You're about to find out! We partnered with an anime expert to help us explain voidbending and its canon status in the greater ATLA universe. Is voidbending canon in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Anime expert Jose Rivera says voidbending isn’t canon and doesn't appear in any canon ATLA works. Voidbending comes from the fanon series Avatar: Beyond the Void. It involves bending of a fifth element called void, which sustains life. Voidbenders can also travel through dimensions and reverse an object’s direction.

   Voidbending is an elemental ability invented for a popular ATLA fanfiction series. In a fanfiction series called Avatar: Beyond the Void, voidbenders are described as people with the rare ability to manipulate the fifth element called void. Rivera says that voidbending is control over “nothingness.” He explains, “Most versions describe it as manipulation of the void itself: the space between things, an absence of matter, or an abstract fifth element.”

   • It’s framed as a spiritual or metaphysical discipline: “Many fan takes frame it as operating ‘beyond the elements—manipulating gravity, shadows, or even existence itself, letting users become intangible or attack from a parallel void realm,” says Rivera.
   • It can be considered a “darkness” counterpart to the elements: Rivera continues, “Some fanon variants explicitly fold in shadow or gravity manipulation, positioning voidbending as the dark complement to the light-based spiritual arts already established as canon.”
   • Abilities granted by voidbending: People who practice voidbending may be able to use these abilities:
     • Dimensional travel: Voidbenders can rip holes in the void in the air around them, step through them, and immediately travel to another geographic location. The voidbender must think clearly about their desired destination, otherwise they'll end up in a random place.
     • Temporal reverse: Voidbenders can reverse the travel of living objects that contain void, causing them to move backwards along their previous path.
     • Spacial apparatus: This ability allows voidbenders to manipulate the space and objects around them by bending their void.
     • Woodbending: Wood contains void and is considered a "submissive" plant. Voidbenders have the ability to manipulate it into creative shapes and unnatural movements.

Is voidbending canon in the ATLA universe?

   No, voidbending isn't canon, and void is not a real element in ATLA. Rivera says, “To be direct: voidbending is not canon. It does not appear in Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, the comics, the Kyoshi or Yangchen novels, or any official game tie-in. The Avatar Wiki hosts a Fanon: Voidbending page explicitly labeled as fanon, and that’s the most official acknowledgement it receives anywhere.”

   • Rivera continues, “The concept originates primarily from fan fiction projects like Avatar: Beyond the Void and fanon community pages that imaged it as a lost or hidden fifth elemental art, sometimes called Aetherbending, operating outside the four classical elements.”
   • “From there,” adds Rivera, “it spread across YouTube explainers, fan wikis, and creative writing communities, accumulating enough detail that it can genuinely look like lore to someone encountering it cold.”
   • Because voidbending is entirely fan-constructed, there is no single authoritative version, explains Rivera. "One writer's voidbender controls gravity through shadows. Another's slips between dimensions. A third treats it as spiritual erasure. The concept is a canvas, not a system."

   Fans interpret some story elements as voidbending. Rivera notes, “Part of voidbending’s staying power is that fans have identified a handful of real canon moments that, read generously, brush up against its themes.” He shares the following examples, but cautions that “every piece of canon evidence cited for voidbending is an interpretive leap. The franchise has consistently expanded bending through sub-skills and spiritual techniques, but always as extensions of the four elements or of Energybending, never as a new elemental category.”

   • Zaheer’s flight in The Legend of Korra: “After ‘letting go of all earthly tethers,' Zaheer achieves true levitation. Some fan readings interpret this as him touching ‘the void,’ a state beyond the elements,” says Rivera. But he adds, “Official material classifies it as advanced airbending and spiritual enlightenment, not a new bending type.”
   • Vacuum and airless-void technique: “Extreme airbending feats involving the removal of air from a space get loosely described in fan circles as proto-voidbending. The canon frames these as airbending pushed to its outer limits,” Rivera explains.
   • Avatar Yangchen’s feats in the Chronicles novels: “Yangchen’s ability to generate massive air vacuums appears in The Dawn of Yangchen and related books. Fan communities have used this to argue for a void-adjacent air technique,” says Rivera. He adds, “The books themselves never use that framing. It remains extreme airbending.”

