Trying to change your username in Minecraft? Doing so is easy! If you're playing the Java version of the game on your computer, you can change your username on the official Minecraft website. For Bedrock, which uses the Xbox/Microsoft account system, you'll need to change your Gamertag on the Xbox website. Here's how to change your Minecraft username on Bedrock or Java using your computer, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile device.
How to Change Your Minecraft Name
To change your Minecraft username on Bedrock, log in to the Xbox website and select your profile. Click the pencil icon to edit it. On Java Edition, log in to minecraft.net and select Change Profile Name under Minecraft.
Steps
-
Go to xbox.com and log in to your Microsoft account. This is the official website for changing your Xbox username. If you're playing the Bedrock version of the game, your in-game username is your Xbox gamertag. Even the most seasoned gamer occasionally needs to change their Gamertag![1]
- If you play Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and signed in using your Microsoft account, you'll need to change your Xbox gamertag to change your Minecraft username.
- You can also change your Minecraft username on your Xbox console.
- If you did not sign into Minecraft with your Microsoft account, you'll need to change your Nintendo Switch nickname or change your PlayStation profile name instead.
-
Click your profile icon and select Xbox profile. The icon is in the top-right corner. You'll be redirected to your profile page.Advertisement
-
Click the pencil icon next to your current gametag. This is at the top of the page.
-
Type in a new gamertag into the field. Your gamertag can be between 1 and 12 characters (including spaces). It can't begin with a number.[2]
- Take your time and try different wordings to get a good Xbox Gamertag.
- If you need help, you can click Randomize for a generated username.
-
Click Next. If you see a message saying the Gamertag is taken, you'll need to modify it until it's accepted.[3]
-
Click CHANGE GAMERTAG. This will confirm the Gamertag change.[4]
-
Go to minecraft.net/en-us/login and log in. This is the official Minecraft website. If you're playing the Java version of the game, you'll be able to change your username on this site.[5]
- On Minecraft: Java Edition, your username is your Java profile name rather than your gamertag. However, it's possible they can be set to the same name.
- There are a couple of time limitations for usernames: You can only change your username once every 30 days. And, you can't change your username if your account was made in the last 30 days.
- Changing your in-game username for Java does not change your Minecraft website profile name.
-
Click My Games. This option appears in the left menu of your profile page, under your account name.
-
Click Change Profile Name under Minecraft: Java Edition. This will open a new page for changing your in-game username.[6]
-
Type a new username under "Java Profile Name". Note that there are a few requirements for usernames:
- It needs to have 3 to 16 characters.
- You can't use spaces between the characters.
- You can use uppercase and lowercase A through Z, 0 through 9, and underscores (_).
- The username can't already be in use by another player.
-
Click Change Your Profile Name. This will confirm your username change. Now you're ready to get back to making cool houses and finding the End Portal.[7]
- If you want to change your Java profile name again, you'll need to wait 30 days.
-
On your controller, press the Xbox button. This will open the menu.
- Use this method if you want to change your gamertag using your Xbox console rather than a web browser.[8]
-
Select Profile & system. You'll see this in the guide.

- If you play Minecraft on a Nintendo Switch, you'll need to change your Nintendo account nickname.[9]
-

-
Select Edit. This will be next to your current online ID.
-
Enter a new ID and select Check Availability. If the ID you entered isn't available, you'll need to edit it and try again.
-
Select Continue. This will take you to the next page.
- If desired, you can check the box to display your previous ID next to your new ID for 30 days. This is helpful if you have friends who may not know you from your new ID.
