Saturu Gojo might be the strongest modern sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, but he’s still fallible—as proven when the infamous “Prison Realm” is deployed against him. So, what is the Prison Realm, exactly? Well, it’s a powerful cursed object capable of sealing anyone or anything inside a pocket dimension, and it plays a major role during JJK’s Shibuya Incident story arc. In this article, we’ll explain how the Prison Realm works and (spoiler alert) how Kenjaku manages to trap Gojo with it. We’ll also explore Gojo’s time inside the Prison Realm, and beyond!

A Quick Overview of the Prison Realm in JJK

   The Prison Realm is a cursed object containing a pocket dimension. On the outside, it looks like a small box covered in strange, creepy eyes—but, when activated, the box can expand and envelop a target, trapping them in a pocket dimension removed from the rest of the world, and even time itself, explains Kaushal. The Prison Realm is a relic made from the body of Genshin, a Buddhist Monk, and it’s considered a “special grade” object, meaning it’s exceedingly powerful.

   • The Prison Realm is usually supposed to be wrapped with talismans when it isn’t being used, much like Sukuna’s fingers.

How the Prison Realm Works in Jujutsu Kaisen

   There are four “stages of sealing” associated with the Prison Realm. The incantation “gate open” activates the Prison Realm, causing it to expand into a mass of flesh with four corners stretching outward and a great, bleeding eye at the center. A target must remain within a 4-meter (13 ft) radius of the Prison Realm for 1 minute; if that condition is fulfilled, the flesh mass wraps around the target’s body. With the words “gate close,” the Prison Realm seals itself, trapping the target within.

   • Stage 1: Place the Prison Realm next to the target and use the “gate open” key phrase.
   • Stage 2: The Prison Realm opens, expanding at the corners.
   • Stage 3: After 1 minute passes within the target’s mind, the Prison Realm ensnares them.
   • Stage 4: Use the “gate close” key phrase; the Prison Realm’s Gate closes, completing the process.

   Once ensnared, a target is completely immobilized. They can’t move—and, more importantly, they can’t use their cursed energy; this prevents them from escaping before the Prison Realm is sealed, confirms Kaushal. After a minute passes in the target’s mind, the Prison Realm reacts in an instant, wrapping around them before they can act. But, again, this only works so long as the target stays within a 4-meter (13 ft) radius.

   • The Prison Realm can’t be used again while a victim is sealed inside. However, the exception is if a person inside takes their own life. In that case, the Prison Realm could be used without technically releasing them.

   Time passes differently for someone trapped within the Prison Realm. It essentially doesn’t pass at all, putting the trapped person in a sort of stasis with no real concept of time. Additionally, they won’t age (or die of thirst or starvation) while inside. And if that’s not enough, the interior of the prison is dark, full of skeletons and grasping limbs—a sinister atmosphere overall, to be sure.

   • A powerful jujutsu sorcerer—like Satoru Gojo—can have an effect on the Prison Realm, even while sealed.
   • Gojo, for instance, manages to cause several eyes on the box’s surface to open. The Prison Realm even got heavy while it was “processing” him, making it temporarily impossible to move.

The Prison Realm’s “Back Gate” in Jujutsu Kaisen

   The Prison Realm has a conceptual “Front Gate” and “Back Gate.” The Front Gate is its main method of opening and closing (basically, the 4-stage process outlined above, with an incantation used to open the box, trap a person, and close it again). Normally, once the Prison Realm is sealed, only the person controlling the Front Gate can open it again. However, there’s also a “Back Gate” that can be used to break open the Prison Realm.

   • Master Tengen originally sealed the Back Gate in an attempt to hide the Prison Realm, but Kenjaku (Pseudo-Geto) foiled that plan by finding the Front Gate overseas.
   • Even someone in possession of the Back Gate couldn’t automatically unseal the Prison Realm—it’d still take the use of a cursed technique or cursed tool that can nullify others to free someone trapped inside the Prison.

Who uses the Prison Realm in Jujutsu Kaisen?

   Kenjaku (Pseudo-Geto) uses the Prison Realm to seal Satoru Gojo. Knowing Gojo couldn’t be defeated by conventional means, Kenjaku resolves to trap him instead, and hatches a long-term plan to do so that culminates with the Shibuya Incident. Kenjaku amasses a group of allied special grade curses to help him with this, and together, they lure Gojo to Shibuya Station by trapping hundreds of civilian non-sorcerers inside.

