The clan was once prominent, but many of its members were wiped out after their village, Uzushiogakure, was destroyed.[1] The remaining members settled in Konohagakure. The clan regained an “active” status 15 years after the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Ed Erskine is an anime expert and podcaster based in London, UK. Ed founded the Suuuper Anime Podcast in 2020. It’s the #1 anime podcast in the UK, and has been listened to in over 190 countries.

Grant Cunningham is an anime expert based in Greensboro, North Carolina. He's been creating content about gaming, anime, and cosplay since 2020.

  2. Anime expert Grant Cunningham says the Uchiha clan is “one of the major families” in Naruto.[2] They’re considered the strongest of the Four Noble Clans of Konohagakure. They helped found Konoha, but isolated themselves from the village, which ultimately led to their downfall when, according to Cunningham, Itachi Uchiha wiped out the entire clan, apart from his brother Sasuke.[3] Sasuke went on to restart the Uchiha line when he married and had a daughter.
    • Erskine agrees that Uchiha is a particularly strong clan. He points out that “they possess the Sharingan (amongst other techniques).”[4]
    • Notable powers: Natural battle prowess, Fire Release, the Sharingan (eyes that grant superhuman vision)
    • Notable members: Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha, Madara Uchiha, Obito Uchiha

  3. “While there are many powerful clans, the strongest clan in Naruto [is] the Ōtsutsuki clan,” says Erskine. “They essentially created the concept of chakra. They possess multiple strong techniques and abilities such as the Rinnegan and Byakugan to name a few.”[5] The Otsutsuki clan, which is a race of ancient, humanoid celestial beings, travel to different planets to drain life energy using God Trees, which use the energy to produce Chakra Fruit. Their goal is to attain godhood. They have white or grey skin, pupilless eyes, and horns.[6]
    • Notable powers: Immense chakra, interdimensional travel, space-time manipulation, flight, resurrection
    • Notable members: Shibai Otsutsuki, Kaguya Otsutsuki, Isshiki Otsutsuki
  4. The Hyuga clan is one of the Four Noble Clans of Konohagakure, and its members are actually descendants of the Otsutsuki clan. Every member born into the clan possesses the Byakugan, which enhances their vision and allows them to see through solid objects. They’re one of the most powerful clans in Konohagakure.[7]
    • Notable powers: Enhanced vision, telescopic sight, excellent chakra control, tenketsu detection, Gentle Fist (allows them to strike a target’s internal organs)
    • Notable members: Hinata Hyuga, Hiashi Hyuga, Hanabi Hyuga
  5. The Senju clan was one of the clans that founded Konohagakure, though they no longer exist when the plot of Naruto starts. Their philosophy of the Will of Fire continues to influence the village’s politics, however. Like the Hyuga, the Senju were descendants of the Otsutsuki and had powerful chakra.[8]
    • Erskine says that the Senju clan “have massive amounts of chakra, and also possess the rare elemental power of wood release jutsu.”[9]
    • Notable powers: Strong life force and chakra, ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu
    • Notable members: Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, Butsuma Senju, Tsunade, Toka Senju
  6. The Kazekage clan is a highly influential clan from Sunagakure, though their true surname is unknown. They’re instead named after the Kage title they inherit. The clan’s members are skilled at manipulating sand and controlling the wind element. The Kazekage title is sometimes believed to be cursed, as many members meet an untimely death.[10]

    • Notable powers: Genjutsu, reality manipulation, dual personalities (which give them better control over their genjutsu)
    • Notable members: Yakumo Kurama, Murakumo Kurama, Uroko Kurama, Unkai Kurama
  10. Though now extinct, the Kaguya clan was a powerful clan descended from Kaguya Otsutsuki. • Notable members: Kakashi Hatake, Sakumo Hatake
  12. The Aburame clan is one of the Four Noble Clans of Konohagakure and is best known for their mastery over insects. When a member is born, they’re offered up as a nest to different species of insects, and the insects will then live under their skin. The host is then able to use the insects as weapons. What is a clan in Naruto?

PDF download Download Article
  1. “A clan is a group of ninjas who share a common lineage, secret techniques, and genetic traits,” Erskine explains. “Many clans possess unique genetic abilities passed down through their DNA which other ninjas cannot copy or replicate.”[20] A shinobi’s clan is typically determined by who they’re blood-related to, though they often marry into other clans. Larger clans are composed of extended families, while smaller ones may consist of a single nuclear family.
    • Many clans were mercenary military forces before the First Shinobi World War.
    • The Senju and Uchiha clans were the first to settle and form a village. Other clans later followed their example and established the Five Great Shinobi Countries.
    • The Five Great Shinobi Countries are the Land of Fire (Konohagakure), Land of Wind (Sunagakure), Land of Lightning (Kumogakure), Land of Earth (Iwagakure), and Land of Water (Kirigakure).[21]
    • Naruto lives in the Hidden Leaf village in Konohagakure. The Four Noble Clans of Hidden Leaf are Uchiha, Hyuga, Aburame, and Akimichi.
