Do you have a Pages document you need to open? The easiest way to open a .pages file on Windows or in Linux is to upload the file to the web-based version of Pages, which is free with iCloud, or convert it to a Word document in an online Pages-to-Word converter. You can also change the extension to .ZIP and extract it, or, if you have a Mac, double-click the file to open it in the Pages application. Read on to learn the best ways to open a .pages file on a PC or Mac.

Opening Pages Files in Windows

If you don't have an Apple account, create one for free at account.apple.com. Then, log in to iCloud.com and click "Pages" to open the web version of Pages. Click the cloud icon with an up-arrow to upload the file, then double-click it to open it. You can also convert .pages files in web converters or in Pages for Mac.

Using iCloud on the Web

Go to icloud.com and click Sign In. The easiest way to open a .pages file on a Windows PC, in Linux, or on a Chromebook is to use the browser-based version of Pages in iCloud. You will need an Apple account to do this, but they're free to create, and you can even set up your account on a Windows PC.^{[1]

Sign in with your Apple account. Follow the on-screen prompts to log in with your Apple (iCloud) account. If you don't have an account, go to account.apple.com in a web browser and click Create Your Apple Account at the top-right corner. From there, just fill out the form to set up your account.^{[2]

- If desired, you can click Sign in with Passkey if you have a device with iOS 17 or newer.
- If you have an Apple product, such as a Mac or iPhone, connected to your Apple account, you'll be prompted to complete your sign-in using 2-factor authentication. Follow the on-screen instructions to do so.^{[3]

Click the Pages app. It's the gray icon with an orange pencil drawing a line. This opens the web-based version of Pages.^{[4]

- Now, if the Pages file you want to view or edit was attached to an email message, you will need to download it before you can open it in Pages on the web. If you're using Gmail, for example, open the message and click the arrow on the attachment to download it.
It's at the top-center part of Pages. You'll be prompted to select a file.
If you downloaded it from an email message, it'll probably be in your Downloads folder. The filename should end with .pages. This will upload the file.^{[5]

- Changes you make to the file are automatically saved as you work.

Edit or convert the file. If you want to make changes to the Pages file, you can use the online Pages app to do so. Alternatively, you can download it in the Word DOCX, PDF, or EPUB format.
- To download the file, click ••• at the top-right corner of the document, then select Download a Copy… From there, select Pages, PDF, Word, or the EPUB format to save the file to your computer.

Go to a Pages to Word converter on the web. If you don't have Pages and want to be able to open a .pages file in Microsoft Word or Google Docs, you can use an online converter to convert the .pages file to the Word .DOCX format. These converters are usually free and easy to use. Some safe options:
Most converters let you drag and drop the .pages file into a box to start the upload, or click Choose File or Select File to select it from your computer.
This will convert the .pages file to the Word .DOCX format.

Download the converted file. Once the conversion is complete, you'll either be prompted to click a link to download the file, or the download will start immediately.
- Once downloaded, you can open the document in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Using Pages for macOS

Double-click the Pages file on your Mac to open it in Pages. Pages is a free application that comes pre-installed on macOS. If you need to open a .pages file on your Mac, all you'll need to do is double-click the file.^{[7]

Research source} Unless you removed the app, double-clicking any file that ends with the ".pages" file extension should automatically display the file in Pages.
- If the file opens in a different app, right-click or Ctrl-click the file name, select Open With, and then choose Pages.
- If you want to use Pages to convert the file to a Word document, you can do so by clicking the Share

If you don't have Pages installed, you can reinstall it from the App Store. The App Store icon looks like a white "A" in a blue circle. You can find it in your Applications folder or on the Dock.
Enter your keyword into the Search box, and hit Return on your keyboard. This will list all the matching results on a new page.^{[9]

Click the cloud icon next to the Pages app to download it. If you've deleted the app, you'll see a cloud icon next to it, which allows you to quickly download it again.^{[10]

- You may be prompted to confirm your action in a pop-up window here. In this case, sign in with your Apple account name and password to confirm.
Now that you have Pages installed, this will open it for viewing and editing in the Pages app.

Converting to a Zip File on Windows

Locate the Pages file. If you're trying to open a .pages file in Windows, another trick is to change the file to a ZIP file, then unzip the file. If you downloaded the file, it'll usually be in your Downloads folder.
- This will only show the first page of the document, and it'll be an image (JPG), not a PDF. So, this is really only useful if you want to see a preview or if the document is only one page long.
The file name should be [name].zip.
This will bypass the warning that the file may become unstable after changing the extension.
You should see a few folders and files inside.
This extracts the files to a new folder and opens it instantly.
If the new folder didn't open on its own, double-click the new folder in the same folder as the ZIP file to open it now. You'll see some folders and files inside.
This will open the first page of the Pages file as a JPG image.
