Izuku Midoriya (Deku)First, there’s Izuku “Deku” Midoriya, MHA’s lovable protagonist. He’s a driven pro-hero who wasn’t born with a quirk, devoting himself to the hero’s life despite his lack of powers. His pure-hearted desire to help people caught the eye of All Might, a legendary pro-hero whose abilities are passed down from user to user, growing with each iteration. And, as the new All Might-in-training, Deku definitely makes waves!^{[1]

Katsuki BakugoBakugo is just as well-known as Deku, though not always for positive reasons; he’s Deku’s childhood friend-turned-bully, and spends a good portion of the series being cruel to Deku. However, he also might just have the biggest arc in terms of character development, because he doesn’t stay an arrogant bully—in time, he becomes a better team player and a powerful hero.^{[2]

Shoto TodorokiTodoroki is widely beloved for many reasons, not the least of which is his generally thoughtful and altruistic attitude despite having an excessively harsh childhood. He’s the son of another pro hero, Endeavor, and the training Endeavor put him through had a profound effect on Todoroki—but it didn’t diminish his heroism. And though he starts the series aloof and reserved, he forms closer bonds with his classmates over time.

Ochaco UrarakaUraraka is another of Midoriya’s classmates (and his eventual love interest). She’s known for being a bubbly, laid-back, and generally very likable presence in Class 1-A! She’s a constant source of positivity, to the point that she even helped Midoriya find a brighter side to his childhood nickname, “Deku,” which inspired him to choose it for his hero name, too.

Tenya IdaTenya Ida is Class 1-A’s esteemed representative! And while he can definitely seem intimidating, he’s actually a nice guy—smart, earnest, and focused. Sure, he might not have all of his social skills mastered at first, but he means well. Raised by his older brother, Tensei, Ida also shares a Hero Name with him (with both of them going by “Turbo Hero”).

Eijiro KirishimaKirishima, AKA Red Riot, is known primarily for two things. Firstly, his hardening quirk gives him some pretty great (not to mention crucial) moments in MHA as a fighter—and secondly, he’s one of the few people who’s able to get along with Bakugo before Bakugo undergoes a ton of character development. In fact, Kirishima is probably to thank for a good amount of Bakugo’s character development, simply by being his friend!

Denki KaminariDenki Kaminari has an electrical quirk with some potentially problematic side effects, given the fact that it affects his mind when he uses it. But, alongside many of his classmates, Kanimari actually learns to make his quirk more effective and useful in battle over time—and at one point, he uses it to attract electricity, stopping his friends from getting seriously hurt!

Momo YaoyorozuMomo is a striking character whose hero costume shows a surprising amount of skin—but there’s a reason for it. Her creation quirk allows her to create objects with her own fat cells, which is why she leaves as much of her skin bare as possible (without being too vulnerable or indecent). It makes her a fun and versatile hero to watch in battle, with a ton of potential in the future!

Yuga AoyamaYuga Aoyama’s quirk sounds really silly, since he pretty much has the power to fire off laser beams from his navel. But he’s actually had some pretty clutch moments in the show (and sure, a few funny ones, too), using his navel laser to wreak havoc on enemies in a flash. He doesn’t have a huge role in the show until the final season, but he still makes his moments count!

Fumikage TokoyamiFumikage Tokoyami’s quirk gives him control of a sentient shadow monster that materializes from his body. It’s a powerful quirk, and it gets even stronger with the absence of light—but the stronger it gets, the harder it is to control. Fumikage himself definitely embraces being a “creature of the dark,” but that doesn’t make him sinister—he’s still a dedicated hero who cares for his friends.

Mashirao OjiroMashirao Ojiro’s quirk is simple, yet effective: he has a long tail that he can use in battle, combining it with his knowledge of martial arts to strike enemies and perform some pretty impressive moves. And his tail is malleable enough that he can strike the ground with it and use it like a springboard, propelling himself forward. He’s not the most prominent member of Class 1-A, but he’s a reliable one!

Hanta SeroHanta Sero’s super ability is a little unconventional for a future Pro Hero: he can project or retract long, cellophane-like tape from his body. That’s pretty much it! While his quirk definitely isn’t as flashy as some of his classmates, he’s still shown making good use of it in fights throughout the series—after all, when you need to stop an enemy in their tracks, why not wrap them up in tape?

Rikido SatoRikido Sato has the “Sugar Rush” quirk—the more he consumes sugar, the stronger he gets, up to 5x stronger for three minutes. It’s a relatively simple (if unusual) quirk, but it still enables him to hone his strength and mass for maximum impact in battles. There are a few moments in the Final Exams arc in which he shines, although he mostly stays in the background for the majority of MHA.

Mezo ShojiMezo Shoji’s Class 1-A’s many-armed man; he can manipulate his multiple sets of arms like tentacles and even incorporate other body parts with them! And although he looks hardcore—being very tall and all—he’s actually a pretty nice, chill guy overall. He’s principled and protective, using his quirk to keep his friends safe.

