Anime & manga expert Mel Mascarenhas explains when these marks appear and what they do
PDF download Download Article

In the world of Demon Slayer, the strongest Slayers can awaken a special Mark, which usually appears on their face, chest, or arms. These Marks imbue the Slayers with enhanced strength, speed, and agility—but it takes a serious toll on them. For this article, we partnered with an anime & manga expert to help us explain what the marks are, which Slayers have them, how to unlock one and their pros and cons. Let’s get started!

Section 1 of 8:

What is the Demon Slayer Mark?

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to Mascarenhas, the marks have different shapes and sizes and appear in different areas. “Whenever [a slayer] is going all out and basically maxing out on their potential, the marks grow in size and they get darker,” she says.[1] The Mark appears during intensely stressful battles and grants the Slayer increased powers, like superhuman speed and strength, but at a steep cost. Specifically, it carries a curse that prevents the wearer from living beyond the age of 25.[2]
    • The Slayer Mark is usually temporary, but it can return again if the Slayer needs it. However, the Mark can be long-lasting in some cases.
    • Typically (but not always), the Slayer Mark physically resembles the Slayer’s Breathing Technique (e.g., a flame-like design for a Slayer who uses Fire Breathing).

Origins of the Demon Slayer Mark

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Demon Slayer Mark originates from the Golden Age of Demon Slayers. During the Sengoku period, or an era of frequent war and social upheaval in Japanese society, there was a legendary Golden Age of Demon Slayers. These Demon Slayers created the first Breathing Styles, each of which was represented as a mark on their bodies (these marks are now known as Demon Slayer Marks). The very first person with a Demon Slayer Mark was Yoriichi Tsugikuni, who was born with the mark and who later spread it to all other members of the Demon Slayer Corps.[3]

Conditions for Unlocking a Demon Slayer Mark

  1. For instance, the Demon Slayer Mark appears after a Slayer survives a near-death situation. However, it typically goes away shortly afterward. (The exception to this is Yoriichi, who was born with the Mark). Here are the conditions a Slayer must meet for the mark to appear:[4]
    • Their heart rate must reach 200 bpm.
    • Their body temperature must reach 39 °C (102 °F).
    • They must survive this state.
    • They must have been in contact with someone who already has the mark. (The Mark is shared with other Slayers through Resonance.)

Abilities Granted By the Demon Slayer Mark

  1. When a Slayer awakens the Mark, they gain increased speed, stamina, and strength. They’re also better able to resist incoming attacks, and their sense of perception is heightened. The boost in power can help the Slayer make it through a battle against powerful demons—but it comes at a great cost. We’ll talk about the curse of the Slayer Mark in the section below.[5]
    • The blade of the Slayer’s Nichirin sword turns bright red, giving it extra strength and power.[6]
    • The Slayer may also gain access to the Transparent World, allowing them to see inside a person’s body, as if their skin is transparent.[7]
    • The creators of the Demon Slayer manga and anime haven’t confirmed exactly how much the Mark multiplies the Slayer’s powers, but some fans (like in this power scaling wiki) estimate it to be at least 5x.

