Palmistry expert Miriam Weber explains that the major lines on the hand can tell everything about a person’s life, especially important life events and overall character disposition. In particular, you’ll want to take a look at these six major palmistry lines and interpret their length, shape, and depth:

• Heart: Reveals emotional balance and potential traumas, as well as one’s attitudes, experiences, and behaviors in romantic relationships.
• Head: Reveals the way one thinks, as well as their curiosity, intellectualism, learning style, and communication style.
• Life: Reveals physical health, holistic well-being, major life changes, and the overall stability (or instability) of one’s life. This does not correlate to length of life.
• Fate: Reveals how deeply one is affected by external factors, as well as one’s purpose, destiny, career path, and potential success. Not everyone has this palm line.
• Health: Reveals one’s potential physical, emotional, and mental health. Not everyone has this palm line.
• Sun: Reveals creative ability, success, recognition, and the mundanity (or, conversely, the infamy) that one’s life will lead to.

   Heart The heart line primarily indicates emotions, specifically the balance of emotions or how emotionally complex somebody is. It can also indicate, depending on its shape and markings, if somebody is going to have a lot of emotional traumas or heartbreaks. Palmistry expert Kalem Turner adds that “the heart line is very important in romance readings. It reveals a person’s experience, good or bad, but also their attitude toward relationships and their personality when it comes to love.” Some believe that it’s also associated with physical heart health.

   • Where to find your heart line? The heart line starts at the base of your little finger and extends up toward your index finger. It sits above the head line.
   • Here are some ways to interpret the heart line:
     • Long = Many romantic commitments.
     • Wavy = Many relationships without much commitment.
     • Long and curvy = Emotionally expressive and open.
     • Straight and parallel to head line = Emotionally intelligent and pragmatic.
     • Upward-sloping = High emotional sensitivity.
     • Deep = Devoted heart.
     • Faint = Fickle heart.
     • Beginning below the index finger = Contentment in love life.

   Head “Your head line represents the way you think,” explains Turner. This may include personality traits like intelligence, intellectualism, and curiosity. It can also reveal things about how someone learns and how they communicate, or how they will grow in those areas over the course of their life.

   • Where to find your head line? The head line is in the center of the palm, and it stretches in a horizontal line between the thumb and index finger. It’s usually below the heart line and above the life line.
   • Here are some ways to interpret the head line:
     • Short = Values physical achievements over mental ones.
     • Straight = Realistic thinker.
     • Wavy = Short attention span.
     • Deep and long = Clear and focused thinking.
     • Faint = Difficulty focusing or poor memory.

   Life “Your life line points to how you’ve been taking care of yourself,” explains spiritual director Jennifer McVey, Cht. “Or, more pointedly, if you haven’t been taking care of yourself.” Overall, the life line may indicate your physical health, overall well-being, and whether or not you’ll have major shifts and changes in your life. It can also reveal your stamina and vitality. Contrary to popular belief, it is not believed to correlate with the length of your life or when you will die. So, with that in mind, a short life line does not mean a short life, but rather a more adventurous, risk-seeking, or anxiety-driven one.

   • Where to find your life line? The life line starts at the base of your thumb and travels down your palm in an arc. It varies in length, but the longest life lines may extend all the way down to the wrist.
   • Here are some ways to interpret the life line:
     • Curvy = Very energetic.
     • Long and deep = Rich in vitality, health, resilience, and dynamic life experiences.
     • Short and shallow = Easily tired out and manipulated by others.
     • Broken = Upcoming changes or a need for caution in life.
     • Forked upwards = Optimistic attitude toward life.
     • Forked downwards = Pessimistic attitude toward life.
     • Semicircle shape = Fearless and enthusiastic.

   Fate The fate line is sometimes known as the career line, as it concerns the direction of one’s professional life or overall direction in life. This also includes how successful one feels in their life, even if they don’t work. Turner affirms that the fate line is “most important for career, because it shows how much security you have. It can tie into finances, as well as the themes you’d be happy with in terms of your purpose, work, or vocation.” Some also interpret it as a way to see how deeply one’s life path is affected by circumstances outside their control, such as fate or destiny.

   • Where to find your fate line? The fate line is a vertical line that “runs up the middle of the hand, from the base of the wrist toward your middle finger,” says Turner. “Not everyone has it, but most people do.”
   • Here are some ways to interpret the fate line:
     • Deep = Strong sense of purpose, says Turner.
     • Deep and unbroken = Solid direction in life.
     • Deep and straight = Productivity and an illuminated life path, according to Weber.

   Health The health line primarily concerns one’s physical health. This may include physical strength and the health of one’s digestive system, liver function, and general nervous system. While similar to the life line, the health line has more to do with present, immediate physical health, while the life line foretells more of overall longevity in the course of one’s entire life.

   • Where to find your health line? The health line starts under the pinky finger and runs toward the wrist or the base of the thumb. It’s typically a vertical or diagonal line, and it runs between the life line and the pinky edge of the palm. Not everyone has this line.

   Simian Line The Simian Line is a horizontal line that runs all the way across the center of the palm. This line appears when the head and the heart lines have merged into one. If someone has this line, it’s said to reveal the close linkage between their head and their heart. Often, this manifests as impulsive or even aggressive behavior, but it can also lead to a free-spirited, unconventional personality that marches to the beat of its own drum.