Mina AshidoMina Ashido may not be a main character in Class 1-A, but she makes a great impression: she’s upbeat, energetic, athletic, and courageous—the perfect formula for a Pro Hero. She also has a potent Acid quirk, allowing her to produce corrosive acid and manipulate potency. It’s a great offensive and utility quirk, and Mina can even use a non-corrosive version of the acid to slide around on her feet!

Koji KodaKoji Koda is a nature boy, through and through—literally, since he can control all animals. And since his head resembles a rock more than it does a regular human head! And although he looks powerful and rock-like, Koji is a shy guy, preferring to stay in the background and even use sign language (although he can talk; he just doesn’t like doing it much).

Toru HagakureToru Hagakure is one of the hardest characters in Class 1-A to describe…because her quirk is invisibility, so nobody can actually see her. For that reason, Toru is usually more of a background character—though, in her defense, part of her power is going unnoticed until the ideal moment. Regardless, Invisible Girl comes into her own as MHA progresses, pulling off heroic feats alongside her classmates.

Tsuyu AsuiTsuyu is Class 1-A’s lovable “frog girl”—referring, of course, to her Quirk. That’s because Tsuyu’s Quirk basically gives her the physiology and abilities of a frog, enabling her to do anything a frog can do (and, yes, a few more things, too). She’s a powerful swimmer and jumper with a stretchy tongue that extends outward, and she can even stick to walls or camouflage herself!

Kyoka JiroKyoka Jiro is a member of Class 1-A with a Quirk that gives her a pair of headphone jacks attached to her earlobes. As benign as that might seem, she can actually do a whole lot with her Quirk—including plugging her headphone jacks into her surroundings to detect things an average person couldn’t, and project powerful soundwaves from her hero costume.

Minoru MinetaMinoru Mineta is Class 1-A’s shortest student. He’s also notorious for being way too obsessed with girls, to the point that he’s definitely not a fan-favorite member of the class. In terms of Quirks, Mineta can produce ball-shaped objects from his head that can stick to surfaces, while also enabling Mineta alone to bounce off of them.^{[3]

Mirio TogataNow, we come to students outside of Class 1-A, starting with Mirio Togata: one of U.A. High School’s top students overall. He’s a student in Class 3-B and one of the “Big 3” (the three strongest third-year students in the school). In fact, Mirio might’ve become the new owner of One For All had Deku not caught All Might’s eye! His quirk allows him to become intangible, and he’s a prodigious fighter by students’ standards.

Toshinori Yagi (All Might)Toshinori Yagi is better-known as “All Might,” the former No. 1 Hero and Deku’s childhood idol—who later becomes Deku’s mentor, passing on the One For All quirk to him. Of course, giving his quirk to Deku left All Might quirkless once more (albeit still retaining residual energy from the quirk), and he retired from Pro Hero life, instead becoming the Foundational Hero Studies teacher at U.A. High School.

Shota Aizawa (Eraser Head)Shota Aizawa, AKA “Eraser Head,” is Class 1-A’s beloved homeroom teacher—and a powerful Pro Hero in his own right! That’s because Aizawa’s quirk allows him to cancel out other quirks for a limited time, effectively rendering enemies powerless. And throughout the series, Aizawa reliably uses his powers (and his hand-to-hand combat skills) to protect his students… while teaching them to become the best they can be.^{[4]

Hizashi Yamada (Present Mic)Present Mic is U.A. High School’s English teacher. Still, his backstory goes deeper than that—he’s also an old friend of Aizawa’s and Oboro Shirokumo’s, which means he and Aizawa go through a harrowing ordeal after learning the truth of Oboro’s fate. Beyond that, however, Yamada is a jovial person with the ability to produce a sonic scream through his Quirk, “Voice.”

Ken Ishiyama (Cementoss)A member of U.A.’s faculty, Cementoss teaches Modern Literature…and, yes, he’s basically a human-shaped block of cement. Fittingly, his Quirk enables him to manipulate any cement-based materials—and it gives him an impressively versatile range of moves on the battlefield.

SnipeSnipe is the U.A. teacher in charge of all third-year students, and it’s a duty he takes seriously. Reminiscent of old-school Western cowboys, Snipe is a tried-and-true gunslinger and marksmanship specialist—and his Quirk, “Homing,” allows him to lock onto his targets before launching projectiles. Beyond that, he’s a dedicated staff member who does his best to prepare his students for life as Pro Heroes.

EctoplasmEctoplasm is U.A.’s math teacher. The job description might sound a little underwhelming, but Ectoplasm is well-suited for it—especially since his Quirk is basically the power to replicate himself! And although his main teaching role is mathematics, he still helps students with combat training here and there, being one of U.A.’s strongest faculty members.

Nemuri Kayama (Midnight)Midnight is U.A.’s Modern Hero Art History teacher as well as a Pro Hero—and her Quirk is an unusual one, allowing her to put people to sleep by producing a “sleeping fragrance” from her skin. She’s definitely a little oversexualized, especially for a teacher, but she still does her utmost for her students.

