Resident Evil has been a massively popular survival horror game since the release of its first installment in 1996. With the release of Resident Evil: Requiem, the latest Resident Evil game from the video game developer Capcom, it is time to look back on all the games of the series and recap the endless thrills and horrors. Just be warned, there are SPOILERS AHEAD!
- Resident Evil (1996): Resident Evil is the first game of the series and features protagonists Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, two members of the elite task force S.T.A.R.S., separated from their teammates and forced to navigate a murderous mansion filled with monsters. The series’ recurring virus and bioweapon themes are introduced as the main characters discover that Umbrella, a pharmaceutical corporation secretly developing bioweapons, caused the virus outbreak that is turning people into zombies.
- Resident Evil 2 (1998, remake in 2019): In Resident Evil 2, players can play as either college student Claire Redfield, sister of Chris Redfield from the first game, or rookie cop Leon Kennedy. The plots for the original 1998 version and the remake in 2019 are slightly different, but share the overarching narrative. Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy must survive the zombie-infested Raccoon City, which has fallen victim to the deadly viruses of Umbrella’s research, while fending off mutated researchers and bloodthirsty bioweapons.
- Resident Evil 3 (1999, remake in 2020): Jill Valentine, former S.T.A.R.S. police officer, is the protagonist of Resident Evil 3. Taking place only 24 hours before the events of Resident Evil 2, Jill Valentine is targeted by Nemesis, a powerful bioweapon developed by Umbrella, as Raccoon City is experiencing its first rounds of zombie outbreaks. She must continuously survive encounters with Nemesis while attempting to escape the infested city before it is destroyed by a missile strike sent by the U.S. government.
- Resident Evil 4 (2005, remake in 2023): Resident Evil 4 brings Leon Kennedy back into the spotlight 6 years after he first survived Raccoon City. Now a U.S. government agent, he is sent by the President of the United States to retrieve his daughter, Ashley Graham, after she has been kidnapped by a cult in Spain. Captured and infected with the same mind-controlling parasite as the cultists, Leon must complete his mission to rescue Ashley while attempting to search for a cure to the infection.
- Resident Evil 5 (2009): Resident Evil 5 follows Chris Redfield, protagonist from the first Resident Evil game, and Sheva Alomar, his new partner with the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance, to intercept a bioweapon trade on the black market. It is the first Resident Evil game designed for co-op two-player gameplay, and as Chris and Sheva, the players must fight mutated monsters and evil masterminds to discover the truth of the past.
- Resident Evil 6 (2012): Resident Evil 6 weaves together stories from four main characters: Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, Jake Muller (son of a major villain in previous Resident Evil games) and Ada Wong (a recurring and enigmatic spy character). This time, the characters must prevent bioterrorism on a global scale by investigating Neo-Umbrella and its leaders.
- Resident Evil 7 (2017): Resident Evil 7 introduces Ethan Winters, who is trying to find his missing wife Mia on a derelict plantation. The mission is off to a rocky start, however, as Ethan finds but must immediately kill an infected Mia who attacks him. As Ethan investigates, he learns about the mystery of Mia’s disappearance and the fate of the infected family on the plantation.
- Resident Evil Village (2021): Ethan Winters is back in Resident Evil Village, and this time he must rescue his infant daughter Rose from a European village. Overrun by werewolves and ruled by the witch-like Mother Miranda, Ethan must overcome the mutant lords to save his daughter from possession.
- Resident Evil Requiem (2026): Resident Evil Requiem brings back Leon Kennedy, now middle-aged, jaded, and more expert at shooting zombies than ever, and sends him on a mission to save Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst who has been kidnapped by a former Umbrella scientist. Leon must return to Raccoon City and, along with Grace, defeat the forces of evil that hope to control the world with the use of bioweapons.

In the original story, Claire Redfield is imprisoned on a gothic island after the events of Resident Evil 2, having been discovered raiding an Umbrella facility. Chris Redfield tracks her whereabouts and the sibling duo team up to destroy the newest strain of the T-virus.