Which characters use voidbending?

   ATLA characters only use voidbending in fan fiction. Since voidbending isn’t canon, no one explicitly uses it in the series. But in fanfic, anything can happen. Notable characters who use voidbending (non-canonically) include:

   • Dasheng is an airbender who bends void in combat the same way he bends air: with circular motions, vacuums, and blow-backs.
   • Han Huang—an earthbender—wields void in heavy strikes, like he would if he were bending earth and rocks.
   • Ithar manipulates his void to implode and make smoke during his attacks, just like he would if he were bending fire. However, Ithar is also flexible and can move fluidly between elemental fighting styles as needed.
   • Avatar Aang temporarily gains the ability to voidbend when he accidentally takes it from Ithar. His goal was actually to restore Ithar's bending power, but his inexperience caused him to bungle the process. Ithar's bending is eventually restored to him.

What is "the void" that Zaheer enters in the Legend of Korra?

1. "The void" describes an empty state of mind, free of emotion and worldly concerns. In the Legend of Korra (the canon sequel series to ATLA), an airbender named Zaheer becomes the second person in history to teach himself how to levitate and unlock the power of flight. His breakthrough comes after reading a poem written by Guru Laghima, a renowned poet and the first air nomad to fly unaided with airbending. The poem reads: "Let go your earthly tether. Enter the void. Empty and become wind." One of Zaheer's "earthly tethers" is his relationship with his girlfriend, Pl'i. But after she's killed in battle, he's finally able to follow Laghima's instructions, enter an emotional void, and fly.

   • Does Zaheer voidbend? Some people mistake Zaheer's ability to fly as voidbending, but it's actually just another type of airbending. "The void" in Laghimi's poem is a state of mind, not a literal place, element, or force of energy.

Does Avatar Yangchen voidbend?

1. No, Yangchen uses airbending to create a vacuum that snuffs out explosions. In the canon Chronicles of the Avatar book series, Avatar Yangchen is an airbender who uses a special technique to extinguish fire and stop explosions. Using her airbending power, she creates a vacuum (which some people call an airless void) that starves the fire of oxygen and causes it to dissipate. She also has the ability to remove all the air from a room and suffocate the people inside. But all these skills are a result of airbending, not voidbending.

Bending is based on four elements and a metaphysical discipline. “The Avatar universe runs on a taxonomy that has stayed stable across two shows, multiple novel cycles, and nearly two decades of expanded canon: four classical elements plus one ancient, metaphysical technique,” says Rivera. “Everything else, the dozens of sub-skills, specialized techniques, and forbidden arts, is an extension of that core, not an addition to it.” The canon bending types are:

