Expert Advice for Picking a Baby Name

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Pay attention to the way different names make you feel. “Names carry layers of meaning from culture, media, family, and past experiences,” explains Dr. Wilson. To help untangle all those associations when you’re considering a name, Dr. Wilson recommends asking yourself how the name makes you feel, what it brings up for you, and whether it supports the image you want for your child.[28] In other words, does the name spark joy and happiness when you hear it spoken aloud or read it on paper? If so, this is a good sign!
  2. 2
Remember you’re not just naming a baby—you’re naming a future adult. According to Dr. Wilson, “Names shape how a child is introduced to the world. While personality matters most, a name can subtly influence confidence, self-image, and even how others respond to them.” With this in mind, Dr. Wilson says, “It is important for parents to consider the way in which others will respond to a name, particularly if it has certain associations.”[29]
    • Baby name consultant Maddy Ferguson agrees. “It's not just a baby that you're naming,” she says. “That's somebody that is going to be a grandma. That's somebody's parent someday. That's somebody that's going to be in the corporate world.”[30]
  3. 3
Consider waiting to name your baby until they arrive. If you’ve already come across the perfect name and you just know it’s right for your little one, that’s totally fine! On the flip side, if you’ve been having trouble deciding between a few options or even finding options you feel good about to begin with, you may want to wait until your baby arrives to see what type of energy they have. “I really think there is a huge value in meeting the person first even if it's a wordless meeting, even if this child can't communicate beyond just being in the world,” explains name change expert Novalee Wilder.[31]
