Bankai in Bleach, Explained

Anime & manga expert Mel Mascarenhas says a Bankai is the final and strongest form of a Soul Reaper’s Zanpakuto sword. It releases new abilities that are significantly stronger than a sword’s Shikai form. The strongest Bankai include Ichibe’s Shirafude Ichimonji, Yamamoto’s Zanka no Tachi, and Ichigo’s Tensa Zangetsu.

   A Bankai is the strongest form of a Soul Reaper’s Zanpakuto weapon. Mascarenhas explains that in Bleach, all Soul Reapers (also known as Shinigami) carry around swords called Zanpakuto. The swords manifest specific abilities and characteristics depending on the form they’re in, with Bankai being the strongest state where they exhibit very specific powers.

   • A Soul Reaper’s Zanpakuto is a bit complex: the weapon is unique to each person and a part of their soul, while also housing its own distinct spirit (with its own unique name) that’s tied to the Reaper’s soul. The spirit imbues the Zanpakuto with powers based on the Reaper’s personality, abilities, skills, and goals.
   • A Soul Reaper’s Bankai has its own name, which is usually based on the Zanpakuto’s name.
   • A Zanpukato has 3 total forms: its sealed form, where it typically looks like a regular sword; its Shikai form, where it releases some powers and abilities, and typically changes appearance; and finally its Bankai form, where it releases its most powerful abilities.

How does a Bankai work?

   A Bankai gives a Soul Reaper’s Zanpakuto more power and abilities. A Bankai is basically the Zanpakuto’s final upgrade or evolution. It’s 5x to 10x more powerful than the Soul Reaper’s Shikai and allows the Reaper to use new, stronger, and unique abilities. For example, if a Reaper has a kido-type Zanpakuto that channels a specific power, like controlling fire, they’ll gain access to stronger flames and advanced techniques.

   • If the Reaper has a melee-type Zanpakuto, which is based on the weapon’s physical strength, their Zanpakuto will get upgrades that make it stronger in combat, like additional blades.
   • Activating their Bankai requires a Soul Reaper to exert their Reiatsu, or energy, and if they run out, they can no longer use it until they recover.
   • Mascarenhas notes that when a Reaper releases their Bankai, their Zanpakuto typically changes its shape and appearance, and the Reaper often changes their look, too.
   • For example, Mascarenhas says when Rukia Kuchiki releases her Bankai, her sword becomes ice, and Rukia herself turns into a “princess of ice”—she turns all white and exudes coldness.

How does a Soul Reaper get a Bankai?

   A Soul Reaper has to bring their Zanpukato spirit into the physical world. Once a Soul Reaper releases their Zanpukato’s Shikai form (which requires discovering their Zanpukato spirit’s name and learning how to communicate with it), they must learn how to materialize the Zanpukato spirit into the physical world and subjugate it to get their Bankai. This typically takes at least 10 years to complete, not to mention the time needed to master the actual Bankai. So, only the strongest Reapers are capable of releasing their Zanpukato’s Bankai.

   • Subjugating the Reaper’s Zanpukato spirit can look a lot of different ways, which is usually unique for each Reaper. For example, Ichigo fights with his spirit to conquer it.
   • There’s no specific sequence that a Soul Reaper has to follow to release their Bankai (which is unlike Shikai, where the Reaper has to say a specific incantation and then their Shikai’s name).
   • However, most Reapers say “Bankai” followed by the Bankai’s name when they activate it, as this makes its powers stronger.
   • The Soul Reaper does have to know the Bankai’s name to use it and achieve its full power, though. They just don’t have to say it out loud to activate it.
   • Sometimes, a Zanpukato gives their Reaper a fake Bankai name, which could be because they aren’t fully harmonized with their Reaper or they don’t believe they’re worthy yet. This results in a weaker Bankai release.

Why are Bankai such great weapons?

