The Espada in Bleach are an elite group of fighters with powerful abilities. Serving under Sousuke Aizen, the Espada are some of the strongest villains in the entire series. We interviewed an anime expert to help us break down exactly who the Espada are, plus a complete list of every Espada in Bleach, including their special abilities and what aspect of death they represent.

The Espada Characters in Bleach

Anime expert Richard Moore says the Espada are Aizen’s 10 strongest Arrancar who serve as the antagonists during the Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arcs. The Espada characters are:

Who are the Espada in Bleach?

   The Espada are the strongest of the Arrancar. The Arrancar are former Hollows. They were given Shinigami powers by Sousuke Aizen via his Hōgyoku ability. Anime and manga expert Cedric Han says that the Espada are Aizen’s ten strongest Arrancar. Moore says they serve as the antagonistic force during the Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arcs, he adds.

   • The Espada all have a Resurreccion ability. Arrancar (including the Espada) carry swords known as Zanpakuto. Each Zanpakuto has a special ability sealed inside. The Arrancar can then unseal (or release) this power through a transformation known as a Resurreccion.
   • The original Espada were naturally-occurring. There was a group of Espada already in place before Aizen used Hōgyoku to create new ones. These became the Privaron Espada.
   • Espada’s numbers correspond to their rank. The Espada are ranked primarily by their spiritual power, explains Moore. The lower the number, the more powerful they are. Each Espada member has a tattoo that matches their assigned number.
   • Every Espada represents an aspect of death, says Moore. They embody this aspect through their personality and method of combat. For instance, Barragan’s aspect is Old Age, and he can age anything he touches.

   Yammy Llargo: Espada Cero / Diez (#0 / #10) As far as the strongest Espada, Yammy is technically the highest ranked as Espada #0, says Moore. Yammy started off as the lowest-ranked Espada, at Number 10, though. He’s extremely powerful in battle, but he’s a reckless fighter, and not that bright. That said, he has the unique ability to gather Reiryoku (magical energy) by eating and sleeping. He uses this energy to evolve, at which point he’s promoted to Espada #0.

   • Aspect of death: Rage
   • Zanpakuto—Ira: Gains 8 legs and a dinosaur tail; his rage increases his energy and strength with no limit; can heal from injury

   Coyote Starrk/Lilynette Gingerbuck: Espada Primera (#1) Coyote Starrk stands out as one of the strongest Espada, notes Moore. Coyote holds the rank of Espada #1, along with his companion Lilynette Gingerbuck, who is actually the other half of Coyote’s soul. Coyote is laid-back—bordering on lazy—but in battle, he’s incredibly fast, skilled with both swords and pistols.

   • Zanpakuto—Los Lobos: Takes on the form of a gunslinger; can fire energy bullets, wield spiritual blades, and summon a pack of spirit wolves to chase down enemies

   Barragan Louisenbairn: Espada Segunda (#2) Barragan Louisenbairn is another one of the strongest Espada, says Moore. He looks like a skeleton wearing a crown and is the former God-King of Hueco Mundo. Barragan joined the Espada after he was dethroned by Aizen. He has the ability to create an energy field that slows time and ages anyone who’s trapped inside.

   • Zanpakuto—Arrogante: Takes on the form of a Grim Reaper; quickly ages or rots anything around him

   Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck: Espada Tres (#3) Nelliel was a member of the Espada, but she reverted to a child-like state after being attacked by two of her fellow Espada members, including her former friend Nnoitra. Nelliel’s cool, rational approach to fighting and loyal friendship set her apart from most of the Espada—not to mention that she can turn herself into a centaur.

   • Aspect of death: Sacrifice
   • Zanpakuto—Gamuza: Her sword glows and releases a hazy smoke and turns into a double-sided lance, which builds up spiritual energy and travels to opponents at extreme speed.

   Tier Harribel: Espada Tres (#3) Tier Harribel might be the noblest of the Espada. Aizen recruited her to replace Nelliel after she was attacked. Tier is relatively calm, but also very powerful—and she’s an expert swordsman. After Aizen was defeated, she returned to help lead Hueco Mundo.

   • Aspect of death: Sacrifice
   • Zanpakuto—Tiburon: Her sword transforms into a large shark’s tooth; gains the ability to manipulate water.

   Ulquiorra Cifer: Espada Cuatro (#4) Ulquiorra Cifer definitely stands out from the rest of the Espada, but Moore says he’s hard to rank. While he’s officially ranked at #4, he might just be the strongest out of all of the Espada. Initially a Hollow, Ulquiorra has retained a detached, depressed air as an Espada—but he’s deeply loyal to Aizen. Ulquiorra is fast, nimble, and excellent with a sword. He’s the only Espada who has a second-stage Resurreccion.

