Best Bleach Female Characters

Anime expert Eunice Ibama says that the top 5 strongest female characters in Bleach are:

  • Orihime Inoue: A pacifist with the power to reject any event by altering its reality.
  • Yoruichi Shihoin: A former Soul Reaper with the fastest moves in Soul Society.
  • Rukia Kuchiki: The Soul Reaper who introduced Ichigo to the world of Souls and Shinigami.
  • Senjumaru Shutara: A member of the Royal Guard who protects the Soul King with her dimension-manipulating cloth powers.
  • Rukia Kuchiki: A Soul Reaper with freezing abilities

  1. Senjumaru has the power to take over the world, says Ibama.[1] As a member of the Royal Guard, she protects the Soul King by weaponizing sewing and tapestry with her Zanpakuto. She can create and shape any type of cloth, use sewing needles and artificial limbs to take on opponents, and even trap targets inside of pocket dimensions to assault them with fatal attacks.[2]
    • Senjumaru is so powerful that when she activates her Bankai at full power, her spiritual pressure resonates through reality!

  2. Kirio Hikifune is the former Squad 12 captain and a Royal Guard member tasked with protecting the Soul King. As a Royal Guard member, she’s stronger than all of the captains and lieutenants in Soul Society, being able to create food that restores others’ strength and summon a Tree of Life with nigh-invulnerable energy-absorbing branches.[3]
    • Despite having few opportunities to really show off her power, we do know that Kirio’s Bankai upsets the balance of the three worlds, serving as a reminder of her power.
    • Kirio is often underrated because she has few chances to show her strength, but her ability to control organic life and growth using her Bankai has incredible potential.
      • She is even able to trap the Schutzstaffel by trapping them inside of the Tree of Life.

