Horror expert Robert Cook says SCP-3008 looks like a normal IKEA store on the outside. But anyone who enters gets trapped in SCP-3008-1: an endless IKEA. At night, SCP-3008-2, distorted humanoids, hunt and kill the humans inside. Survivors build fortified cities to survive the Staff, and only a few people have escaped.

SCP-3008-1 is a vast IKEA store without clear exits. The Infinite IKEA looks much like a regular IKEA, with rows and rows of flatpack furniture—but it’s so massive that it couldn’t possibly be contained within the original retail building. It extends for what seems to be miles in every direction, and the ceiling is so high that it can’t be seen. Here are some key characteristics of SCP-3008-1:^{[5]

- There are regular day and night cycles. The day/night cycle in the Infinite IKEA is controlled by the overheading lighting—the lights go off at 10 PM, marking the nighttime period when the IKEA “Staff” aggressively hunt civilians.
- Survivors have built civilizations. People have assembled into groups to fend off the Staff at night, explains Cook. Some groups use the furniture around the store to build fortresses, while others have built fortifications on the catwalks above the store floor.^{[6]

- Food and supplies are readily available. The IKEA is regularly restocked by mysterious means. Survivors go on daytime trips to gather food and water from the kitchen, and to find medical supplies and gear for fortifying cities and crafting weapons.
- Exits mysteriously appear and disappear. Exits do occasionally appear, but they don’t stay in one place for long, making it very difficult to escape. There are phones in the building, but a voice on the other end just speaks gibberish.

SCP-3008-2 are humanoid IKEA “Staff” that hunt humans at night. The Staff, or SCP-3008-2, wear the traditional IKEA employee uniform of a yellow shirt and blue pants. But you’re unlikely to mistake them for real employees. All of the employees are tall, faceless, humanoid entities, Cook explains.^{[7]

- At night, Staff hunt and kill the people who are trapped in the Infinite IKEA. As soon as the store closes, they become hostile and attack people on sight, Cook notes. While doing this, they politely repeat variations on the phrase, “The store is now closed, please exit the building.”^{[10]

- Civilians have crafted weapons to fight off the Staff. When the Staff attack, the survivors use knives (from the restaurants), lawnmower blades, fire axes, and even homemade crossbows to fight back.
- Staff are made entirely of skin. When people kill a Staff member, it appears to be made of skin all the way through—no blood or bones. They don’t decompose, but they do have to be removed from around the fortifications because one dead Staff (or even a piece of one) will draw more.

Is SCP-3008 contained?

Yes, SCP-3008 is largely contained by the Foundation. The SCP Foundation purchased the retail building that housed the SCP-3008 IKEA store. They also redirected any roads that led to or passed by the IKEA in an attempt to stop anyone else from being inadvertently trapped inside.
- No one is allowed into the building, with limited exceptions allowed for testing and exploration by the SCP Foundation. However, the Foundation has primarily used drones for testing, rather than human subjects.
- The entrance to the building is monitored at all times.
- SCP-3008 is a Euclid-class anomaly. This means it can be contained, but containment is resource-intensive or unreliable.^{[11]

Can you escape SCP-3008?

Yes, you can escape if you can find an exit—and some people have. It’s nearly impossible to escape from SCP-3008-1 because the exits don’t stay in the same place for long. In fact, they’ve been known to disappear right in front of a person. However, the Foundation reports that approximately 14 people have managed to escape SCP-3008.
- Anyone who escapes is detained by the Foundation Staff. They’re questioned, then given amnestics to erase their memory and a cover story to explain their absence. Anything non-human that escapes is terminated by the Foundation.
- According to Incident 3008-1, one escapee was followed out by an SCP-3008-2 and killed just outside the exit. The Foundation killed the SCP-3008-2. The man, whose name is unknown, dropped a journal where he described his time in a city known as Exchange, which had beds, food, and over 50 people.^{[12]

SCP-3008 is probably so popular because it’s relatable. Cook agrees that SCP-3008 is popular because it is based in reality: using the name IKEA helps with the suspension of disbelief and makes the story easier to believe that it could happen to you. Plus, IKEA stores already have a reputation for feeling endless. The SCP just takes it to the extreme by adding horror and survival elements.^{[13]

Expert Interview} Here are a few other reasons it may be such a popular SCP:
- SCP-3008 is a unique entry in the popular “survival horror” genre. It also has a similar feel to other popular spooky stories, like Minecraft horror, the Backrooms, and creepypastas.
- The story’s unique visuals make it a popular subject for content creators. And since IKEA is a real-life location, it’s pretty memeable.
- A popular Roblox game about SCP-3008 has likely helped boost the story’s popularity. (We’ll talk more about the game in the next section.)
- It’s easy to imagine SCP-3008 actually happening. As Cook notes, people may enjoy it so much because “they think that if they were in this scenario in the future, they would do well having read this document and being able to understand what's happening to them.”^{[14]

In SCP-3008, players build bases to avoid the Staff when night falls. The Roblox game SCP-3008 is extremely popular—it’s had over 3.1 billion visitors since it was introduced, and as of mid-May 2026, it’s still being actively maintained and updated. Players claim a plot, then build a fortress out of nearby furniture and other everyday objects.
- At night, players use their fortress to avoid the Staff. Staff can not be killed, and they do extra damage during events like Blood Nights and Foggy Days.^{[16]

Is SCP-3008 real?

No, all SCPs are works of fiction. SCP is an enormous creative writing project. There have been thousands of SCP stories published to the official SCP wiki—and many more than that have been published to the International SCP Branches. Many of the stories are chilling, and some even seem realistic, but they’re not real.
- The SCP Foundation wiki says on its FAQ page: “We are a creative writing website. The Foundation, its anomalies, and everything else that’s been written about is fictional.”
- A few stories may be based on real legends. For instance, SCP-1000 is based on Bigfoot, and SCP-3000 (“The Eel”) is linked to the Hindu deity Ananta-shesha.