   • Kenjaku’s team of special grades include Mahito—arguably the most powerful—as well as Jogo, Hanami, and Choso (who is actually a half-curse, with the other half of him being human).
   • The entire time leading up to the Shibuya Incident, Kenjaku makes a point to avoid being seen by anyone—especially Gojo.

   Kenjaku’s plan hinged on distracting Gojo with Geto’s body. Kenjaku is an incredibly powerful ancient sorcerer with the power to take over another person’s body—and to trap Gojo, he occupies the body of Suguru Geto, Gojo’s former best friend. Upon springing his trap with the Prison Realm, Kenjaku reveals himself to Gojo for the first time, and the sight of his friend’s body causes Gojo to be flooded with memories of Geto.

   • In reality, Gojo is only distracted for an instant—but it’s a minute’s worth of time inside Gojo’s mind, and that’s enough for the Prison Realm to take hold.
   • So, the Prison Realm doesn’t actually have to be near a target for a full, real-time minute. So long as a minute passes in some way, it’ll ensnare its target.
   • Kenjaku also manages to trap Gojo inside the Prison Realm by exhausting his cursed technique, which he does by forcing Gojo to use his domain expansion to save the non-sorcerers inside Shibuya Station.
   • After ensnaring Gojo, Kenjaku (Pseudo-Geto) is able to re-seal the Prison Realm and trap him inside before escaping from Shibuya Station.

How does Gojo escape the Prison Realm?

   Hana Kurusu (Angel) unseals Gojo with her cursed technique. Unable to open the Prison Realm conventionally, Yuji and Megumi seek to do so through the power of an ancient sorcerer called “Angel,” who’s been incarnated into the body of Hana Kurusu. Angel’s cursed technique is called Jacob’s Ladder, and it has the ability to negate all cursed techniques within range—including the curse keeping Gojo sealed!

   • Master Tengen—an immortal guardian of Jujutsu High—is the one who tells Yuji, Megumi, and their allies to find Angel.
   • After they meet her, Angel uses her technique and releases Gojo at the end of the Culling Game arc.

   Kenjaku tries to prevent Gojo’s escape by burying the Prison Realm. After escaping Shibuya with the Prison Realm, Kenjaku throws it into just about the hardest-to-reach place possible: an 8,000-meter trench (called the Japan Trench) in the Pacific Ocean, down to a place where the Pacific plate of the Earth’s crust subducts beneath the Okhotsk plate. Kenjaku assumed that, even if Gojo were released, he’d never survive emerging into the trench…but he was mistaken.

   • Miraculously—or, rather, because he’s Gojo—Gojo does escape the trench and its water pressure unscathed after Angel unseals him.

   Gojo’s allies are unsure how much he’ll be affected by the Prison Realm. Plenty of fans wonder what, exactly, Gojo did while inside the Prison Realm. And while we don’t see all of his time there, he managed to escape the Prison Realm with a stable mind (impressive, since plenty trapped there go insane). In Gojo’s case, he manages to withstand the Prison’s isolation by meditating, clearing his mind and mentally readying himself for whatever came next.

   • Before Gojo’s unsealing, concerns are raised about his mental state and what he’s been experiencing inside the Prison Realm, with the main worry being that he could lose control or snap and use his powers against his allies.
   • After being unsealed, however, Gojo simply says that time passed quickly for him, and that being inside the Prison Realm felt like “when work is insanely busy.”
   • Gojo also admits his time in the Prison Realm was so draining that he’d never want to go through the ordeal again.

How long is Gojo sealed in the Prison Realm?

   Satoru Gojo is sealed for roughly 19 days. That’s just in the manga so far—in the anime, he hasn’t been unsealed yet. But in the manga, he’s sealed from October 31 to November 19, for a total of about 19 days (although it didn’t necessarily feel like 19 days to Gojo himself). And in manga terms, Gojo gets sealed during chapter 90 and unsealed in chapter 221, so it felt like a much longer period of time to fans following the story.

   • In total, readers waited about 3 years for Gojo’s unsealing (from January 2020 when chapter 90 released, to April 2023 when chapter 221 released).