   • Waterbending: “Waterbending draws on circular, flowing movements that redirect force rather than absorb it. The element mirrors its practitioners’ relationship with the natural world cycles,” says Rivera.
     • Philosophy: Adaptability, change
     • Sub-skills: Healing, bloodbending, spiritbending
     • Used by: The Northern and Southern Water Tribes, and the Foggy Swamp Tribe
     • What you need to know: Rivera explains, “Waterbending’s sub-skills span the widest moral range of any element, from healing, the most selfless application of bending in the franchise, to bloodbending, which the show treats as a violation of living autonomy. That range is deliberate. Water’s philosophical core is adaptability, and the series uses that to show how the same discipline can be turned toward care or control depending on the bender.”
   • Earthbending: “Earthbending requires a direct, immovable stance: benders wait for the right moment and then commit fully, rather than deflecting,” Rivera says.
     • Philosophy: Stability, endurance, rootedness
     • Sub-skills: Metalbending, Lavabending, seismic sensing, Sandbending
     • Used by: The Earth Kingdom, the Foggy Swamp Tribe, and Republic City's Metalbending police
     • What you need to know: “Earthbending’s sub-skills all share the same underlying logic: find the earth in something and move it,” says Rivera. “Toph’s metalbending works because metal isn’t fully purified. Lavabending works because rock and lava are the same material at different temperatures. The franchise rewards paying attention to the internal consistency of each element’s philosophy; every major sub-skill can be derived from the core.”
   • Firebending: “Post-Ozai philosophy reframes firebending away from aggression and toward the original source: breath, life force, and inner energy. Iroh’s rediscovery of this philosophy is is one of the original series' most important pieces of lore,” Rivera explains.
     • Philosophy: Will, drive, controlled passion
     • Sub-skills: Lightning generation and redirection, combustion bending, blue fire
     • Used by: The Fire Nation and firebending citizens of Republic City
     • What you need to know: “Firebending is the only element whose philosophical origin the franchise explicitly had to correct mid-story,” Rivera says. “The Fire Nation's century of conquest reframed firebending as aggression but the Sun Warriors and the dragons revealed that the element's true source is breath and vitality. Zuko's arc is, at its core, a bender unlearning a corrupted version of his own discipline and finding the real thing.”
   • Airbending: “Airbending flows around force rather than meeting it; it is the most defensive of the four elements in its fundamental approach, emphasizing redirection, agility, and the avoidance of unnecessary confrontation,” says Rivera.
     • Philosophy: Freedom, evasion, non-attachment
     • Sub-skills: Spiritual projection and flight
     • Used by: The Air Nomads historically; new airbenders emerged worldwide after Harmonic Convergence in The Legend of Korra
     • What you need to know: “Airbending's rarest techniques are gated behind spiritual state, not physical training,” Rivera says. “Flight isn't a technique you practice, it's something that becomes available when a bender genuinely lets go of attachment. Zaheer achieving it in grief, at the cost of the person he loved most, is one of Korra's best pieces of writing: the condition for the power is also its tragedy.”
   • Energybending: Rivera tells us that energybending is “the ability to bend life energy (chi) directly, rather than an external element.” He adds that it predates the four classical arts as an ancient, spiritual discipline, and that it’s not tied to a nation or element.
     • First appearance: “The Lion Turtle teaches Aang to bend the energy within a person rather than their body, allowing him to permanently remove Ozai's firebending without killing him,” says Rivera. He adds that this is the moral solution the show had been building toward all season.
     • Korra’s use: “After Amon destroys her ability to bend three elements, Korra accesses energybending instinctively to restore them,” Rivera explains. “She later uses a related technique to re-ignite the Avatar cycle's light in Raava after Vaatu tears them apart.”
     • What you need to know: Rivera says that energybending is the reason voidbending can never quite fill the “fifth element” role fans imagine for it. “The franchise already has its metaphysical bending art,” he says, “and unlike voidbending, energybending is grounded in the show's spiritual logic. It isn't an extra element. It's the substrate everything else is built on: the manipulation of the life force that makes all other bending possible in the first place.”

1. ”The Avatar universe has always invited expansion. Four nations, four elements, and decades of storytelling have produced a world detailed enough that fans don't just consume it, they build inside it,” explains Rivera. “Voidbending is a compelling fan idea precisely because it fills a creative space the show left open.” But, he adds, “that's a feature of good worldbuilding, not proof of a hidden art.”

   • Rivera continues, “Voidbending is one of the most persistent products of that creative impulse: a fan-invented bending art that has its own lore, its own community, and a surface-level plausibility that makes it easy to mistake for something the show actually established. It didn't. But understanding why it resonates, and what the official canon actually says, is a more interesting conversation than just calling it fake and moving on.”
   • “The Avatar universe has spent twenty years adding depth to a system that was already more philosophically coherent than most fantasy worldbuilding,” concludes Rivera. “Every expansion … has followed the same rule: extend the internal logic of an existing element rather than add a new one."
   • "Voidbending is compelling precisely because it breaks that rule in an interesting way, imagining what a discipline that operates outside all four elements might look like," adds Rivera. "The franchise, however, already answered that question with energybending, an art so ancient and so fundamental that it doesn't need an element at all.”
