To play any version of Minecraft, you'll need to have a Microsoft account. If you don't have one already, don't worry–it's easy and free to create! You'll just need an email address to start playing Minecraft on your computer, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile device. Here's how to create a Minecraft account for Java or Bedrock edition.

Making a Minecraft Account

To play Minecraft, you'll need a Microsoft account. Go to www.minecraft.net/en-us/login and select SIGN UP. Enter your birthday, country, email address, and verify it. Complete the remaining fields, select your gamer tag, and then select Save & continue.

   Go to www.minecraft.net in a web browser. This takes you to the Minecraft website.

   • If you already have a Microsoft account (this includes Xbox Live accounts), you don't have to create a new one. Just open Minecraft, choose the option to sign in with your Microsoft account, and log in.
   • If you have Minecraft Java Edition, you can play with others who are also using Java Edition. If you have Minecraft Bedrock Edition (which is the version available on consoles, smartphones, tablets, and "Minecraft for Windows 10") and use a Minecraft/Microsoft account, you can play against other people using Bedrock Edition on any platform (e.g., Android and Nintendo Switch players can play together).

   Click Account at the top-right corner and select SIGN IN. The login screen will appear.

   Click SIGN UP if you don't have a Microsoft account. Now that Minecraft is moving away from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts, creating a Microsoft account is how you will sign up for Minecraft.

   Enter your date of birth and country, then click Next. Use the drop-down menu to select your information.

   Enter your email address and click Next. If you don't have an email address, you'll need to create one.

   Verify your email address. You'll receive a 6-digit code; enter it now to verify.

   Enter your first and last name, and then click Next. If you don't want to receive Microsoft promotional emails, uncheck the box at the bottom.

   Complete the human verification. These tests will vary, though it typically involves following a set of directions on the screen.

   Create a password and click Next. This is the password you will use with your email address or phone number to sign in.

    Create an Xbox Gamertag and avatar. A Gamertag is the name that represents you in the Xbox online community. You can click one of the suggested names, randomize for more choices, or create a cool Gamertag yourself. Your avatar is the picture that appears next to your Gamertag online.

    • Your Gamertag cannot contain any offensive words.
    • Try not to use anything too personal in your Gamertag, such as your full name or address. Being more anonymous can help you stay safe online.

    Click Save & continue. You now have a Minecraft account and are logged in to Minecraft.net. Now that you have a Microsoft account, you can easily use it to sign in to Minecraft on any platform.

    • If you are playing Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch, you will also need an active subscription to your console's online service.

   Windows, Mac, and Linux Open the Minecraft launcher and select the Microsoft Login button. Enter your Microsoft account login information, and then select Sign in.

   Xbox If your Minecraft account is different from your Xbox account, you'll need to sign into the account you want to play with. Close Minecraft fully. Press the Xbox button, select Profile & System > Add or Switch > select your profile. Press the Xbox button again, select Profile & System > Sign out > select your account. Log in with your Microsoft account.

   PlayStation and Nintendo Switch Launch Minecraft and select Settings. Select Profile, and then click Sign out of your Microsoft Account. Select Sign in for free! to receive a code. Visit the on-screen website on a different device, enter the code, and then enter your account information.

   Android, iOS, Kindle Fire Launch Minecraft and select Settings. Select Profile, and then select Sign out of your Microsoft Account. Tap Sign out again, and then restart Minecraft. Select Sign In, and then enter your Microsoft account information.
