  1. The NFPA fire hydrant color coding system helps firefighters tell at a glance how much water they have access to in a specific hydrant. Many, but not all, cities in the U.S. use this standard (found in NFPA 291) when painting or repainting the knob-like bonnet on top of their hydrants. Here's a breakdown of the standard bonnet colors, their classes, and how much water flow in gallons per minute (GPM) each one represents:[1]
    • Light blue (Class AA): >1500 gpm
    • Green (Class A): 1000-1499 gpm
    • Orange (Class B): 500-999 gpm
    • Red (Class C): <500 gpm

  2. NFPA 291 also calls for fire hydrant barrels to be painted certain colors to indicate whether they're for private or public use. According to the code, private fire hydrants should be painted bright red, and public hydrants should be painted chrome yellow. Yellow was chosen specifically because it's easy to see at night. So if a firefighting crew responds to a fire after sunset, they can easily spot the hydrants, no matter how dark it is.[2]
    • Note: Many cities use silver instead of chrome yellow for their public fire hydrants. This is acceptable because silver is reflective and shows up well in the dark.[3]

Non-potable water hasn't been treated and isn't safe to drink, but can still be used for firefighting.[4] An all-black fire hydrant is restricted, so firefighters aren't allowed to access it. If a fire hydrant has a black bonnet and/or nozzle caps, that means it's extremely low pressure, and firefighters probably want to avoid tapping into it.[5]
    • Other fire hydrant markings: A black bag over the top of a fire hydrant means it's temporarily out of order and can't be used.[6] And if a fire hydrant uses water pressure above or below 20 PSI, the pressure amount is usually marked in black on top of the hydrant.[7]

  1. When a fire is burning, firefighters must decide quickly how much water they need access to for putting out the blaze. The NFPA bonnet color code helps firefighters assess at a glance how much water they can access with that hydrant. From there, they can decide best whether to connect their hose to that hydrant or find one with more water.[8]
    • In general, the bigger the fire, the more gallons per minute should come out of the hoses.
    • Note: Firefighters might have to tap into multiple fire hydrants at once. It depends on the fire's size and how much water each hydrant provides.
  2. If firefighters are working at night, they need to be able to spot fire hydrants quickly, even if the street is dark. The NFPA recommends chrome yellow for public fire hydrant barrels because it's bright, reflective, and shows up well in low light.[9]
    • Can firefighters use private fire hydrants? Yes, firefighters can use private fire hydrants, which the NFPA standard requires to be painted red. They're useful when the source of the fire is on private property, and the nearest public hydrant is out of the fire hoses' reach.[10]

  1. When a fire is blazing somewhere in the city, the firefighters bring their own water with them on their fire truck. But if that water isn't enough, they connect their hoses to the fire hydrant nearest the fire. They do so by removing the nozzle caps from the sides of the hydrant and attaching their hoses to the outlets. Then they turn the stem nut on top of the hydrant to open the water valve, so the water can flow up from the water pipes in the ground, out of the hydrant, and through their hoses.[12]
    • Did you know? Fire hydrants typically come with 2-3 outlets: two outlets for standard firefighter hoses, and one large outlet for the pumper hose, which can spray a larger amount of water.