   Bankai are extremely strong and get more powerful with experience. As the final upgrade of a Soul Reaper’s Zanpakuto, a Bankai is their strongest weapon. It’s significantly more powerful than a Shikai and much harder to block, making it very difficult for opponents to go up against it. A Reaper’s Bankai is also something they can develop and make stronger as they physically train, do inner work to understand and accept themselves, and grow more in tune with their Zanpakuto spirit.

   • Plus, only the strongest Soul Reapers (usually captain-level) can activate and use Bankai, which just makes them an even more formidable weapon.

   Shirafude Ichimonji (User: Ichibe Hyosube) According to anime expert Preston Hargrove, Ichibe has a “broken” Bankai, making it one of the strongest. His Bankai allows him to rewrite concepts of identity and existence. For example, Hargrove says Ichibe renamed one of the biggest villains in Bleach, Yhwach, “Black Ant.” And because Yhwach was named “Black Ant,” his strength literally became that of an ant. So, Ichibe can basically rewrite anything he wants and make someone become anything he wants—as Hargrove says, he’s overpowered based on the fact that he can make anything exist just by writing it.

   Zanka no Tachi (User: Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto) Yamamoto, the head captain of the Gotei 13, has one of the strongest Bankai in Bleach, says Hargrove. His Bankai is comparable to the heat of the sun: Yamamoto condenses the sun’s heat into his blade, and when he taps it on the ground, everything blows up into oblivion. That’s not his only move, though. Hargrove says Yamamoto has 4 Bankai techniques, each more powerful than the next. Essentially, Yamamoto is “overpowered to no degree,” says Hargrove.

   Tensa Zangetsu (User: Ichigo Kurosaki) Ichigo’s Bankai is a bit complex, as he didn’t get his true Bankai until The Thousand Year Blood War arc, explains Mascarenhas. Once Ichigo learns his true nature—that he’s part human, part Hollow, and part Quincy—and understands it, his Zanpakuto manifests as 2 different swords. And when he releases his Bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, the 2 swords forge into 1. It allows Ichigo to fire powerful energy blasts.

   • Hargrove notes that part of the reason why Ichigo’s Bankai is so strong is that it combines his Hollow, Quincy, and Soul Reaper powers.
   • Zanpakuto name: Zangetsu (Anime expert Richard Moore notes that it’s one of the most iconic weapons in anime!)
   • Zanpakuto type: Melee, with energy-blast abilities
   • Bankai appearance: Large, curved silver sword with a smaller black sword in the center
   • Bankai debut: Manga chapter 678 (true Bankai not in the anime yet); Episode 58 (incomplete Bankai)
   • Strongest technique: Getsuga Tensho (fires golden energy blasts)
   • Note: Hargrove says Ichigo’s true Bankai ability hasn’t been revealed yet. Bleach’s creator, Kubo, is allegedly keeping the abilities vague so fans can come up with their own theories (which they’re definitely doing!).

   Shatatsu Karagara Shigarami no Tsuji (User: Senjumaru Shutara) Senjumaru is a royal guard who possesses a literal reality-shaking Bankai. When she releases Shatatsu Karagara Shigarami no Tsuji, the area around Senjumaru grows dark, and she manifests a giant loom and large red tapestries. Senjumaru then uses her weaving skills to create realities that can trap and torture several opponents at a time.

   • For example, Senjumaru can weave a tapestry that traps her opponent in an environment where they’re sucked into a sand pit.

   • Zanpakuto type: Kido (weaving and reality-shaping powers)
   • Bankai appearance: Needle; Also manifests as a giant loom

   Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame (User: Kisuke Urahara) As a former captain, you bet Urahara has a very strong Bankai. When he releases Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame, he’s able to restructure anything. He can split something open and then sew it back together, changing its entire structure. This has near limitless uses, like when Urahara heals his own eye and strengthens his own arm.

