Grease strike errors: Maria Tallchief and Edith Kanana'ole The funniest 2023 quarter error is definitely the grease strike errors on the Edith Kanana'ole and Maria Tallchief coins. In a grease strike error, a small section of the die fills up with grease or other debris. The buildup prevents that part of the die from transferring its design to the coin. This is exactly what happened on the obverse side of Tallchief and Kanana'ole's quarters. So instead of "IN GOD WE TRUST," the coin reads, "IN COD WE TRUST."^{[5]
