Trying to change your username in Minecraft? Doing so is easy! If you're playing the Java version of the game on your computer, you can change your username on the official Minecraft website. For Bedrock, which uses the Xbox/Microsoft account system, you'll need to change your Gamertag on the Xbox website. Here's how to change your Minecraft username on Bedrock or Java using your computer, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile device.

How to Change Your Minecraft Name

To change your Minecraft username on Bedrock, log in to the Xbox website and select your profile. Click the pencil icon to edit it. On Java Edition, log in to minecraft.net and select Change Profile Name under Minecraft.

- On Minecraft: Java Edition, your username is your Java profile name rather than your gamertag. However, it's possible they can be set to the same name.
- There are a couple of time limitations for usernames: You can only change your username once every 30 days. And, you can't change your username if your account was made in the last 30 days.
- Changing your in-game username for Java does not change your Minecraft website profile name.
This option appears in the left menu of your profile page, under your account name.

Type a new username under "Java Profile Name". Note that there are a few requirements for usernames:
- It needs to have 3 to 16 characters.
- You can't use spaces between the characters.
- You can use uppercase and lowercase A through Z, 0 through 9, and underscores (_).
- The username can't already be in use by another player.

If the name is not available, you'll need to edit it and check again.

- If desired, you can check the box to display your previous ID next to your new ID for 30 days. This is helpful if you have friends who may not know you from your new ID.
This will set your new online ID. You'll be logged out of all devices, so be sure to sign in again.

I have changed my name, and now when I try to log into any server it gives me an error message. How do I fix it?

Close the game, go to the launcher (the grass block app), click Switch User, log out and log back in again. You should be able to join servers now!

They actually tell you here in the article, "In an effort to keep users from changing their names constantly, Mojang enforces a mandatory 30 day waiting period between name changes. This means that once you change your name, you'll have to wait at least 30 days before you can do it again."

If you change your gamertag, your Minecraft PE and/or console edition(s) will reflect the change. Keep in mind that you can only change your gamertag a handful of times, and you may have to pay to do so.
