   Ichigo Kurosaki Ichigo Kurosaki is also known as “The One Who Protects.” He’s the main protagonist of Bleach—which is why Richard says he’s one of the most notable characters in the series. He’s the son of a Shinigami father and a Quincy mother, giving him a unique blend of powers—including the ability to see ghosts. Ichigo also receives powers from Rukia when they first meet, although these take a long time to fully develop. Ichigo is dedicated and loyal, and he spends the series fighting to protect the people around him.

   Rukia Kuchiki Rukia is the first Soul Reaper we meet in Bleach. She accidentally gives Ichigo all of her powers when she first meets him, so he can help her fight a Hollow. Even without powers, she’s a powerful member of the team—and even more so when she eventually gets her powers back. And she’s one of the most iconic characters in the series, says Richard.

   Uryu Ishida Uryu Ishida is a Quincy, and although Quincies and Soul Reapers typically don’t get along, Uryu becomes close friends with Ichigo. Uryu is skilled with a bow, and he’s a man of style, often sewing his own outfits to suit his unique, flashy style. He’s also known for being a masterful tactician, often strategically helping to shift the dynamic of a battle.

   Orihime Inoue Richard adds that Orihime is another of the most popular characters in Bleach. At the start of the series, Orihime is a student at Karakura High School and a friend of Ichigo’s. She had a difficult childhood, although she was ultimately rescued by her older brother Sora. She uses her Shun Shun Rikka powers to fight beside Ichigo. She falls in love with Ichigo, and the two are eventually married and have a son together.

   Yasutora “Chad” Sado Yasutora “Chad” Sado became best friends with Ichigo when the two were in middle school together. Chad is Mexican but was born in Japan, and he’s called “Chad” because Ichigo mispronounced his last name. Chad has almost superhuman strength, and he develops spiritual powers throughout the course of the anime.

   Kisuke Urahara Kisuke Urahara was formerly the Captain of the 12th Division of the Gotei 13, and he was unjustly accused of being responsible for Sosuke Aizen’s villainous experiments. Kisuke opened a shop in Karakura Town after being saved by Yoruichi, and he eventually trains Ichigo to obtain Zangetsu. Richard says he’s a popular character, adding “he’s got Kakashi [Hatake from Naruto] vibes about him.”

   Yoruichi Shihoin When we first meet the shapeshifter Yoruichi Shihoin, she appears as a mysterious black cat. She’s Kisuke’s sassy sidekick, and she’s known for providing comedic relief in tense moments—but she’s also a powerful fighter, wise mentor, and loyal friend. And Richard adds that she’s one of the most popular characters in the series.

   Toshiro Hitsugaya Toshiro Hitsugaya is one of the youngest characters in Bleach, but he still brings a lot to the table. Despite his youth, the Captain of the 10th Division is known for his maturity and cool head—not to mention his striking white hair. He’s an asset to the Gotei 13, thanks to the dedication and hard work he puts into perfecting his Bankai.

   Byakuya Kuchiki Byakuya is the older brother of Rukia and the Captain of the Sixth Division. In the Soul Society Arc, he’s portrayed as a villain due to his willingness to execute his own sister. However, he eventually has a change of heart, even saving Rukia’s life during the Hueco Mundo invasion.

    Renji Abarai Renji is Byakuya’s lieutenant, as well as the love interest of Rukia. Unlike Byakuya, Renji isn’t willing to execute Rukia during the Soul Society Arc. He was willing to face his captain in battle to uphold what he thought was right. That said, Richard points out that he’s a controversial character, and not everyone likes him.

   Sosuke Aizen Sosuke Aizen is the former Captain of the Fifth Division. As Captain, he masked himself as soft-spoken and wise, he eventually reveals that he’s been secretly plotting to betray the Soul Society in an attempt to overthrow the Soul King and take his place. He’s ruthless in his pursuit of power, and willing to exploit anyone in the process.

   Yhwach Yhwach is the father of the Quincy race, the son of the Soul King, and the main protagonist of the Thousand Year Blood War arc. Yhwach has the ability to see and alter every possible version of the future. He also creates a powerful army of elite fighters, the Quincy Sternritter, by engraving an ability called a Schrift onto their souls.

   Jugram Haschwalth Jugram Haschwalth is the Grandmaster of the Quincy Sternritter and the second-in-command under Yhwach. His Schrift, “B: The Balance,” allows him to take any misfortune that would occur to him and spread it around to others. This effectively gives him the power to heal instantly from any wound and return it to his opponent, instead.

   Gerard Valkyrie Gerard Valkyrie is another powerful Quincy Sternritter. He’s also a member of the elite royal guard, the Schutzstaffel, and the heart of the Soul King. His Schrift, “The Miracle,” allows him to use hope to increase his size and strength. He can also use his sword Hoffnung to reflect damage back to his opponents—he’s truly a formidable foe.

   Lille Barro Lille Barro was the first Quincy to ever be given a Schrift by Yhwach. He’s the Captain of the Schutzstaffel, and he can use his Schrift, “X-Axis,” to pierce through any object or defense. He can also evolve into a celestial being through his Vollstandig transformation, making him one of the most impressive of Yhwach’s army.

   The Quincy Sternritters are elite Quincy fighters. The Quincy are a race created by Yhwach, the son of the Soul King. Quincy Sternritters are Yhwach’s most powerful fighters. Each has special abilities, including a Schrift—a letter of the alphabet that Yhwach engraves on their soul to awaken a dormant ability. The Sternritters include:

   The Gotei 13 is the military branch of the Soul Society. Although the Gotei 13 does have a centralized leader, the Captain-Commander, its 13 divisions primarily operate independently. Each division has its own Captain, officers, and specialization. The captains of the Gotei 13 include:

   Fullbringers are humans with special spiritual abilities. Fullbringers are created when a mother survives a Hollow attack before her child is born. The Hollow’s powers are then passed to the child. This gives them the ability to interact with and manipulate the souls of inanimate objects. Notable Fullbringers include:

   • Kugo Ginjo: Can turn his pendant into a sword
   • Orihime Inoue: Hairpins turn into spirits to assist her in battle
   • Chad Sado: The skin on his arms becomes armor
   • Shukuro Tsukishima: His katana allows him to travel into the memories and past lives of his opponents
   • Riruka Dokugamine: Places “cute” people or objects into her doll house
   • Jackie Tristan: Gets stronger as her boots get dirtier

Royal Guard

   The Royal Guard, or Zero Division, protects the Soul King. This 5-member tactical unit is the most elite fighting force in the Soul Society. Each member has a unique power and serves over a specific domain within the Soul King’s palace. They include:

   • Ichibe Hyosube (The Monk Who Calls the Real Name): Leader of the Royal Guard; holds power over the names of all things
   • Tenjiro Kirinji (The Hot Spring Demon): Guardian of the East; created the hot springs Shinigami use for healing
   • Kirio Hikifune (The Ruler of Grain): Guardian of the South; uses food to strengthen the Shinigami
   • Oetsu Nimaiya (The God of the Sword): Guardian of the West; created the Zanpakuto, the Soul Reapers’ swords
   • Senjumaru Shutara (The Great Weave Guard): Guardian of the North; created the black uniforms worn by the Shinigami