  3. Despite her pacifist nature, Orihime has the power to reject any event and return a physical state to what it was before using her Fullbring, Shun Shun Rika. This means she can heal practically any wound, form a shield that blocks attacks, and (as seen in the final season of Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War) reject the Quincy King himself, Yhwach, a feat that few—if any—other female characters have achieved.[4]
    • Ibama says that the healing in the newest episode of Bleach was beautiful, and even if Orihime isn’t the strongest character, she “was eating it up” in the latest episode.[5]
    • The fact that she is able to stand up against the strongest being in the universe is a testament to her strength and tenacity, even if she seemingly sacrifices herself in the process.
    • Shun Shun Rikka manifests as six fairy-like beings that help Orihime channel her powers.
  4. Originally introduced as a kind-hearted healer with a dark side, the former captain of Squad 4 is truly a coldhearted killer, the first Kenpachi, and the founder of Squad 11, the most brutal Squad in Soul Society. She is a master swordsman whose physical abilities stand out from the other Soul Reapers', but you shouldn’t take her healing abilities lightly, either. In fact, her healing abilities are so great that she often brings opponents back from the brink of death to draw out fights.[6]
    • Ibama says that Retsu is the strongest female character in Bleach. “Nobody’s touching her.”[7]
    • Despite her power, Unohana ultimately lets herself die by Kenpachi Zaraki’s hand so he can remove his mental barriers and fortify his strength ahead of the Quincy Blood War.
    • Unohana’s Bankai is especially strong, as it covers the area in a sea of red liquid that can cut down and heal a target, depending on what she intends.
  5. Introduced in the Can’t Fear Your Own World light novels, Aura Michibane is a Fullbringer who was raised isolated from the world. Because of this, she grew up near-emotionless, which limits her Fullbring abilities to matter transmutation. However, she’s still able to create incredibly powerful constructs and turn herself intangible, and she has been compared to the likes of Sosuke Aizen, a feat that speaks volumes about her abilities.[8]
  6. Nemu Kurotsuchi is the cyborg “daughter” of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, as well as his lieutenant, so it makes sense that she’s especially powerful. Not only is she practically invincible since Mayuri can put her back together when needed, but she’s also built with tons of different weapons and enhancements that put her on a level similar to captains.[9]
    • For example, during her battle against Pernida, Nemu uses her Soul Slicing technique, which takes energy from her soul and turns it into a lethal blast. This severely damages Pernida, causing him to lash out and destroy Nemu’s body.
    • When Pernida destroys Nemu’s body, he absorbs her cells. These cells force Pernida’s body into uncontrollable evolution, which ultimately leads to his destruction. This shows how deep Nemu’s bag of tricks goes.
  7. As the former captain of Squad 2 and the former head of the Shihoin clan, Yoruichi’s power speaks for itself. She’s a Soul Reaper who relies on Shunko (a special technique that imbues hand-to-hand combat with magic) and her incredible speed rather than a Zanpakuto, showing how much confidence she has in her abilities. And who can blame her? She is said to have the fastest Shunpo (flash step) in Soul Society, after all.[10]
    • When her Shunko is kicked into overdrive, Yoruichi transforms into an uncontrollable cat-like beast with wildly fluctuating spiritual pressure.
    • Not only does her cat-like Shunko form make her strong enough to nearly defeat Askin Nakk Le Vaar, but it’s also a callback to her debut, as she was originally depicted as a cat.
    • Ibama says Yoruichi is most people’s pick for strongest female character in Bleach.[11]
  8. Rukia Kuchiki is one of the most iconic female characters in the series, having stuck by Ichigo’s side since the beginning. And she’s very powerful, says Ibama.[12] Her Shikai, Sode no Shirayuki, allows her to lower the temperature of her surroundings to freezing, and when she activates her Bankai, she turns things down to absolute zero, being able to freeze seemingly-invincible enemies like Äs Nödt with ease.[13]
    • Rukia is the one who helps kick off the events of Bleach by giving Ichigo his Soul Reaper powers, so it’s only fitting that her power grows as the story progresses.
  9. Bambietta Basterbine is a Sternritter who leads a group of Quincies called the Bambies. As their leader, her Schrift shines above the other members of this group, giving her the ability to blow up anything she touches with her Reishi (spirit particles). This ability matches her explosive personality, as she doesn’t hesitate to attack and kill anyone who rubs her the wrong way.[14]
    • Bambietta is easily captain-level, as she is able to defeat Squad 5 captain, Shinji Hirako, without breaking a sweat.
  10. Liltotto stands out as a caring, stoic Sternritter who, despite her calm demeanor, has a power that rivals some of the stronger Lieutenants in the series. Her Schrift, “The Glutton,” lets her eat anyone and anything, making her an incredible surprise on the battlefield. She’s a surprisingly capable fighter who compounds her Schrift with immense strength and durability to overwhelm opponents.[15]
    • The Can’t Fear Your Own World light novels reveal that Liltotto can use the powers of anyone she eats until she’s fully digested the person in her stomach, putting her leagues above some of the other fighters on this list.
    • Liltotto is also a member of Bambietta’s group of Bambies.
  11. As the Queen of Hueco Mundo and the former 3rd Espada, Tier Harribel is arguably the strongest female Hollow in the series. She is able to manipulate water, has incredible physical strength and speed, and is an even better tactician. Harribel’s analytical skills are enough to keep the legendary Toshiro Hitsugaya on the ropes, and he’s one of the most powerful captains in Soul Society!
  12. Soi Fon is one of the strongest Soul Reapers in Soul Society, serving as captain of Squad 2 and the head of the Onmitsukido (Soul Society’s secret police force). She’s known as one of Soul Society’s deadliest assassins, particularly due to her incredible speed and her Shikai’s ability to kill anyone with two shots. Save for Yoruichi and some other heavy hitters, there are few characters who measure up to this deadly woman.[16]
    • As a stealthy assassin, Soi Fon often develops complex plans and strategies to sneakily take down her opponent.
    • Although she’s known for her stealth, Soi Fon’s Bankai is a gigantic rocket that blasts opponents away with ease. Because it’s so flashy, she prefers not to use it.

