X-Men ‘97 is a new take on the classic ‘90s animated show X-Men: The Animated Series. Featuring two seasons (so far!), the show brings back some of the most beloved X-Men—and most fearsome villains—of all time. We’re doing a deep dive into the characters of X-Men ‘97, including the main X-Men, the bad guys, the major mutant teams, and important supporting characters, so let’s get started!

Who are the main characters in X-Men ‘97?

The main X-Men in ‘97 are familiar mutants from the X-Men franchise, including Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Jubilee, Rogue, Bishop, Nightcrawler, Beast, Storm, Magneto, and Professor X. Antagonists include Apocalypse, Mister Sinister, Bastion and The Adversary.

   Cyclops (Scott Summers) Scott Summers, or Cyclops, was one of the main characters of the original X-Men animated series. He’s equally at the forefront in X-Men ‘97, helping guide the team in their adventures—and holding them to a moral center.

   Wolverine (Logan) In the world of the X-Men, it doesn’t get much more iconic than Wolverine. In X-Men ‘97, he’s back—yellow and blue suit, mutton-chop sideburns, adamantium claws, and all.

   Jean Grey Jean Grey has famously been at the center of the X-Men’s biggest love triangle, alongside Cyclops and Wolverine. In X-Men ‘97, Jean is married to Scott, and in the opening episodes, she’s apparently expecting the couple’s first child. (Jean was actually kidnapped by Mister Sinister, and the expectant mother is Jean’s clone, Madelyne Pryor.) Jean also learns that she’s an Omega-level mutant—the most powerful type of all.

   Storm (Ororo Munroe) Storm is one of the coolest (and maybe scariest) mutants of all time. She was an iconic member of the original animated series (not to mention that she was famously portrayed by Halle Berry in the movies). In X-Men ‘97, she has to discover who she truly is behind the power.

   Rogue (Anna-Marie Raven) Rogue is one of the most complex mutants in X-Men history, and she’s back for X-Men ‘97. Rogue has struggled with isolation for most of her life thanks to a unique power that causes her to drain the life energy from anyone she touches. She continues to dig into these issues in the new series.

   Beast (Dr. Henry McCoy) At first glance, Beast might look like a, well … a beast. But don’t let the big furry blue guy fool you. He’s actually Dr. Henry McCoy, the level-headed genius who combines problem-solving and strength to support his team.

   Gambit (Remy LeBeau) Gambit might not have shown up in many of the X-Men movies (and his live-action film was canceled before it got started), but he was one of the most popular characters from the original animated series. Fans are happy to see this card-carrying X-Man (see what we did there?) back in action.

   Jubilee (Jubilation Lee) In the original X-Men animated series, Jubilee was a newcomer to Xavier’s school, and we got to meet the mutants along with her. In X-Men ‘97, she’s a more experienced member of the team—but don’t worry, she still has the same fun spirit.

   Morph Morph had a pretty tumultuous run in the original X-Men animated series—he was originally a close friend of Wolverine’s, but he was killed off in an early episode, only to be resurrected later on. In X-Men ‘97, the shapeshifter returns to the fold, bringing his unique humor and energy to the team.

    Bishop (Lucas Bishop) Bishop is a time-traveling mutant who first appeared in the original X-Men animated series. Originally, his goal was to stop the Sentinels and save Charles Xavier. In X-Men ‘97, he helps rescue Madelyne and Scott’s baby Nathan by taking him into the future.

    Nightcrawler Nightcrawler is the blue-skinned, long-tailed son of Mystique, and in the original animated series, he believed his mother was killed by the Friends of Humanity. We have a feeling the pair will be reuniting soon.

    Cable (Nathan Summers) Cable is the son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Pryor, the clone who replaced Jean Grey at the beginning of Season 1. Madelyne and Scott chose to send their infant son, Nathan, into the future with Bishop in order to protect him from a fatal virus engineered by Mister Sinister. Nathan grows up in the future, becoming the time-traveling mutant known as Cable.

    Forge Forge is a Native American mutant with a unique ability—he’s an incredibly skilled inventor, and he can create almost anything that he can imagine. He meets Storm at a bar in Texas, introducing himself as a friend of Professor Xavier’s and promising her that he can help her get her powers back.

    Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr) You might know him as a villain, but at the end of the original X-Men animated series, Magneto chose to abandon his war against humans in favor of helping Charles Xavier. When X-Men ‘97 picks up, Magneto is acting as the leader of the X-Men—adding even more depth to this already-complex character. But will he actually turn away from villainy for good?

