  1. Though Hisoka was only briefly a member of the Phantom Troupe, he ended up being the most powerful. During his actual time in the Troupe, we’d say Chrollo Lucilfer was more powerful, as Chrollo actually killed Hisoka. However, Hisoka then came back to life and awakened his Post Mortem Nen, making him even more powerful than when he was alive.[1] In canon, Hisoka replaced an unknown Phantom Troupe member as No. 4, but if we follow the events of the non-canon movie Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge, he replaced Omokage after his death.
    • Status: Defected
    • Number: No. 4
    • Nen Type: Transmutation
    • Hatsu: Bungee Gum

  2. Other than Hisoka, the Phantom Troupe’s leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, is the most powerful member (and Hisoka even praised his skillset). Hill explains that he’s literally seen as the “head” of the spider, while the other members are the “legs.”[2] He’s the brains behind the operation, and as if he wasn’t powerful enough already, his Skill Hunter Hatsu grants him the ability to steal other Nen abilities. The rest of the Phantom Troupe is incredibly loyal to him, as well, making him a tricky opponent to face.[3]

    • Number: No. 0
    • Nen Type: Specialism
    • Hatsu: Skill Hunter

  3. Hill says Illumi is another member of the Phantom Troupe.[4] Even Hisoka has acknowledged Illumi’s talents. Illumi is an elite assassin whose position as the eldest son of the Zoldyk family already makes him intimidating. He’s also a master Manipulator who can control masses of both living and dead people. It’s no surprise he’s one of the most powerful Phantom Troupe members.[5] Illumi replaced the former No. 11, Uvogin, after he died.
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 11
    • Nen Type: Manipulation
    • Hatsu: Body Manipulation, Needle People, Corpse Control, Hypnotic Spell
  4. Uvogin was another member of the Phantom Troupe, says Hill.[6] Uvogin was the definition of physical power. As an Enhancer, he used his abilities to make himself even stronger, making him almost impossible to beat in a fight. He had incredible stamina, endurance, speed, and agility as well. His Hatsu, Meteor Impact, was supposedly a punch that is as powerful as a missile.[7] After Uvogin died, Illumi replaced him as No. 11.
  5. Hill names Feitan Portor as another of the Phantom Troupe.[9] Feitan acts as the Phantom Troupe’s interrogator… a.k.a., their torturer. He also filled in as the leader when Chrollo was away. He may not be as physically strong as some of the other members, but he’s incredibly fast and, as a Transmuter, can transform Nen into another type of energy. He’s not someone you want to mess with.[10]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 2
    • Nen Type: Transmutation
    • Hatsu: Pain Packer, Rising Sun
  6. Phinks is another important member of the group, says Hill.[11] Physically, Phinks is one of the strongest members of the Phantom Troupe. He’s a short-tempered, brash man who constantly gets into fights with his team. His Ripper Cyclotron Hatsu allows him to increase his power by spinning his arm. However, he hasn’t had much of a chance to really show off his abilities.[12]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 5
    • Nen Type: Enhancement
    • Hatsu: Ripper Cyclotron
  7. Hill names Bonolenov as one of the members of the Phantom Troupe.[13] He has one of the most unique appearances of all the Phantom Troupe members; he’s wrapped head to toe in bandages because, as a member of the extinct Gyodondond tribe, he’s poked holes all over his body to create music. He has several abilities that make him a powerful member: he can conjure spears and armor, morph into another person, and even cause a planet to fall from the sky to crush his opponents.[14]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 10
    • Nen Type: Conjuration
    • Hatsu: Battle Cantabile
  8. Nobunaga Hazama is another essential member of the Phantom Troupe, says Hill.[15] Nobunaga is a highly skilled swordsman who can slash through his opponents before they know what hit them. But here’s the thing: Nobunaga has kept his Hatsu a secret, so no one really knows what exactly he’s capable of. While that makes him difficult to rank, he’s also extremely intelligent and easily figures out his opponents’ ability types, which makes him a valuable Phantom Troupe member.[16]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 1
    • Nen Type: Enhancement
    • Hatsu: Unknown
  9. Hill includes Machi Komacine on his list of Phantom Troupe members.[17] Machi is cold, calculating, and intuitive, which makes her dangerous in her own right. While she’s not shown to be very powerful, it’s often implied that she’s stronger than she appears. Her Hatsu, Nen Threads, also allows her to stitch wounds, which makes her a valuable member of the team.[18]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 3
    • Nen Type: Transmutation
    • Hatsu: Nen Threads
  10. Omokage only appears in a single movie, but he’s still a powerful member worth mentioning. He has a pretty sinister backstory—he was so obsessed with puppets that he killed his own sister and turned her into a living puppet forced to follow his commands. He could also create puppets from memories. However, Omokage’s superiority complex was ultimately his downfall.[19] Omokage was likely replaced by Hisoka as No. 4 when he died.
    • Status: Deceased
    • Number: No. 4
    • Nen Type: Specialism
    • Hatsu: Soul Doll
    • Note: Omokage is considered a non-canon member of the Phantom Troupe because his character was created for the movie Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge. He did not appear in the original manga.
  11. Hill also includes Franklin Bordeau as a member of the Phantom Troupe.[20] Franklin is a large man who resembles Frankenstein’s monster. Based on his appearance, you’d think he’d be a close-range fighter, but his Hatsu, Double Machine Gun, makes him an excellent shooter. He can shoot bullets from his fingers and kill dozens of opponents in seconds.[21]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 7
    • Nen Type: Emission
    • Hatsu: Double Machine Gun
  12. Shalnark is another member of the Phantom Troupe, says Hill.[22] Shalnark’s Manipulation Hatsu, Black Voice, allowed him to control anyone he attached his antennae to, which made him a pretty tough opponent. He also had the Autopilot Hatsu, which allows him to put out an incredible amount of Aura. If he took too long, though, he could use all his life energy and die. He was a cheerful member of the Troupe who was eventually killed by Hisoka.[23]
    • Status: Deceased
    • Number: No. 6
    • Nen Type: Manipulation
    • Hatsu: Black Voice, Autopilot
  13. Hill explains that Kalluto Zoldyk is another member of the team.[24] Kalluto may be the least experienced member of the Phantom Troupe, but he’s an incredibly skilled fighter. His Hatsu, Dance of the Serpent’s Bite, allows him to use a paper fan as a weapon capable of cutting through steel. Kalluto is quiet and obedient, and because of his feminine appearance, he’s often mistaken for a girl.[25] Kalluto replaced Hisoka as No. 4 after Hisoka defected.
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 4
    • Nen Type: Manipulation
    • Hatsu: Dance of the Serpent’s Bite
  14. Shizuku Murasaki is another person Hill includes on the list of Phantom Troupe members.[26] Don’t let her glasses and quiet personality fool you—Shizuku Murasaki is far from innocent. Like the rest of the Phantom Troupe, she’s a cold, ruthless killer. What makes Shizuku unique is that her Nen type allows her to conjure a vacuum named Blinky, which can inhale any non-living objects.[27]
    • Status: Active
    • Number: No. 8
    • Nen Type: Conjuration
    • Hatsu: Blinky

