Ignotus Peverell is Harry’s ancient relative and a Peverell brother. You might remember this name from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Ignotus and his brothers, Antioch and Cadmus, were the subject of the Tale of the Three Brothers. In the tale, the brothers outwit death and secure the three Deathly Hallows: the elder wand, the resurrection stone, and the invisibility cloak.^{[2]

James Potter is Harry’s father. James was quite the troublemaker during his time at Hogwarts, often engaging in shenanigans with his fellow Marauders (Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew). However, James eventually settled down and married Lily Evans. Much like Harry, James was a Gryffindor and an exceptional Quidditch player.

Lily Potter (née Evans) is Harry’s mother. She was Muggle-born and faced judgement from her sister, Petunia. Still, she attended Hogwarts, where she was sorted into Gryffindor. Sirius and James met at Hogwarts and were two of the four Marauders (along with Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew). They were best friends, and James asked Sirius to be Harry’s godfather. Sirius is framed for Lily and James’s murder and gets locked up in Azkaban until his escape in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It isn’t until after his escape that he and Harry are able to form a true connection.
While not a confirmed relative, Charlus Potter is on the Black family tree. Charlus married Dorea Black, who is in the third generation of the House of Black. Fans speculate about whether this is a true tie that would make the Potters and Blacks related. We all know J.K. Rowling doesn’t tend to sprinkle things like that in by accident, so who knows? Maybe Harry and his godfather have some shared DNA, after all!

Harry Potter’s Connection to Lord Voldemort

Harry and Voldemort actually share a common bloodline! Both wizards are descended from the Peverell brothers, an ancient wizarding lineage. While Harry descended from Ignotus, Voldemort descended from Cadmus (who possessed the resurrection stone) on his mother’s side. This means that Harry and Voldemort are very distantly related.
- J.K. Rowling said in a 2007 interview, “Nearly all wizarding families are related if you trace them back through the centuries.”^{[12]
