Server tags are a relatively new Discord feature that lets you create a short "tag" for your server. This tag will be displayed across Discord next to the names of users who choose to show it off. In this article, we'll teach you how to create and edit a server tag as a server owner, plus we'll also teach you how to apply that tag. Read on to learn how.
Quick Steps
- Click on Server Boosts in your server.
- Make sure you have three available server boosts in your server.
- Hover the "Server Tag" perk.
- Click Enable.
- Add your server tag name and pick a badge and color.
Steps
How to Make a Server Tag
-
Get three server boosts on your server. You must have three available server boosts to unlock the server tag perk. To see how many server boosts you have, click the Server Boosts tab in your Discord server, then check how many boosts are available in the right-hand sidebar.
- Note: You can only create a server tag on the desktop version of Discord.
- If you have at least three total boosts, you can always disable your server boost level perks to free up some boosts for a server tag. To disable a perk, hover over it and click the button with a boost icon crossed out.
- You must pay for server boosts, but Discord Nitro users get two free server boosts per month, plus they also get a discount on paid server boosts. You must be the server's owner or an admin to create a server tag for that server.
-
Hover the Server Tag option and click Enable. Three available server boosts will be "spent" (though you can get them back by disabling the server tag perk). If you want to get additional server tag badges, click on the Server Tag Badge Packs perk and enable whichever of the packs (or both!) that you want (so long as you have the boosts available to get them).
- If you want to use certain special server tag badges, you'll need to get a couple more server boosts. The Pet Badge Pack unlocks with an additional 3 boosts, while the Flex Badge Pack unlocks with 5 additional boosts.

Create your server tag. Once the server tag perk has been redeemed, you'll get a pop-up window where you can set your server tag and pick a badge and color for it. If you also enabled either of the extra badge packs, these badges will be available to pick as well.[1]
How to Edit Your Server Tag
-
Open your server settings. To do this, navigate to your server, then click on the server's name in the upper-left part of the screen. This will bring up a drop-down menu. In this menu, click on Server Settings.
- Note: You can only edit a server tag on the desktop version of Discord.
-
Click Server Tag. It's in the left-hand sidebar. If you don't see the Server Tag option, server tags likely aren't enabled for your server.
-
Edit the server tag's name, badge, and color. Once you're happy with the edits to your server tag, click the green Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen.[2]
How to Apply Your Server Tag
-
Open your Discord settings. You can add a server tag in either the Discord desktop app or mobile app. Here's how to open your settings on both:
- Desktop: Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the screen, next to your name and the global mute and deafen buttons.
- Mobile: Tap the You button at the bottom of the screen.
-
Edit your profile. Here's how to do it on desktop and mobile:
- Desktop: Click the blue Edit User Profile button on the main Settings page.
- Mobile: Tap the Edit Profile button under your name, pronouns, and badges, near the top of the screen.
-
Scroll down until you see the "Server Tag" option. It's near the bottom of the menu on both desktop and mobile.
-
Click the dropdown and choose a tag. All servers with server tags you're in will be displayed here. You can choose any available tag to display on your profile.
- If you're in a community server and haven't completed the first-time server setup (such as agreeing to the rules), you won't be able to use that tag until you do. If you try to use a server tag from that server, you'll get an error when you try to apply it until you fix the issue.