   • According to Moore, Ulquiorra is hard to rank due to his Segunda Etapa, which makes his true strength harder to compare to the others. This refers to an Arrancar’s secondary evolution, which only Ulquiorra has achieved. It increases his strength and abilities.

   • Aspect of death: Nihility
   • Zanpakuto—Murcielago: Stage 1: Develops bat wings and a Hollow mask, gains increased speed and power; Stage 2: Develops a demon-like form and increased spiritual pressure, can use an energy javelin

   Nnoitra Gilga: Espada Quinto (#5) Nnoitra Gilga might be the most vicious of all of the Espada. He was originally ranked #8, but was promoted to #5 after he became more skilled at killing Hollows. He’s single-mindedly focused on becoming the most powerful Espada, which led him to attack Nelliel, with Szayelaporro’s help.

   • Zanpakuto—Santa Teresa: Develops horns and an extra pair of arms; can generate scythes and regenerate limbs

   Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez: Espada Sexta (#6) Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez takes the form of Destruction. He’s impulsive and hot-tempered, but he also believes in a fair fight. He’s equally skilled in physical fighting and the use of his Zankpakuto, Pantera, and he has a personal vendetta against Ichigo.

   • Zanpakuto—Pantera: Takes on a panther-like form, attacks become faster and more powerful, can create shock waves and claws made of energy, gains the ability to shoot claw bombs from his elbows

   Zommari Rureaux: Espada Septima (#7) Zommari is super-chill, choosing meditation over madness (unless he’s facing a Shinigami). He’s extremely fast, and he can create copies of himself to trick his enemies in battle. He might have become one of the strongest Espada if he’d lived long enough to prove himself—but he met his match before he got the chance.

   • Zanpakuto—Brujeria: Develops an eye-covered, pumpkin-like shell over the lower half of his body; each eye is able to control an object, like a person’s limb.

    Szayelaporro Granz: Espada Octava (#8) Szayelaporro is swaggering, cocky, smart—and oh yeah, a sadistic scientist who experiments on people. He’s the brains behind most of the spiritual weapons used by the Espada, and he’s a master at controlling his Zanpakuto. He also uses insects to spy on his enemies to give him a strategic edge in battle. This dude’s scary.

    • Zanpakuto—Fornicaras: Fingertips become elongated and purple, develops branches that emerge from his back; produces a black liquid that turns into a clone of his enemy, can create voodoo dolls; has the power of resurrection

    Aaroniero Arruruerie: Espada Noveno (#9) Aaroniero Arruruerie is fairly weak on his own, but he can absorb the powers of dead Hollows and Arrancars. He can also manifest the forms and powers of any of the 30,000 beings he’s absorbed. Most notably, he used the form of Kaien Shiba while fighting Rukia in battle, hoping to throw her off her game—but ultimately, his confidence got the best of him.

Who is the strongest Espada in Bleach?

   There’s no real consensus on which Espada is the strongest. Although the numbers of the Espada members are supposed to correspond to their rank (and supposedly their strength), fans disagree about who’s the strongest. You’ll find plenty of lists that rank the Espada by strength, and you can definitely make a stronger case for some members of the Espada than others. Here are our picks for the strongest Espada members:

   • Ulquiorra Cifer: Ulquiorra’s two-stage Zanpakato release is incredibly powerful, giving him an undisputed edge over the other Espada. He lands at or near #1 on many ranked lists.
   • Coyote Starrk: Coyote might seem like he doesn’t care about fighting, but once he’s in battle, he’s an absolute beast.
   • Barragan Louisenbairn: Barragan’s ability to disintegrate anything around him makes him a formidable foe.
   • Yammy Llargo: Yammy didn’t start out very strong, but once he reached full strength, he was assigned the number zero—indicating that he was stronger than the other Espada.

What are the Privaron Espada?

   The Privaron Espada are demoted Espada members. There were already Espada in place before Aizen used his Hōgyoku power to create new ones. Because his artificially-created Espada were stronger than the old ones, Aizen demoted these Espada members, giving them three-digit numbers and sending them to live in Tres Cifras. The known Privaron Espada include:

   • Dordoni Alessandro Del Socaccio: 103rd Rank; Zanpakuto—Giralda
   • Cirucci Sanderwicci: 105th Rank; Zanpakuto—Golondrina
   • Gantenbainne Mosqueda: 107th Rank; Zanpakuto—Dragra
