PDF download Download Article

There are so many amazing female characters in anime, whether you prefer action series, dramas, or rom-coms. But which female characters are the best? While that’s mostly subjective, we’ve partnered with anime experts to compile some of the best-written and most complex women in anime, whose strengths range from their physical powers to their kind hearts. Keep reading to find out who they are!

Yoruichi Shihoin (Bleach)

PDF download Download Article
  1. According to Ibama, Yoruichi is one of the best female anime characters. She’s a strong character who, despite everything she’s been through, always comes out on top. Even though she’s more of a side character in Bleach (who lots of people see as eye candy), Ibama notes that Yoruichi could smack someone to the next universe and they wouldn’t even know what to do with themselves![1]
    • Yoruichi is definitely one of the top anime waifus, but she’s so much more than her looks! She’s an intelligent leader and solid fighter, while still retaining her cheerful, playful, and witty side.[2]

Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon)

PDF download Download Article
  1. As Usagi (aka Sailor Moon) is one of the most popular anime characters of all time, she definitely deserves to be on this list, too. She’s the powerful guardian of love and justice who defeats evil, stands up for what’s right, and sees the good in others, but she’s also a regular teen girl! She loves sweets and romance, is quick to cry, and would prefer to laze around all day. But, she experiences a lot of growth throughout the series (while still being cheerful and goofy!).[8]
    • According to Ibama, all of the Sailor Scouts are iconic, amazing, and inspirational. Every single character has great qualities and is a strong female character.[9]

Yor Forger (Spy x Family)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Yor is one of the protagonists of Spy x Family, and there’s definitely more than meets the eye when it comes to her! She appears like a normal office clerk, which is why Loid Forger (aka Twilight) marries her, but unbeknownst to him, she’s secretly an assassin! She’s a strong and efficient killer, and due to her background, is reserved and doesn’t have the best social skills. However, she’s very kind and surprisingly gentle, and would do anything for the people she loves.[10]

PDF download Download Article
  1. Shoko is one of the main protagonists of the film A Silent Voice. She’s born deaf, and, unfortunately, is bullied for it by the other main character, Shoya, and his friends in elementary school. San (Princess Mononoke)

  1. San is the titular deuteragonist of the film Princess Mononoke, who fiercely fights for what she believes in. She sees humans as a threat to the forest she lives in and uses her warrior skills and feisty personality to protect it and the creatures who call it home. By the end of the film, though, she comes to understand what it truly means to be human.[13]

Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Frieren is the immortal elf protagonist of her series, whose story begins with a realization that life is truly fleeting. As anime & manga expert Mel Mascarenhas explains, Frieren was on an adventuring party with 3 other people, and after they defeated the enemy, they went their separate ways. After 50 years, they come back together because the main hero, Himmel, passes away. At the funeral, Frieren finds herself crying as she realizes that time is short, and she lets Himmel go without really getting to know him.[14] This leads to her real journey: to start shedding her detached outlook on life and begin truly connecting with others.[15]

Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)

  1. Mikasa is one of the protagonists of Attack on Titan and a seriously strong character—both physically and mentally. As anime expert Ed Erskine notes, Mikasa is a very skilled combatant and one of Eren's closest friends. Throughout the anime, she showcases both her skills, rising up the ranks quickly, and her loyalty to Eren.[19] She goes through a lot, but always maintains her cool head, iron will, and strong sense of right and wrong.[20]

Maki Zenin (Jujutsu Kaisen)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Maki is one of the most popular characters in Jujutsu Kaisen and understandably so, says Jones. While she’s not gifted with cursed energy, she’s an amazingly skilled fighter. And later in the series, she does get a power-up that enables her to eliminate the entire Zenin clan that was out to get her.[21] Pop culture commentator Michael Udayakumar adds that the Zenin Clan was super misogynistic, with Maki breaking the mold in terms of them looking down on her, and is now one of the strongest right now.[22]
15

Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Erza Scarlet is a seriously strong character in Fairy Tail. She’s a powerful mage and swordswoman who has an equally sharp and aggressive personality. That’s just what she looks like on the outside, though. She’s truly a caring person and the “mom” of the Fairy Tail team, who would protect any of them in a heartbeat. And underneath it all, she’s dealing with a tragic upbringing, which makes her a real, fully fleshed-out character.[23]

16

Revy (Black Lagoon)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Anime expert Preston Hargrove notes that Revy is one of his favorite female protagonists. She’s a mercenary at the Lagoon company who’s basically a hired hitman. He says Revy is seriously tough and doesn’t take crap from anyone. Plus, her dialogue is hilarious because she has a bad potty mouth![24] She’s definitely rude, aggressive, and sadistic, but that just covers up her traumatic past and secret desire to be better.[25]
17

Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Neon Genesis Evangelion is full of complex female characters, and Asuka is definitely one of the most compelling. Anime and manga enthusiast Brandon Riley notes that she’s a classic tsundere character, who’s very hot-headed and harsh. But as the episodes go on, it becomes clear that she does care; she’s just very traumatized. So, there are reasons for her harshness.[26] While the famed Eva pilot appears confident and aggressive on the outside, this is just to cover up her deep pain and insecurity.