   Mount of Mars There are actually two mounts of Mars: Outer Mars and Inner Mars. Outer Mars is located on the edge of the palm, between the Mount of Mercury and the Mount of Luna. If the two Mounts of Mars are prominent, it indicates a courageous spirit, a strong will, and a quick temper. If they’re very prominent, it suggests an intense or overbearing personality.    Some palm readers analyze the fingers for extra information. While this technique isn’t as common as reading the hand shapes, the mounts, and (of course) the lines of the hand, it can still contribute to the overall reading and any derived predictions. Usually, palm readers will interpret the finger length and shape and tie their meaning to a person’s character and life path. In general, longer fingers suggest calm, sensitivity, and a dislike of being rushed or harried. Short fingers, conversely, point to a fast-paced and hurried life. However, there are more specific ways to interpret each finger, as seen below:

   • Thumb: A long thumb suggests leadership; a short thumb suggests passivity. A flexible thumb suggests adaptability; an inflexible thumb suggests rigidity.
   • Index Finger: A long index finger suggests ambition; a short index finger suggests humility.
   • Middle Finger: A long middle finger suggests a serious, dutiful nature; a short middle finger suggests a free-spirited, impractical nature.
   • Ring Finger: A long ring finger suggests an artistic talent and mentality; a short ring finger suggests a logical or pragmatic mentality.
   • Pinky Finger: A long pinky finger suggests advanced business skills; a short pinky finger suggests challenges in business or with self-expression.
   • Knuckles: Smooth knuckles suggest a carefree attitude, and a willingness to go with the flow; knotty or bony knuckles suggest a thoughtful, analytical nature.
   • Flexibility: In general, flexible fingers suggest an open-minded attitude in life, while stiff fingers suggest a rigid or stubborn worldview.

How to Do a Palm Reading

   Choose which hand you want to read (or read first). It’s common practice to read the dominant hand during palm reading, as this is the hand you use the most, so it may reveal more about your life. However, other palmists argue that you need to consider both hands for a complete picture. As McVey explains, your dominant hand is thought to reveal your life in the present moment, your future, “what you’re doing, and how you’re still here” and growing. Your non-dominant hand, conversely, may reveal more about your past and “what you were born with.”

   • Alternatively, some practitioners read different hands based on gender. For men, they claim that the left hand represents what they’re born with and the right represents what they’ve accumulated throughout their life. The opposite is true for females, allegedly.
   • Ultimately, however, if you’re a beginner palm reader, you’ll likely want to start out with just one hand. In this case, it’s most recommended to use your dominant hand (or the dominant hand of the person whose palm you’re reading).

   Identify the major lines, hand shapes, mounts, and fingers. Start by locating all of the major lines on the hand, and take note of their shape, length, and depth. Identify any rare lines, if there are any, then continue to find and analyze the shapes of the mounts, fingers, and the overall hand. If you need to, use a magnifying glass to carefully inspect the palm, and/or take notes on your findings with a pen and a piece of paper.

   Put together all the information you have for a cohesive reading. For a proper palm reading, you can’t “just look at one line in the hand and not cross-reference it with the rest,” explains Turner. “It’s so important with palmistry not to read one line or sign on its own. Having said that, reading the whole hand in conjunction takes experience,” time, and practice. In the meantime, one technique to try is to “focus on what you’re drawn to first. So, for example, if you see a big, crooked middle finger, focus on that, because that’s not typical. You have to really look for what sticks out to you more than anything else, because that’s what makes a person unique and what makes their circumstances unique.”

   • Also, if you see something on your own palm or a loved one’s palm that seems negative or scary, don’t worry too much!
   • As Weber explains, “the hand changes over time as we change over time. As our personalities evolve, as our faces change, etc. Everything about our bodies reflects our internal emotional state, but especially our hands.”
   • Hands can also change as a result of lifestyle factors (e.g., working with your hands), health conditions (e.g., arthritis), and more.
   • Overall, it’s best to focus on the positive parts of any palm reading. And, if you really want to change a prediction that you’ve found in your palm lines, just focus on that as a primary goal in your life!

Turner actually discourages people from trying to read their own hands because of many experiences where people will say that they have a certain line or feature, and then they end up being totally wrong. This practice usually focuses on the creases (or lines) in the palm, the fleshy areas on the palm (also called “mounts”), and the overall shape of the hand and its fingers. 1. Palmistry traces back to ancient India, but it’s been used in many places and eras. The earliest known practitioners of palmistry lived thousands of years ago in ancient India, Sumer, Babylonia, Persia, and China. In these civilizations, it was thought to originate from Samudrika Shastra, which is the Vedic science of physiognomy and body divination. It eventually spread to the Mediterranean and ancient Greece, where it was allegedly popular with Aristotle and Alexander the Great.

   • During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period, however, the practice of palmistry fell out of favor due to religious suppression. Many Christian authorities viewed it as an occult practice, while rulers like King Henry VIII outlawed it outright.
   • Nevertheless, the art of palmistry endured, and European scholars in the 16th and 17th centuries worked to revive the practice and repopularize it as a valid medical science.
   • Eventually, in the 1800s, palm reading became a huge trend, with celebrity practitioners like Louis Hamon and William Benham bringing palmistry to upper-class citizens.
   • The appreciation of and fascination with palm reading has endured to this day, although it’s still viewed as an occult or folkloric practice, without any scientific validity or evidence.

   Is palmistry 100% accurate? No, palmistry is not believed to be 100% accurate. In fact, it’s classified as a pseudoscience, and there’s no scientific evidence to back up the idea that the features on your hand can predict your life path or personality.

   Which palm line predicts love and marriage? While the heart line can certainly help to predict love and marriage, there is an actual marriage line that can be even more telling. Weber says that “the marriage lines are horizontal crossbars that run underneath the pink finger on the edge of the hand about the heart line.
