You’ve probably seen videos online of dogs appearing and acting strangely, but sometimes they just seem too... human. Some believe these dogs are actually skinwalkers in disguise. We interviewed an urban legends expert to explain what a skinwalker dog is, what they look like, how to figure out if you have a skinwalker dog, and more!

A skinwalker dog is a malevolent shapeshifter that disguises itself as a dog. Skinwalker dogs are part folklore and part modern urban legend. They’re supposedly shapeshifting entities that mimic dogs but are always a bit “off.” Stories say skinwalker dogs may have glowing eyes, make human sounds instead of barking, move strangely, and lack dog instincts, like sniffing around.

See if your dog is suddenly behaving abnormally. Many people online claim that if your dog exhibits behavior that’s not normal for them, a skinwalker could have possessed them or taken their place. Common signals people point out are avoiding eye contact or moving in human-like ways, such as standing or sitting upright.

Others stare back at their owner straight in the eyes as if acknowledging the question. If you notice any of these reactions, it might be a sign your dog is actually a skinwalker in disguise.

There’s no evidence that skinwalker dogs are real. Some dog traits are mistaken for skinwalker behavior. For example, some dogs display a “submissive grin,” which is a friendly gesture toward their owner or other people. However, it can be misinterpreted as aggressive or unsettling by the way it exposes their teeth.^{[5]

The Navajo call these figures “yee naaldlooshii,” which translates to “with it, he goes on all fours.” They’re believed to be malicious and have supernatural powers with the intent to harm humans.
