In Minecraft, farming is the process of automatically producing various renewable resources. It’s a way of quickly gaining more food, blocks, ores, or experience without having to hunt, search, or mine for them. Farms can be manually controlled, which means the player will need to harvest the resources they produce. They can also be automatic or semi-automatic, which means there is some mechanical means of harvesting the resources. This wikiHow article teaches various farming ideas you can try in Minecraft.

- Building the farm:
  - On the bottom layer of your farm, you’ll need a chest in the ground with a hopper leading into it. This should go in the corner near the entrance.
  - For each layer, you’ll need about 24 blocks of dirt for planting crops, surrounded by a wall. You’ll need a light source (i.e., torches, windows, glowstone) for each layer so the crops can grow. You’ll also need a single block of water in the dirt layer, above the hopper, with no blocks under it.
  - You can hold a single block of water suspended above ground using a fence post or by placing a sign on a wall just below it.
  - Each layer will also need a dispenser with a bucket of water inside on the opposite side of the water blocks on the floor.
  - You’ll also need a ladder leading to each level.
  - On the bottom floor, you’ll need a button with a trail of redstone dust leading to the dispenser there.
  - You can use redstone torches to carry the signal to all the dispensers on all the higher floors.
- How it works: The player tills the dirt and plants crops on all floors. When the crops are ready for harvest, the player can press a button on the bottom floor to release water from the dispensers. The water will push all the crops to the blocks of water above the hopper. The crops will fall through the block of water in the dirt and land in the hopper, where they can be collected in the chest.

An automatic farm that uses iron golems to farm iron. Iron is another resource that is critical in Minecraft. It is used to build strong weapons, tools, and armor. However, mining iron can be time-consuming and hazardous. The iron golem iron farm allows you to produce and farm iron from relative safety:
- Building the farm:
  - For this one, you’re going to want to build a staircase. The base of the farm should be 12 blocks above the floor.
  - You’ll need to build three glass rooms for villagers. Each room should have a bed, a torch, and space for them to stand.
  - You can lure them into the rooms using workstations. Place a trail for workstations and break each workstation until the villager is in their room.
  - You can also build an optional glass chamber for a zombie. The chamber should have water for him to stand in to keep him from burning during the day. Place a name tag on the zombie to keep it from spawning.
  - Build an area for iron golems above the villagers' chambers. It should have a couple of levels that water can cascade down.
  - At the bottom of the area for iron golems, there should be an exit with signs placed perpendicular to the edge to keep the water from flowing over the edge.
  - Below the exit, there should be a chamber with a layer of lava on top of rows of signs (to keep the lava from falling). Below the lava are hoppers connected to a chest.
- How it works: The villagers will spawn an iron golem if none is nearby, especially if they see a zombie. An iron golem will spawn in the area on top, where the water will push it to the exit, where it will fall into the lava. Iron ingots will fall into the hoppers below, where they can be collected in the chest.

Chicken Farm

- Building the farm:
  - For this farm, you’ll need to build a chamber full of chickens on top of a hopper attached to a dispenser.
  - In front of the dispenser, you’ll need to either build a block of lava hovering on top of a slab (Bedrock Edition) or a fence post next to a cauldron of lava (Java Edition).
  - Below the slab or fence post, a hopper is attached to a chest.
- How it works: The chickens in the chamber above lay eggs, which fall into the hopper. The hopper dispenses chicks below the lava or above the fence post. When they mature, they will be cooked by the lava. The cooked chicken falls into the hopper below and is collected in the chest.

- Building the farm:
  - For this farm, you’ll need to build a chest with a hopper attached to it at the bottom.
  - Above the hopper is a walled-in chamber 1 block wide.
  - You’ll need to place a dispenser with a lava bucket inside, facing the bottom of the chamber.
  - Place an observer with a button next to the dispenser.
  - Continue building the chamber up.
  - Place a sign on the wall above the dispenser on the bottom.

- Building the farm:
  - Build a 9x9-block area of tilled farm soil, surrounded by a wall.
  - Place a hole with water in the center.
  - Build a passageway with three beds just outside the area with the tilled soil. Make sure the beds and the passageway are walled off as well.
  - Place a trap door in front of the beds that drops down to a water trench that carries the villager underground away from the tilled soil.
  - Place a sign on the wall so that you can place a bucket of water one block above where the water trench ends. This will lift the villagers up above ground.
  - Build a separate, enclosed above-ground area where the villagers gather. If you break the walls surrounding the elevated water source, the water will flow outward, pushing the villagers towards a corner where they can be collected.
- How it works. Lure a couple of villagers to the area with the tilled soil. Make sure the area has plenty of lights to prevent hostile mobs from spawning. The villagers will breed. The baby villager will walk towards the beds, where it will fall into the trap door. The water below will carry it down a corridor. It will wait at the end of the corridor until it is an adult. At that point, it will float up the elevated water and into a separate chamber where it will be pushed into the corner. If you want, you can build a rail system to carry the villagers where you want them.

  - Start by building an 11x11 wall. Then place 16 sand blocks inside the wall with a gap on each side.
  - Place fence posts above each gap 3 blocks high (you’ll need to stack the fence posts and then remove the bottom ones).
  - Dig a hole in the center of the farm with a hopper connected to a chest at the bottom.
  - Dig a passageway under the farm to access the chest.
  - Pour a bucket of water into each of the four corners of the area where the cacti are.
  - Plant a cactus on each of the sand blocks.
  - If you want more cacti, you can stack more levels on top of the farm. Just leave a hole in the center.
- How it works: When the cacti grow to a certain height, the fence posts will break the cacti. They will fall to the ground, where the water will carry them to the hole in the center with the hopper and chest. You can collect the cacti from the chest.
