Class 1-A is the homeroom for many fan-favorite My Hero Academia characters, including Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki. But how much do you actually know about the other 1-A students? For this article, we spoke to anime experts to teach you everything you need to know about the 1-A students (including their personalities, hero names, and Quirks) and rank them strongest to weakest.   1. Anime expert Nicole Favarelli states that Midoriya is the main character, and at first, he’s a “classic nerdy guy:” “He’s short, skinny, he looks like a child compared to many others, and he has no superpower… But his biggest dream in life is to be a hero, so he tries anyway.”[1] He ends up inheriting the Quirk One for All from All Might, which grants him incredible levels of strength, speed, stamina, and agility.

  3. Shoto Todoroki starts out as a cold, aloof boy recognized by his half red, half white hair and the burn scar that covers half his face. As his hair suggests, Todoroki has both fire and ice powers thanks to his Quirk. Favarelli explains, “His journey is more of a self-discovery of his own purpose and detaching himself from his father, [who] was already a famous hero, [and] not wanting to follow in the steps of his own dad.”[5]

  4. Momo Yaoyorozu is a natural leader who is polite, calm and reserved, but who can also be very blunt when her classmates make mistakes. Anime expert Inferno Jae explains that Yaoyorozu’s Quirk allows her to create things.[7] She can spawn any non-living object from her exposed skin. The more she eats, the more she can create.

  5. Jae says Uraraka is one of the main female characters in My Hero Academia. She’s one of Deku’s best friends, and her Quirk is Gravity, meaning she can apply or take away gravity from anything she touches.[8] She’s very bubbly and always tries to maintain a positive attitude.

  6. Tenya Ida is the class representative for Class 1-A. He comes from a long line of heroes and wants to live up to his family name. He’s intelligent and sophisticated, though he can sometimes be a bit clueless. Thanks to his Quirk, he has engines growing out of the backs of his calves, which give him incredible speed and strong kicking abilities.[9]

  7. Tokoyami has the body of a human boy and the head of a black bird. He’s typically quiet and serious, though he can become more social when teaming up with others. His Quirk, Dark Shadow, allows him to summon sentient shadows. The shadows’ strength is determined by how light or dark the area is.[10]

  8. Kirishima is a muscular student with spiky red hair and matching red eyes. He’s obsessed with being manly and is generally an outgoing person. He admires those who are noble and brave, and he’s good friends with Bakugo. His Quirk, Hardening, grants him the ability to harden and sharpen any part of his body.[11]

  9. Denki Kaminari is an energetic boy with blond hair with a black lightning-shaped streak on the side. As you can probably guess from his character design, his Quirk is electricity-based. He can store electricity in his body and discharge it, but using too much of his power makes him short-circuit, leaving him practically useless for an hour.[12]

  10. Tsuyu’s Quirk is Frog, and it’s obvious from her appearance. She has long green hair, a wide mouth, and often hops instead of walking. Her Quirk also allows her to do anything a frog can; she can extend her tongue 63 ft (20 m) and use it to lift people, and she can stick to walls. She’s pretty straightforward and levelheaded, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind.[13]

  11. At first glance, Hanta Sero looks like an average student… until you realize he has tape dispensers for elbows. His Quirk is literally tape—he shoots out tape from his body and uses it to tie up his opponents or to pull himself to different locations. Hanta is a pretty social and confident student, and he’s not afraid to call his classmates out when they’re acting out.[14]

  12. Jiro is a blunt and sarcastic girl most recognized by the permanent earphone jacks that extend from her earlobes. This is thanks to her Quirk, which allows her to plug the jacks into things, channel her heartbeat, and create massive vibrations. She also has incredible hearing, which allows her to pick up on the quietest sounds and smallest vibrations.[15]

  13. Mina is a cheerful and excitable girl who happens to be pink from head to toe. She also has horns and black and yellow eyes, and her appearance is associated with her Quirk, Acid. Her Quirk allows her to shoot corrosive acid from her body, though using it too much could be fatal.[16]

  14. At first glance, Mezo Shoji is a frightening sight to see. He’s tall and muscular, and he has 6 arms. In addition to his extra arms, his Quirk also gives him a set of tentacles, which he can use to replicate other body parts, which in turn enhances his senses. But despite his tough appearance, he’s a gentle, selfless person.[17]

  15. Mashirao is a hard worker who’s very humble and doesn’t enjoy the spotlight. He’s often described as “plain,” but he’s anything but; he has a large tail that also serves as his Quirk. His tail is strong enough to break metal objects, and when paired with his martial arts skills, he often uses it to take down enemies.[18]

  16. Koda has one of the most unique appearances of all the students in Class 1-A, as his head resembles a rock. Though he looks big and intimidating, he’s actually pretty timid and uses sign language instead of speaking. His Quirk, Anivoice, allows him to communicate with animals, and he seems to enjoy being around them more than people.[19]

  17. One of Sato’s most defining features is his large mouth, and it makes sense when you consider his Quirk—for every 10 grams of sugar he eats, his strength increases fivefold for 3 minutes. However, his intelligence decreases until the effects wear off. In his free time, Sato loves baking sweets for his classmates.[20]

  18. Toru Hagakure is a cheerful and easygoing girl. She loves shopping and anything cutesy, and she’s a romantic at heart. Her Quirk is invisibility, so people usually only know she’s around because her uniform is visible. Her Quirk also allows her to refract light and generate light to blind enemies.[21]

  19. Yuga Aoyama is a flamboyant young man who loves attention, even though his classmates often ignore him. Deep down, he’s actually pretty insecure and just wants to make friends. His Quirk, Navel Laser, is pretty much what it sounds like—he can shoot a sparkling laser from his navel.[22]

  20. Mineta is widely considered the least popular character in Class 1-A, and that’s because he’s a total pervert. He’s constantly thinking lewd thoughts and trying to spy on the girls. In fact, trying to get ladies is one of his main reasons for wanting to become a hero. His Quirk, Pop Off, allows him to remove the purple balls from his head and use them as projectiles.[23] Erskine also adds that Mineta “brings comedic timing into the show as well.”[24]

  1. Shota Aizawa is Class 1-A’s homeroom teacher. He’s constantly sleepy, but he has high expectations for his students. He’s also the pro hero Eraserhead, and his Erasure Quirk allows him to “erase” another person’s Quirk just by looking at them.[25]
  2. Hizashi Yamada is Class 1-A’s English teacher and the pro hero Present Mic. He’s loud and eccentric, often behaving like a radio host. This is because his Quirk is his voice—he can increase the volume at will, resulting in a supersonic scream that can make people’s ears bleed.[26]

  3. Toshinori Yagi, better known by his hero name All Might, teaches Foundational Hero Studies. According to anime expert Simon Zeng, All Might is essentially the “Superman” of the My Hero Academia universe.[27] Like Deku, he was born Quirkless but inherited the One for All Quirk from his mentor. He then passed the power onto Deku and began acting as his mentor.

  4. Ken Ishiyama teaches Modern Literature at UA High. He’s essentially a sentient, humanoid block of cement, better known by his hero name Cementoss. His Quirk allows him to manipulate anything made of cement simply by touching it.[28]