More Iconic Female Bleach Characters

  1. Although she’s often played up as a fun, laid-back character who cracks viewers up whenever she’s on screen, the 10th Squad lieutenant’s story is one of tragedy. As a child, she was targeted by Aizen for her soul, and as an adult, she is seemingly betrayed by her best friend, Gin Ichimaru, who pledges allegiance to Aizen. Nevertheless, she doesn’t let her tragedy define her. Instead, her carefree personality shines whenever she’s on screen, and underneath it, a fierce loyalty rages.[17]
  2. Tatsuki is just a regular human, but she’s one of Ichigo and Orihime’s best friends. She appears a lot more in the earlier seasons of Bleach, often serving as someone for our main characters to confide in or joke with as they struggle with the responsibilities of protecting Karakura Town.[18]
    • Despite her role as a confidant, Tatsuki is also a skilled martial artist who can effortlessly take down bullies who go after Orihime. Talk about the best of both worlds, right?
  3. Yachiru is the kind-hearted, childlike manifestation of Kenpachi Zaraki’s Zanpakuto spirit. He unknowingly manifested Yachiru long before the events of Bleach, and since he treated her like a real person and gave her a name, she manifested her own Zanpakuto and became a Soul Reaper. This gave Zaraki a lifelong companion who he initially didn’t even realize he was connected to, helping fundamentally shape his personal development.[19]
    • As the lieutenant of the 11th Squad, Yachiru is incredibly fierce and battle-hungry, just like her captain.
  4. Momo is the kind-hearted lieutenant of Squad 5. She was originally appointed by Sosuke Aizen and remained in her position when Shinji Hirako became the Squad’s new captain. She’s a master at Kido, being able to cast multiple spells in succession and combine some with her Zanpakuto attacks. She can also shoot fireballs at enemies using her Shikai, and they’re strong enough to throw off even the great Gerard Valkyrie![20]
    • Throughout the story, Momo isn’t known for her strength so much as she’s known for her caring, empathetic nature. When Aizen betrays the Soul Society, she is devastated, nearly refusing to believe it because of how much she cared for him.
    • Even after dealing with Aizen’s betrayal, Momo never lets her kind, caring demeanor fade, showing how resilient she is in the face of betrayal and turmoil.
  5. Nanao Ise is the co-lieutenant of the 1st Squad, serving under her uncle, Kyoraku Shunsui. She balances out his laid-back, carefree personality with her serious, sensible nature. As a Soul Reaper, she wields a Zanpakuto that’s been passed down in her family and has the ability to reflect divine attacks, but relies more on Kido, as she excels in it and has less experience as a swordsman.[21]
  6. Despite being the captain of Squad 4, Isane has mostly been a supporting character throughout Bleach. She’s an incredible healer, which comes in handy when the Soul Reapers are battling enemies like the Quincy or Espada (and matches up with her loyal, observant personality). She’s not the type to shy away from the enemy, though, as shown when she charges at Aizen, who is easily the strongest character at the time.[22]
  7. Kukaku is the current head of the Shiba clan and the older sister of Ganju Shiba. Although she’s a relatively minor character, she plays a crucial role in helping Ichigo and the gang break into the Seretei early in the series. Because of this, and her brash, outspoken personality, she’s beloved among Bleach fans!
  8. More commonly known as Nel, Nelliel is the former 3rd Espada. She was initially introduced as a caring child who abstained from violence, so her reveal as a powerful adult Espada who can absorb Ceros and send them back with double force came as a surprise, to say the least. Her Resurrección also turns her into a combative centaur, a form that she uses to joust with opponents.[23]
    • Nel’s adult form comes out when she deals with intense emotions. When active, she regains her Zanpakuto and sees a significant power boost. After a certain amount of time, however, she reverts back to her child form.
    • Nel helps turn the tides during the Arrancar arc, as she guides Ichigo through Los Noches and fights with him against Nnoitra Gilga.
  9. The mother of our protagonist plays a crucial role throughout the story. Although she doesn’t get too much screen time, her death at the hands of the Hollow Grand Fisher strongly influences Ichigo’s desire to protect his loved ones. Prior to her death, she still plays a huge role, as she is a powerful pureblooded Quincy who uses her powers for good.
    • She even saves Isshin Kurosaki’s life against a captain-level Hollow, showing how dedicated she is to protecting others (just like her son!).
  10. Hiyori is the loud, outspoken former lieutenant of Squad 12. Like Ichigo, she receives Hollow powers through a Hollowfication ritual that Aizen forces her into. After being exiled from Soul Society, she and her fellow Visoreds (Soul Reapers who were turned into Hollows) hide out for over 100 years, but when she returns to the battlefield alongside her fellow Soul Reapers, she still retains that outspoken personality that she’s known for.[24]
    • Hiyori’s outspokenness often translates into a reckless mentality in battle, as she often charges into the fight without properly surveying her opponent’s abilities.