PDF download Download Article
  1. Tsunade is certainly one of the physically strongest female characters in Naruto, as she’s the most powerful female ninja and the Hokage of her village. Nico Robin (One Piece)

PDF download Download Article

Nico joins Luffy’s crew and helps out by using her archaeological skills and ability to read Poneglyphs.[34]

Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Faye is one of the main characters and bounty hunters in Cowboy Bebop. She’s abrasive, arrogant, and lazy, and has a slew of bad habits. She also deeply mistrusts people, which is largely due to her tragic past. Despite herself, she finds herself caring for the crew on the Bebop and allows herself to become more vulnerable.
    • Anime expert Dr. Applesauce notes that what makes Cowboy Bebop so beautiful is that you’re told the story of Faye, as well as Spike and Jet Black, after the biggest events of their lives have happened. So, the anime shows the fallout of that as they’re working as bounty hunters just trying to survive.[35]
25

Kaguya Shinomiya (Kaguya-sama: Love is War)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Kaguya is the main female protagonist of this rom-com anime. As Hargrove explains, Kaguya and Miyuki, the male protagonist, are the geniuses of their high school who are both student council members. They both love each other but believe that if they’re the first to confess, they lose. So, each episode has them playing mind games to get the other to confess, which is totally hilarious.[36] There’s depth to the show, of course, as Kaguya portrays herself as cold and arrogant, but she really longs for kindness and connection.

Plus, her relationship with the main hero, Kirito, is sweet to watch. As Burns explains, Asuna and Kirito go through everything together, which makes it a beautiful journey.[41]
31

Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket)

PDF download Download Article
  1. Tohru is the main protagonist of the super cute rom-com anime Fruits Basket. Despite the losses she experiences early in her life, she’s optimistic, cheerful, and beyond compassionate. However, Tohru’s not without flaws, and she struggles with standing up for herself and admitting her insecurities. When she finds herself living with the Sohmas and discovers they’re cursed to turn into zodiac animals, she makes it her mission to free them and helps herself along the way.[42]

Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica)

PDF download Download Article
  1. For a show that looks so colorful and simplistic, anime expert Megan Blue notes that Madoka Magica is actually very complex.[43] And Homura is definitely a reason why the anime is so great. She starts the series as unconfident and weak, and becomes a powerful magical girl through sheer determination. Throughout the series, she’s put into tough situations and makes hard decisions that you might not like, but that’s what makes her compelling.[44]

First, Seras Victoria from the Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate series. What makes her so compelling is her incredible journey from a vulnerable police girl to an immensely powerful and resilient vampire. Her growth in strength, unwavering loyalty, and courage, even in the face of unimaginable horrors, truly makes her a force to be reckoned with.

Sticking with Hellsing, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is another absolute favorite. As the formidable head of the Hellsing Organization, she commands respect through her sharp intellect, iron will, and unwavering resolve. She's a true leader who took charge of a difficult legacy with incredible strength and gravitas, embodying sheer power without needing supernatural abilities herself.

Moving to a different genre, Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon is iconic. While her bubbly and sometimes clumsy personality brings so much joy and humor to the series, it's her deep well of empathy and unwavering belief in love and peace that truly makes her powerful. She consistently demonstrates immense bravery and self-sacrifice for her friends and the world, proving that kindness is a formidable strength.

Lastly, I have to mention Ran Kotobuki from Super Gals! Ran is the epitome of a 'gal' – stylish, confident, and fiercely independent. Beyond her trend-setting persona, she's incredibly loyal to her friends, offering unwavering support while also being brave enough to call them out when necessary. Her commitment to standing up for what's right and her refusal to tolerate disrespect make her an inspiring and truly memorable character.

A few of my favorite female anime characters are -
Rukia Kuchiki from Bleach. Seeing her growth from wanting her brother's approval to paving her own path in the story was beautiful, and that beauty was demonstrated through her Bankai.

Akane from Akane-Banashi. Always inspired by her father's rakugo, takes on rakugo society after exiling her father from the community. People will think she is a genius or a prodigy, but she works incredibly hard and has been training since an elementary age. Akane also displays such quirkiness and humor that makes it hard not to be captivated by her charm.

Sailor Jupiter/Makoto from Sailor Moon. When I first watched Sailor Moon during the 90s, Makoto/Sailor Jupiter always stuck out to me because she was everything I wanted to be: cute, strong, a great cook, but also athletic. In the 90s, there was still this concept of being a girly girl vs a tomboy, but Sailor Jupiter was both. I felt like I could have both identities without fitting into societal ideas for women and girls.

Mao Mao from Apothecary Diaries. Mao Mao comes from nothing and often finds herself in delicate or dangerous situations that are always one step away from her life ending. However, her skills as an apothecary and her ability to think critically, thanks to her training as an apothecary, save her time and time again. Despite having powerful connections that could bail her out, she uses her own knowledge and abilities to navigate these day-to-day challenges of working in the Imperial Palace.
