What is chakra in Naruto?

  1. According to Barnes, “In Naruto, there is a power system called chakra, which is essentially the life force of a person.”[1] It’s the magic system in Naruto that allows ninjas to use supernatural powers, like manipulating the elements. Chakra exists in everything and is formed when a user combines their physical energy and their spiritual energy.[2]
    • Chakra is typically invisible, though large amounts can manifest physically. This is rare, however, as the Eight Gates tenketsu limits the amount of chakra someone can release at a single time.

  2. The shinobi learn how to generate more chakra, and they release it outside their bodies to perform jutsu. Even the most basic jutsu requires chakra, and according to anime expert Grant Cunningham, most users control chakra using various hand seals.[3] Hand seals allow users to shape the energy into different Techniques. For example, some may be able to turn energy bursts into weapons, and others use their chakra to cast elements like fire or water.[4]
    • If someone uses up all their chakra, they will die. The maximum amount someone can use at a single time can increase through practice, but it’s mainly genetic.
    • Barnes adds, “Everybody has different amounts of chakra reserves, and that basically relates to how strong a character is.”[5]

  3. No two individuals have the exact same chakra. Each individual’s chakra has a unique chakra signature. These signatures are passed down genetically, so clans often have similarities in their chakras, such as certain nature affinities or how much chakra they can use at a time.[6]
    • Chakra signatures can be altered if a user absorbs DNA from different people.
    • Similar chakra signatures (like those among family) resonate when close to each other.
    • Each individual’s chakra also has a unique color.

Where does chakra come from?

  1. According to Madara Uchiha, the founder of Konohagakure and a reincarnation of Indra Otsutsuki, Hamura and Hagoromo Otsutsuki were born with chakra after their mother, Kaguya, ate their planet’s chakra fruit from the God Tree. Hagomoro then used ninshu to spread chakra to others, hoping to create peace by allowing people to understand each other without speaking.[7]
    • The people did not use chakra the way Hagomoro intended, instead using it to connect their spiritual and physical energies. They weaponized their inner chakra to create ninjutsu.

Chakra Control Explained

  1. The Shinobi learn to control the amount of chakra they use at a time so they don’t waste it. Using too much chakra at once would tire them out. Using too little will result in an ineffective Technique, which might have consequences in combat. Users have better control of their chakra when they stay calm and focused.[8]
    • Certain training methods, like Leaf Concentration, Tree Climbing, and Water Surface Walking, are common ways to improve chakra control.
    • The more a ninja practices their hand seals, the more easily they’ll be able to manipulate their chakra.
    • Those who are especially skilled at chakra control typically specialize in genjutsu or become medical-nin.
    • Chakra control can also enhance a ninja’s physical abilities, such as increasing their speed or strength.

What is Nature Transformation?

  1. These elements are Wind, Lightning, Earth, Water, and Fire. Everyone’s chakra has a natural affinity toward one or more of these elements, allowing users to use jutsu related to that element. Highly skilled ninjas can use multiple elements at once to create new elements.[9]
    • For example, Haku is skilled in both wind and water, allowing him to use Ice Release. Hashirama Senju is skilled in water and earth, resulting in Wood Release.

Types of Chakra

  1. Tailed Beasts, or Chakra Monsters, are living beings made of pure chakra. They’re 9 large masses that were created by the Sage of Six Paths using the chakra from Earth’s Ten-Tails. Each beast has one to nine tails and a red chakra color.[10]
  2. Senjutsu, or Sage Techniques, is a type of jutsu that uses natural energy. Sages blend natural energy with their chakra to create senjutsu chakra. Senjutsu chakra makes the user’s techniques more powerful and allows them to use techniques they otherwise couldn’t.[11]
  3. Absorption chakra is released from the mouth of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and takes the form of a dragon. When chakra touches the dragon, the dragon can kill humans instantly. The Phantom Dragons Nine Consuming Seals sealing technique uses 9 dragons to absorb Tailed Beast chakra or seal the beasts into the Demonic Statue.[12]
  4. Six Paths chakra is an extremely powerful form of chakra, though the series offers little information about what it is. It is believed to be connected to Yin-Yang Release, however. Here are some examples of how the power of Six Paths is used:[13]
    • Naruto and Madara use Six Paths Chakra to float.
    • Naruto applies the Six Paths Sage Chakra to his Truth-Seeking Balls to damage Madara’s shadows.
    • The Sage of Six Paths Power is believed to be the source of Naruto’s Truth-Seeking Balls and Sasuke’s Amenotejikara.
    • Kakashi Hatake used Six Paths Power to enhance his eye technique.
    • Hagoromo Otsutsuki gives Naruto and Sasuke the Six Paths Yin Power and Six Paths Yang Power to seal Madara.
  5. Hamura Otsutsuki’s chakra is very similar to Six Paths Chakra. It’s passed down through the Otsutsuki and Hyuga clans, and only people with the chakra can touch the Tenseigan.[14]
  6. The ninja monks of the Ninja Temples use the Gift of the Hermit Group, and it’s needed to open the Sealed Iron Wall that allows access to the Fire Temple. This chakra is also used in the Welcoming Approach: Thousand-Armed Murder technique.[15]
  7. Star Chakra is a chakra-enhancing meteorite that Hoshigakure shinobi use to manipulate their chakra. However, doing so can cause a lot of harm to their bodies. In its raw manifestation, this chakra resembles a peacock’s tail, which is why Hoshigakure’s method is called the Mysterious Peacock.[16]
  8. Negative chakra is created by negative emotions and is used by the Tailed Beasts, Children of Chakra, and spirits. Some powerful users use it to sense negative emotions. When Nue and Sumire give the chakra to others, they can control them.[17]
  9. Like Negative chakra, Dark chakra is formed from negative emotions. It feeds on negativity and requires strong chakra control, as disruption can cause a lot of physical harm to the user. Zero-Tails created this form of chakra.[18]
  10. Priestess chakra is used by Shion in Naruto Shippuden: The Movie. She uses it to form a light barrier and transform herself into an angelic form. This type of chakra can also be used to create a protective shield around other people, and it emits pink rays of light.[19]
  11. Ryūmyaku chakra grants users unlimited chakra reserves. It’s an ancient form of chakra that flows beneath the kingdom of Rōran. Only Rōran’s royalty can close or open the flow, but anyone can use it when it’s open.[20]

Characters with the Most Chakra

PDF download Download Article
  1. Kaguya Otsutsuki became known as the “Progenitor of Chakra” after gaining a large amount of chakra when she began the Ten-Tails jinchuriki. Her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, then became the first characters who were born with chakra and also possessed large amounts of chakra.[21]
  2. Barnes says Naruto ends up being the strongest character in the show because of how much chakra he has.[22] He has more chakra than other ninjas because he’s a member of the Uzumaki bloodline, and his reserves were boosted by the Nine-Tails, which were sealed inside him as a baby. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he also gained chakra from the other Tailed Beasts and received Six Paths chakra from Hagoromo Otsutsuki.[23]
  3. Madara was the biggest villain in Naruto before Black Zetsu betrayed him and brought Kaguya back. His massive chakra levels allowed him to defeat the Five Kage and almost eliminate a whole division of the Shinobi Alliance. His chakra reserves grew when he became the jinchurriki of the Ten-Tails.[24]
  4. Obito Uchiha started the Fourth Great Ninja War as he attempted to bring Rin back using the power of the Ten-Tails. He gained additional chakra after being crushed by a boulder and being implanted with Hashirama’s cells. He gained even more chakra after turning into the Ten-Tails jinchuriki.[25]