   Apocalypse According to the comics, Apocalypse was one of the earliest known mutants, abandoned at birth in Ancient Egypt. He’s the main villain in X-Men ‘97—the mutants must stop him from taking over the world, but that isn’t easy since he has a device that lets him turn mutants into Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

   Mr. Sinister (Nathaniel Essex) Mr. Sinister first appeared in the original X-Men animated series. He started life as a scientist in the Victorian Era and was a colleague of James Xavier, one of the ancestors of Professor X. In X-Men ‘97, he’s back and hoping to create a new world order.

   Bastion Bastion is one of the major antagonists of X-Men ‘97. His whole goal is to eradicate mutants, and he’s recruited other villains—including Dr. Bolivar Trask and Henry Gyrich—to work for him.

   The Adversary The Adversary is a powerful demon who was brought to Earth by Forge. He’s a master manipulator, able to insert thoughts into people’s minds as he tries to achieve his goal of taking over the world. His face-off with Storm is one of the most intense storylines of the season.

   Goblin Queen (Madelyne Pryor) Madelyne is Jean Grey’s clone, but at first, she believes that she is the real Jean. She initially allies herself with the X-Men, but once she learns the truth about her identity, she struggles with her place. Under Mr. Sinister’s influence, she becomes the Goblin Queen—although she ultimately gets a chance to redeem herself.

   X-Factor X-Factor is a government-backed group of mutants. It was assembled by Val Cooper, a National Security Advisor who oversees mutant affairs. After Val departed, leadership went to Cyclops’ brother Havok. Members of X-Factor include:

   • Havok (Alex Summers): Has the ability to create blasts of plasma; leads the team
   • Polaris (Lorna Dane): The daughter of Magneto; Polaris shares her father’s magnetic powers.
   • Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair): A werewolf-like mutant from Scotland
   • Strong Guy (Guido Carosella): A tanky mutant who can absorb kinetic energy
   • Multiple Man (Jamie Madrox): Creates clones of himself
   • Siryn (Theresa Rourke Cassidy): Attacks with a sonic siren scream
   • Forge: Temporarily took over as leader after Cooper

   X-Force X-Force is headed by Cable, the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Prior, a clone of Jean Grey. He created X-Force to try to stop the rise of Apocalypse. This crew of mutants is a highly organized tactical team that’s run more like a military operation. The X-Force includes:

   • Archangel (Warren Worthington III): The mutant formerly known as Angel; he was transformed by Apocalypse before being rescued by Rogue
   • Jubilee: Jubilee is all action in her role on the X-Force
   • Sunspot (Roberto da Costa): A teen mutant who can absorb solar energy and convert into power (like energy blasts, enhanced strength, or the ability to fly)
   • Psylocke (Betsy Braddock): A psychic ninja and the sister of Captain Britain

   The Inner Circle The Inner Circle (called the Hellfire Club in the comics) is a secret society of elite humans and mutants. They use their power to influence the world’s politics and economy to suit their needs. The most notable members are:

   • White Queen (Emma Frost): A telepath with diamond-like skin who leads the Inner Circle; she later served on the Interim Council of Genosha
   • Black King (Sebastian Shaw): A mutant who can absorb kinetic energy; briefly served as the chairman of the Inner Circle
   • Mastermind (Jason Wyngarde): A telepathic mutant with the power to create illusions

   The Morlocks The Morlocks are a rogue group of mutants who have been cast out of society. They’re led by Callisto, the eyepatch-wearing, spiky-haired mutant who’ll do anything to protect her crew. Other Morlock members include:

   • Sunspot: Originally one of the New Mutants, Sunspot is a new addition to the X-Men. His super-speed ability is powered by the sun.
   • Lilandra Neramani: Lilandra is the Empress of the Shi’ar Empire; she’s historically been a friend to the X-Men.
   • Captain America: He’s not a mutant, but Captain America has appeared in both X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ‘97!
   • Dr. Bolivar Trask: Dr. Bolivar Trask has appeared in both X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ‘97; he is the creator of the Sentinels.
   • Henry Gyrich: Fans of the original X-Men animated series will recognize antagonist Henry Gyrich—and he’s no less of a villain than he was back then.
   • Rama-Tut: A time-traveling pharaoh from Ancient Egypt.
   • Patricia “Trish” Trilby: A news reporter who often reports on mutants
   • President Robert Kelly: The President of the US; tries to maintain peace between humans and mutants
   • Exodus (Bennet du Paris): An immortal Omega-level mutant who was born in the 12th Century
   • X-Cutioner: A former FBI agent who wants to get rid of all mutants