   Daiguren Hyorinmaru (User: Toshiro Hitsugaya) According to Mascarenhas, Toshiro has a really cool ice-type Bankai. When he releases Daiguren Hyorinmaru, he develops ice wings and can age himself up, which makes him a lot stronger. His ice powers also get a huge boost, and he can easily freeze entire objects with a wave of his hand, and even freeze abilities. He notably has the strongest ice-type Zanpakuto in the series.

   Katen Kyokotsu: Karamatsu Shinju (User: Shunsui Kyoraku) The Captain-Commander of Gotei 13 has one of the most unique and powerful Bankai. When he releases Katen Kyokotsu: Karamatsu Shinju, he transforms a large area around him into a tragic theater play. His opponent is forced to go through 4 “Acts” where they’re injured and ultimately, decapitated.

   • Zanpakuto type: Kido (reality-shaping powers)
   • Bankai appearance: 2 swords
   • Bankai debut: Episode 401
   • Strongest technique: 4-Act play consisting of Ichidanme: Tameraikizu no Wakachiai (Shunsui and his opponent share wounds), Nidanme: Zanki no Shitone (the opponent bleeds profusely), Sandanme: Dangyo no Fuchi (Shunsui and his opponent are enveloped in water until one runs out of energy), and Shime no Dan: Itokiribasami Chizome no Nodobue (the opponent is decapitated)

   Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari (User: Shinji Hirako) Shinji is another accomplished Gotei 13 captain whose Bankai, Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari, alters his opponents' perception so they believe their allies are their enemies. Shinji is cocooned inside a flower that keeps him safe while his enemies take themselves out for him.

   • Bankai appearance: Sword with a circle on the tip of its blade and hilt

   Kenpachi’s Unnamed Bankai (User: Kenpachi Zaraki) While the Gotei 13 Captain certainly has a strong Bankai, we still don’t know its official name. What we do know is that when Kenpachi releases it, he goes on a mindless rampage, gains a huge boost in strength, and is able to cut through anything. Plus, he grows horns and his skin turns red.

    Konjiki Ashisogi Jizo (User: Mayuri Kurotsuchi) Mascarenhas says Mayuri is another character with an amazing Bankai. Mayuri is a mad scientist (and captain) who manufactures his Bankai and makes it do all kinds of crazy stuff. His Bankai produces a giant centipede baby that exudes poison and antidotes. Combined with Mayuri’s ability to experiment on his Bankai, he’s very powerful.

    • Bankai appearance: Sword with a spiky blade; Also manifests a giant caterpillar with a baby’s head

    Kamishini no Yari (User: Gin Ichimaru) Gin is a former captain turned quasi-villain who has a formidable Bankai. Kamishini no Yari builds upon his Shikai, which causes his weapon to extend at super-fast speeds. This allows Gin to slice through opponents (and entire cities) at great distances without them knowing what hit them. He can also turn the blade into dust and inject it into his opponents without them knowing. When he activates the dust (at any time of his choosing), it breaks down his opponent’s cells.

    Soo Zabimaru (User: Renji Abarai) Renji is a lieutenant in Gotei 13, who didn’t get his true Bankai until The Thousand Year Blood War arc. Activating his Bankai manifests a snake-shaped gauntlet on his right arm that’s attached to a long blade, which he can control. Renji also develops fur-like shoulder armor on his left arm that can block attacks. His Bankai has several powerful techniques, including using it as a whip to generate explosive energy.

    Senbonzakura Kageyoshi (User: Byakuya Kuchiki) Mascarenhas notes that Byakuya has a very prominent Bankai, which is fairly popular among fans. When he activates his Bankai, his sword disappears and turns into cherry blossom blades that Byakuya can control with his will. He can control over a hundred million blades at a time, using them to attack and to defend himself.

    Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Korogi (User: Kaname Tosen) Tosen is another villain and follower of Aizen who boasts a powerful Bankai. Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Korogi creates a black void around Tosen, which removes the senses of everyone trapped inside, except touch. This makes it easy for Tosen to knock out enemies without them knowing what’s coming to them.