  15. Hill says Pakunoda is another member of the Phantom Troupe.[28] Pakunoda may not have had the best offensive abilities, but she made up for it with her Hatsu. Just by touching someone, she could read their memories, making her a key asset for gathering intel and blackmailing people. She was also good with guns (she could shoot 6 targets within a second), so she was far from defenseless. Pakunoda was a tall woman with short blonde hair. She was cold-blooded and ruthless, but entirely loyal to Chrollo.[29]
    • Status: Deceased
    • Number: No. 9
    • Nen Type: Specialism
    • Hatsu: Psychometry, Memory Bomb
  16. Kortopi is another member of the Phantom Troupe, says Hill.[30] He wasn't a fighter, so based on physical strength alone, he’s the weakest Phantom Troupe member. However, he was far from useless. His Hatsu, Gallery Fake, allowed him to make exact copies of objects, proving he had a large amount of Aura. Kortopi was short with long grey hair obscuring his face, and he was especially loyal to Chrollo.[31]
    • Status: Deceased
    • Number: No. 12
    • Nen Type: Conjuration
    • Hatsu: Gallery Fake

What is the Phantom Troupe?

PDF download Download Article
  1. They’re the main antagonists in Hunter x Hunter and Kurapika’s arch-nemeses, as they killed his entire clan before the events of the series. The Phantom Troupe consists of 13 members who are powerful Nen users. Hill says that each member has the group’s symbol, a spider, tattooed somewhere on their body, along with their corresponding number.[32]
    • Chrollo Lucilfer founded the Phantom Troupe. The original members were Chrollo, Nobunaga, Feitan, Machi, Phinks, Shalnark, Franklin, Pakunoda, and Uvogin. The other members joined later.
    • Members are assigned different roles depending on what they’re best at. For example, Chrollo serves as the boss, while Feitan serves as the interrogator.
    • Fights are prohibited between members, and no members outrank each other. Therefore, disputes are settled with a coin toss.
    • All members are replaceable, including the leader.
