About the Big 3 Clans in Jujutsu Kaisen

  1. According to Han, these three clans are known for their substantial power and political influence.[1] They began to stand out for their jujutsu abilities over one thousand years ago during the Heian era. Since then, they’ve held strong political influence over the jujutsu world and Japan as a whole.[2]
    • The Heian era is commonly known as the golden age of jujutsu due to the number of talented sorcerers at the time. The Big 3 gaining notoriety then shows the sheer magnitude of their power.
    • The Big 3 are able to influence sorcerers’ roles and standings at Jujutsu High. They also help the Prime Minister of Japan determine the head of Jujutsu Headquarters through direct nominations.
    • The Big 3 clans keep each other in check through their strong cursed techniques and political power, though Satoru Gojo’s existence serves as a much higher deterrent than anything else.

Gojo Clan Members & Techniques

PDF download Download Article
  1. Although the Gojo clan has an extensive history as the descendants of Michizane Sugawara (one of the Three Great Vengeful Spirits of Japan), the only member shown on screen is Satoru Gojo. Satoru is also the most powerful sorcerer in the modern age of jujutsu, as he’s the first one with their coveted Six Eyes and Limitless techniques in 400 years.[3]
    • Because of Satoru’s power, the Gojo clan has strong leverage against the other Big 3 clans, as well as the jujutsu world at large.
    • The Gojo Clan is the most non-conformist and progressive among the Big 3 because it’s essentially a one-man army ruled entirely by Satoru Gojo. Han says one of the anime’s biggest themes is the idea of the old guard versus the new. There's a conformist ideology behind Jujutsu Society; if you stand out or go against the hierarchy, it isn’t looked kindly upon.[4]
    • Spoiler: In Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo (a spin-off sequel), Yuta Okkotsu becomes the head of the Gojo clan since he’s also a descendant of Michizane Sugawara.
      • Yuta’s son, Iori Okkotsu, and grandchildren, Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu, are also members of the clan by extension.
  2. The Six Eyes and Limitless techniques are responsible for producing the most powerful sorcerer in the modern age, Satoru Gojo. These techniques allow users to visualize cursed energy like a high-definition camera and manipulate space at will, giving the Gojo clan an edge that no other clan has.
    • Six Eyes: According to anime expert Dr. Applesauce, “Six Eyes manifest as bright blue eyes, and give the bearer extra sensory perception so they can see the flow of cursed energy in extreme detail.”[5]
    • Limitless: An innate technique in the Gojo clan that lets the user manipulate infinite space at will, according to Dr. Applesauce.[6]
      • This technique also makes it so no one is able to touch the user, as the aggressor gets caught in the infinite space between the two.
    • These two techniques are extremely powerful, but they can only be used alongside one another.
    • If someone is born with the Limitless technique without the Six Eyes, they won’t have the cursed energy perception needed to manipulate space.

Zenin Clan Members & Techniques

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to pop culture commentator Michael Udayakumar, the Zenin clan is an influential clan known for their strict value of power and prestige.[7] Han agrees, citing the clan’s rigid hierarchy and structure.[8] They pride themselves on being powerful sorcerers, so much so that they’ll ostracize and excommunicate non-sorcerers like Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro. Of all the members of the Zenin clan, the ones shown in the series are:[9]
    • Naobito Zenin: The 26th head of the clan, the first member with Projection Sorcery, and the father of Naoya Zenin.
    • Ogi Zenin: The father of Maki and Mai Zenin and the older brother of Naobito. Despite being the older brother, he was passed over as clan head due to his children’s seemingly low potential. He resents them both for this.
    • Naoya Zenin: The son of Naobito. He inherited the Projection Sorcery technique from his father, but was passed over as the next head of the Zenin clan.
      • Naoya also leads the Hei, a unit of the strongest sorcerers in the Zenin clan.
    • Toji Fushiguro: A former member of the Zenin clan who left after repeated oppression and abuse. Han says Toji was born without cursed energy, which caused him to be ostracized.[10] This is due to his Heavenly Restriction, which means he has zero cursed energy in exchange for superhuman strength, speed, and durability.
      • Although Toji was ostracized by his clan due to lacking a cursed technique, members believed he could wipe them out at any moment if he chose to do so.
    • Megumi Fushiguro: Toji Fushiguro’s son and the 27th head of the clan. Although he initially had nothing to do with the Zenin clan, he became the head after Naobito’s death since he inherited the Ten Shadows Technique.
    • Maki Zenin: Han says Maki was also ostracized because she was born without cursed energy.[11] She left the Zenin clan after repeated oppression due to her Heavenly Restriction. After becoming a jujutsu sorcerer on her own, she returned to annihilate the clan, says anime expert Krist Bozaia.[12]
    • Mai Zenin: The younger twin to Maki Zenin, Mai was cursed with low cursed energy due to her connection with her sister.
      • Although she initially resented Maki for her low cursed energy, she later sacrificed herself to boost Maki’s power and get revenge on the Zenin clan for how they treated them.
    • Jinichi Zenin: The older brother of Toji and a member of the Hei with a cursed technique that allows him to create giant, powerful fists from cursed energy.
    • Chojuro Zenin: An elder member of the Hei with a cursed technique that allows him to manipulate the earth.
    • Ranta Zenin: A kind-hearted member of the Hei with a cursed technique that allows him to freeze his target in place.
    • Nobuaki Zenin: The captain of the Kukuru Unit (a unit of male soldiers without cursed techniques).
  2. These two inherited techniques are the pride and joy of the Zenin clan, the Ten Shadows Technique especially.[13] The latter technique is so powerful that it led to the deaths of the former Gojo clan head and the Zenin clan head during a battle centuries before the events of the main story.
    • Projection Sorcery: An animation-based technique that breaks one second into 24 frames. If an opponent doesn’t match the caster’s 24 movements, they’re frozen in place for a second.
    • Ten Shadows Technique: A shadow-based technique that allows the user to summon ten powerful shadow shikigami (monsters) and command them, given they defeat them in a subjugation ritual first.
      • The most powerful of these shikigami, the Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga, has only been defeated and subjugated by Ryomen Sukuna.