Demon Slayers with a Mark

  1. Mascarenhas says that Tanjiro’s mark appeared on his forehead following an accident when he was young.[8] Specifically, the mark appeared while trying to save his brother from boiling water. Mascarenhas explains that as the story progresses and Tanjiro becomes a Demon Slayer who fights demons, the mark gets darker and bigger, especially during intense battles, and it enhances his abilities.[9] The mark starts to look very similar to those of Yoriichi and Tanjiro’s own father, Tanjuro. Eventually, it extends almost all the way to his chin.[10]
    • Appearance: Flames
  2. Muichiro awakened his Slayer Mark when the demon Gyokko (Upper Moon 5) trapped him in water. With the Mark activated, Muichiro was able to defeat the demon, saving the Swordsmith village.[11]
    • Appearance: Mist/clouds
  3. Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira, activated her Slayer Mark in her fight against Zohakuten. She did so accidentally—by attempting to strengthen her circulation, she inadvertently increased her heart rate and body temperature, causing her to meet the conditions for awakening the Mark.[12]
    • Appearance: Hearts with wings
  4. Giyu awakened his Slayer Mark in a fight against Akaza, an Upper Rank 3 demon. He uses his increased power to defeat Akaza, then manifests his Mark again later in the fight against Muzan.[13]
    • Appearance: Flowing water
  5. Gyomei, the Stone Hashira, awakened his Slayer Mark in a battle against Kokushibo (Upper Moon 1). Unfortunately, because Gyomei was already over the age of 25 when this occurred, activating his Mark meant he would die shortly afterward—making this an especially heroic sacrifice.[14]
    • Appearance: Cracked earth
  6. Sanemi also faced Kokushibo as a Wind Hashira, and like Gyomei, this encounter forced him to activate his Slayer Mark. The Mark gave him the increased power he needed to keep battling, even after receiving serious injuries.[15]
    • Appearance: Windmill
  7. Obanai, the Serpent Hashira, awakens his Mark while fighting the Demon King Muzan. This doesn’t make him stronger than the Demon King, but it does help buy his team some time in the battle.[16]
    • Appearance: Serpents
  8. Yoriichi Tsugikuni is a unique case among Demon Slayers. He was born with his Mark, and it’s thought to be the reason he so effortlessly became the greatest swordsman of all time. He was not susceptible to the Curse of the Mark and lived to the age of 80.[17]
    • Appearance: Flames
  9. Yoriichi’s brother, Michikatsu, was afraid of dying at the age of 25. To avoid death, he accepted an offer from the Demon King Muzan, becoming the demon Kokushibo. He then lived for several more centuries.[18]
    • Appearance: Flames

Curse of the Slayer Mark

  1. Manifesting the Mark means the Slayer has tapped into an incredible well of powers. Unfortunately, those powers take a huge toll on the human body. Because of this, any Slayer with the mark only has a life span of about 25 years.[19]
    • There are two known exceptions: Yorushii, who was born with the mark, lived to be 80, and his brother Michikatsu (the demon Kokushibo) lived for four centuries.[20]
    • Slayers who are over the age of 25 when they first awaken the Mark, like Gyomei, will only live a few hours.[21]

Fan Reactions to the Demon Slayer Mark

PDF download Download Article
  1. Many fans see the Mark as underwhelming or not worth the Curse. While some viewers argue that the Demon Slayer Mark is needed so that Demon Slayers are able to fight against high-ranking demons, others aren’t too happy about the Mark and its lore.
    • For one, some fans feel that the Mark is basically just a shortcut to power scaling, which undermines the human discipline and training shown throughout the show.
      • Reddit user u/AdAdvanced8522 writes that “Demon Slayer has always carried the message that human willpower can rival even the supernatural, so giving the characters a sudden power-up kind of undermines that theme.”
    • Other fans, meanwhile, think the marks are just underwhelming and lack some cool, dramatic animations.
      • Reddit user u/-getsome-, for instance, says, “I wish they could've added some flaming animation thing when [Muitchiro and Mitsuri] got their mark, like how Tanjiro's mark appears/grows larger.”
    • Mostly, there’s a lot of fan controversy about the “Curse” and the fact that the Mark limits the Slayer’s lifespan to just 25 years. Many fans, including this user on Reddit, argue that “the amount of sacrifice required for it is too high for the reward they get.”
    • However, others argue that the intense sacrifice is the whole point. As Reddit user u/KaynGiovanna points out, “the whole point [is that] humans have to sacrifice so many things to have a CHANCE against the strongest demons. It’s not a fair fight, as Tanjiro said.”

  • Sanemi’s brother Genya consumes a piece of Kokushibo’s sword, temporarily transforming into an imitation of the demon. During this transformation, he has markings on his face identical to Kokushibo’s, but these are typically thought to be a copy—not true Marks.[22]