Enji Todoroki (Endeavor)Enji Todoroki is a Pro Hero—and the father of Shoto Todoroki, one of Class 1-A’s best. Unfortunately, Enji wasn’t a good father for much of his life, focusing more on his hero career and on producing a child with the power to surpass All Might (something he himself never managed to do). But, in time, Enji starts to learn the error of his ways, growing beyond the bitterness of living in All Might’s shadow.

Sorahiko Torino (Gran Torino)Gran Torino is another of Deku’s mentors—and he was All Might’s mentor, too! That’s why Gran Torino is the one to teach Deku to control the One For All quirk. And although retired, Gran Torino is still super capable, using his “Jet” Quirk to zoom around through the air and gain incredible bursts of speed (not to mention insanely strong kicks, too).

Rumi Usagiyama (Mirko)Mirko is introduced as the mighty No. 5 Pro Hero—she’s strong, outspoken, and ready to defeat any villain who crosses her. Her Quirk, “Rabbit,” might not seem that powerful (since it just gives her the attributes of a rabbit), but she can use it to jump, kick, and even destroy areas of the ground with the strength in her legs and feet.

NezuNezu—U.A. High School’s principal—is a unique case: an animal who manifested a Quirk! Nezu is a white stoat-like creature, but his Quirk, “High Specs,” gives him an intelligence that surpasses most humans. Because of it, Nezu lives more or less like a human, and he’s a Pro Hero, to boot.^{[5]

Chiyo Shuzenji (Recovery Girl)Recovery Girl is U.A.’s kindly nurse, and one of its older faculty members—but that doesn’t mean her Quirk isn’t a potent one. “Heal” allows Chiyo to speed up a body’s natural healing process and regenerative abilities, enabling her to do everything from healing open wounds to broken bones. Anan Kurose (Thirteen)Thirteen is another of U.A.’s faculty members as well as a Pro Hero—one who specializes in search and rescue efforts despite the dangers of her own Quirk, Black Hole. Chizome Akaguro (Hero Killer: Stain)The main antagonist of the Vs. Hero Killer arc, Chizome is—as his moniker suggests—known for slaying a great number of Pro Heroes. More specifically, he kills heroes that he deems “unworthy” of claiming such a mantle, which just goes to show what a warped sense of righteousness he has. And although Chizome is a villain, he doesn’t go out of his way to help other villains, either.

Freed from imprisonment in Tartarus (a special prison for dangerous villains), Chisaki’s villainous motive is a notable one that stands out among MHA’s other baddies: he’s determined to eradicate all Quirks from the world, believing them to be a plague on humanity.

GigantomachiaAs his name suggests, Gigantomachia is enormous—a literal giant of a man. As part of his Quirk, he actually gets increasingly larger as his anxiety grows—which basically means he’s always growing during fights. And although he wasn’t always more weapon than person, he’s barely able to communicate by the time the League of Villains unleashes him during the Metal Liberation Army arc.

Himiko TogaHimiko Toga is one of MHA’s standout villains—a “yandere” (violently obsessive romantic) with twisted, unstable emotions who, deep down, doesn’t want to be evil. But on the surface, she’s utterly bloodthirsty and seemingly sadistic. She also develops an unhealthy attachment to Deku in the series…but it’s Ochaco who gets through to Himiko most in the end.^{[7]

Tomura ShigarakiTomura Shigaraki is All for One’s successor, and the terrifying leader of the League of Villains. And although All For One’s vestige tried to take control of Tomura’s body, he managed to reclaim autonomy through his strength of will—and he became Deku’s avowed arch-enemy instead. With twisted motives and a horrifying backstory, Tomura’s arc on the show is definitely an enthralling one!

DabiDabi, AKA “Blueflame,” is one of MHA’s tragic villains—and an older sibling of Shoto Todoroki. His real name was “Toya Todoroki”; his father, Enji, was neglectful and ruthless toward Dabi, causing Dabi to turn to villainy for revenge against his family. As a result, it’s easy to sympathize with Dabi despite his “villain” status as one driven to evil through a childhood of pain and suffering.

KurogiriKurogiri is yet another member of the League of Villains, and his villainous name, Black Fog, pretty much reflects his appearance: his body is made from a black-purple fog, save for his yellow eyes. A loyal ally to All For One and Tomura, Kurogiri uses his powers to support both of them in MHA—but his backstory is far more complicated (and tragic) than it might seem at first glance.^{[8]

Jin Bubaigawara (Twice)Twice is yet another standout villain in MHA with more depth and intrigue than most. His chaotic personality is the result of an identity crisis: he believes understanding one’s identity to be crucial, yet doesn’t know if he himself is a clone or not. That’s because Twice’s Quirk allows him to create clones of himself, and a days-long fight with his clones left him unsure if he himself is a clone or the original Bubaigawara.

Of course, his villain name is “Muscular,” and it’s a pretty fitting one. His Quirk basically enables him to augment and enhance his muscles to an insane degree, giving him a powerful punch as well as boosted speed and durability in battle.^{[9]