Kamo Clan Members & Techniques

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Kamo clan is a prestigious clan who has held long ties with the jujutsu world’s upper brass. Despite their strong reputation, the clan has a permanent stain due to the actions of “Noritoshi Kamo” (a former member who was possessed by Kenjaku), who impregnated a human woman with a cursed spirit and produced the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings. Known members include:
    • Noritoshi Kamo: Noritoshi Kamo is the son of the former clan head and his mistress. Despite initially being ostracized by the clan, since he inherited the Blood Manipulation technique, he was later named the clan’s heir.
      • He was named after the Noritoshi who Kenjaku possessed because his mother wanted to spite the Kamo clan for how they treated her.
    • Kenjaku: While possessing the body of Suguru Geto, this 1,000+ year old sorcerer manipulated jujutsu higher-ups to seize control of the Kamo clan. He displaced Noritoshi and became the 25th head of the clan.
      • When he possessed the original Noritoshi Kamo, Kenjaku earned the reputation as the most evil sorcerer in history.
  2. Blood Manipulation is an inherited technique that allows the user to manipulate the blood in their bodies. They can transform their blood into projectile weapons, shields, or any construct of their choosing. They can also manipulate the temperature of the blood in their bodies to keep their organs in top shape, giving them an advantage on the battlefield.[14]
    • Although he’s not a member of the clan, the Cursed Womb: Death Painting, Choso, is also able to use Blood Manipulation. He’s also exceptionally talented with it, going as far as to teach Yuji Itadori how to use the technique!

Other Notable Clans in JJK

PDF download Download Article
  1. Distinguished by their family sigil of snake eyes and fangs, the Inumaki clan is known for their Cursed Speech technique. This technique forces any person who hears the commands of the user to obey them, granted the user has enough cursed energy. The only known member of the clan is Toge Inumaki, a semi-grade 1 sorcerer student at Tokyo Jujutsu High.[15]
    • Due to the dangerous and uncontrollable nature of their technique, the Inumaki clan is treated as outlaws. While they try to phase out their technique, they've abandoned or exiled members with strong abilities to prevent accidental tragedies.
  2. The Fujiwara clan was one of the most powerful clans in the Heian era, influencing the politics of sorcery at the time. They had a roster of the strongest sorcerers alive, and even erected elite sorcerer groups like the Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad and the Five Empty Generals. Although they were exceptionally strong, these groups were eventually wiped out by Ryomen Sukuna.
    • The only known member of the Fujiwara clan is Takako Uro, the leader of the Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad who was framed and executed for another Fujiwara clan member’s crimes.
      • Uro was only given a name so she could be framed. Prior to that incident, members of the Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad were nameless assassins.
  3. The Abe clan was another prominent sorcerer family during the Heian era. They erected the Desshi Pacification Squad, whose members consisted of Angel and the remaining members of the Sugawara Clan. This squad was sent to fight Sukuna, but after their defeat, Angel vowed to kill him no matter what.
    • This vow held even when Angel was reincarnated a thousand years after their death.
    • The only known member of the Abe clan is Angel.

Which Big 3 clan is the strongest in JJK?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Since Satoru Gojo was the strongest sorcerer of his time, the Gojo clan was the strongest clan by extension. This was up until Gojo’s battle with Ryomen Sukuna during the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, where he was ultimately defeated by the King of Curses and made to forcibly relinquish his title as the strongest.[16]
    • Since all three big families were destroyed or left in ruins by this point in the story, none could confidently claim the title as the strongest clan.
