is undeniable.^{[3]

In the Omegaverse, one’s secondary gender determines whether they can be impregnated rather than their biological sex. Traditionally, Alphas impregnate others and cannot be impregnated themselves.^{[4]

Enigmas can resist Omega pheromones. To standard Alphas, Omegas’ pheromones are irresistible when the Omega is going through a heat cycle, causing the Alpha to go into a rut cycle. Because Enigmas are so powerful, they do not react the same way. They can resist the pheromones and do not enter a rut.

Research source} In the Omegaverse, Enigmas are an ultra-rare secondary gender, and not much is understood about their biology. Their existence breaks the established rules of the Omegaverse (as they can impregnate Alphas, who cannot typically be impregnated), so they’re known as Enigmas.

Enigmas may have originated with the manga Kanraku Alpha Enigma. The term Omegaverse first came to exist in the early 2010s, but it only featured the standard A/B/O hierarchy.^{[6]

Research source} One of the first known examples of the Enigma was in Shinshi Nakai’s manga Kanraku Alpha Enigma. However, the archetype didn’t really take off, and it’s still pretty rare to find Enigmas in Omegaverse fanfiction or novels.

Alphas In standard Omegaverse lore, Alphas are the most dominant secondary gender. They’re known to be assertive, aggressive, and natural leaders. They’re extremely possessive of their mate and pack members, and they’re capable of impregnating all Omegas, regardless of gender.^{[8]

Betas In most Omegaverse stories, Betas function as regular humans. They’re not driven by mating instincts the way Alphas and Omegas are. Because of this, they often act as mediators and are more emotionally stable than other secondary genders.^{[9]
