PDF download Download Article

Weapons play an important role in One Piece—they’re said to have a will of their own, and they choose the fighter who will wield them. One Piece swords are ranked by grade: Supreme Grade Blades are the strongest—there are 12 of them total, but only 5 are known so far in the series. The other grades are Great (21 total, with 7 known), Skillful (50 total, 2 known), and Grade. There are also a number of ungraded or unknown blades—including some really powerful ones. In this article, we’re explaining everything you need to know about these swords, with exclusive insights from an anime & manga expert—so let’s get started!

What are the most powerful swords in One Piece?

Anime & manga expert Simon Zeng says that the most powerful swords in One Piece, like Enma, draw and amplify energy from their users. • Supreme Grade: Yoru, Shodai Kitetsu, Ace, Murakumogiri, Yakuza Kasen
  • Great: Enma, Ame no Habakiri, Shusui, Wado Ichimonji, Nidai Kitetsu

  1. Yoru is a cross-shaped sword that’s over 2 m (6.6 ft) long. It has a long hilt with a bandage-wrapped grip, a golden pommel with blue cabochons (or red in the manga), and a golden crossguard. It also has a jet-black, single-edged blade and a mirror-like shine, and it’s considered one of the strongest swords ever made. This makes it a perfect weapon for Dracule Mihawk, aka the World’s Strongest Swordsman—in fact, he used Yoru to slice a ship in two with a single blow.[1]
    • Owner: Dracule Mihawk
    • Type: Single-edged greatsword; Black Blade
    • Name meaning: Night

  2. The Shodai Kitetsu is the strongest of the three Kitetsu blades. It’s a massive sword with a blade that looks like it’s made of wood. It has an incredible range and grows in size when its owner, Nusjuro, uses his Devil Fruit to transform into a Bakotsu. Nusjuro can also freeze his opponents by channeling ice through the sword.[2]
    • Owner: Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro
    • Type: Tachi-style, Cursed sword
    • Name meaning: First Generation Ogre Piercer

  3. Ace is a cutlass with a curved blade, a yellow hilt with a diamond pattern, a dome-shaped guard, and a thin hand guard. It was famously owned by Pirate King Roger, and it shares a name with his son, Ace. The sword Ace was lost after Roger died while battling the Whitebeard Pirates.[3] Zeng says this is one of his favorite in the series.[4]
    • Owner: Pirate King Gol D. Roger
    • Type: Cutlass
    • Name meaning: Ace
  4. Murakumogiri is the only known Supreme Grade Blade that isn’t actually a sword. Instead, it’s a polearm: specifically, a long, striped pole with a curved blade attached to one end by a brass bolster that’s decorated with a snake. Zeng says that this unique sword is another one of his favorites in One Piece.[5] Whitebeard used Murakumogiri throughout his long career as a pirate—it was especially powerful when he combined it with his shockwave attack. When he died, the weapon was buried with him.[6]
    • Owner: Edward Newgate (Whitebeard)
    • Type: Naginata
    • Name meaning: Gathering-Clouds Cutter
  5. At first glance, Yakuza Kasen looks like a walking stick—but it’s actually a shikomizue, or a sword disguised as a cane. Issho is the only Marine known to carry a Supreme Grade Blade. He’s also blind, and he rarely uses his sword as a melee weapon—he mainly uses it defensively or to channel his Devil Fruit for unique gravitational attacks like Gravito (a downward force on his opponent) and Moko (a shockwave attack).[7]
    • Owner: Issho
    • Type: Shikomizue (Cane Sword)
    • Name meaning: Yakuza Firing Line

  1. Enma is a sword that was forged on the island of Wano by the legendary swordsmith Shimotsuku Kozaburou. It has a lilac hilt with gold accents and a long, slightly curved blade. It’s said to be so powerful that it can cut all the way down to the bottom of hell, which is why it’s named after Enma, the King of the Underworld. Zeng notes that this blade is his favorite. He says that it's like a living sword—it can drain energy (Haki) from its user, but it can also amplify their energy.[8] It can only be held by the strongest of swordsmen.[9]
  2. Ame no Habakiri is a katana with a white hilt and a long, curved blade. It’s the counterpart to Enma, and both were originally wielded by their owner, Kouzuki Oden, at the same time. After Oden died, Ame no Habakiri went to his son, Kouzuki Momonosuke.[11]
    • Owner: Kouzuki Momonosuke (formerly Kouzuki Oden)
    • Type: Katana
    • Name meaning: Snake-Slayer
  3. Shishui has a silk-wrapped hilt a flower-shaped handguard, and a black blade with a purple section running along the blade. Shusui is the only known Black Blade other than Yoru. It was buried with its original owner, the samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma, but was later stolen. It eventually found its way to Zoro, who agreed to return it in exchange for Enma.[12]
    • Owner: Shimotsuki Ryuma (formerly Roroanoa Zoro)
    • Type: Katana, Black Sword
    • Name meaning: Autumn Water
  4. Wado Ichimonji is a long-bladed katana that was forged by Shimotsuki Kouaburou. It’s a beautiful minimalist sword with a white hilt decorated with a golden diamond pattern. It was originally owned by Kuina, Zoro’s friend and rival in their training years. After she died, Kuina’s father gave Zoro the sword, and Wado Ichimonji is now one of his most prized possessions.[13]
    • Owner: Roronoa Zoro
    • Type: Katana
    • Name meaning: Straight Line through the Path of Harmony
  5. Nidai Kitetsu is the second-strongest of the three Cursed Kitetsu blades. It has a blue and purple blade with a design that looks like flame, a gold handguard, and a purple hilt. It was created by Kotetsu, the ancestor of Kouzuki Sukiyaki, and it’s said to be strong enough to cut the Earth itself.[14]
    • Owner: Kouzuki Sukiyaki (formerly Kotetsu)
    • Type: Katana; Cursed sword
    • Name meaning: Second Generation Ogre Piercer

  1. Yubashiri is another sword wielded by Roronoa Zoro. It’s a katana with a cross-shaped guard, a black handle with gold accents, and a long, curved blade. Zoro was gifted this blade after Dracule Mihawk broke his twin blades in battle. Unfortunately, Yubashiri suffers much the same fate when it’s turned to rust by Shu in the fight at Enies Lobby.[15]
    • Owner: Roronoa Zoro
    • Type: Katana
    • Name meaning: Snow Run
  2. Oto and Kogarashi are the twin blades wielded by the Golden Lion Shiki. These identical blades have cross-shaped handguards with long, pointed blades and a red hilt. After their owner Shiki lost his legs, he attached the swords in their place and now uses them as prosthetics.[16]
    • Owner: Shiki
    • Type: Jian
    • Name meaning: Cherry Ten, Wintry Wind
  3. We don’t know much about the Kashu sword, but it appears to be a fairly simple katana with a round handguard. It was originally owned by Mr. 11, an agent from the Baroque Works. He was defeated in a duel by the Marine Tashigi, and she took the sword for herself.[17]
    • Owner: Tashigi (formerly Mr. 11)
    • Type: Katana
    • Name meaning: Flower Province
  4. Like Kashu, we don’t really know much about Yamaoroshi, other than that it’s a really large sword capable of chopping through a killer whale. It was also acquired by Tashigi—she got this one when Billy the Orca Killer was arrested by the Marines.[18]
    • Owner: Tashigi (formerly Billy)
    • Type: Katana
    • Name meaning: Wind Blowing Down from the Mountain
  5. Kosho was the very first sword that was used by Trafalgar Law. It’s only shown briefly, but it appears to be a katana with a diamond-shaped design on its hilt. The blade was snapped when Law fought Kalik Meidara—he kept the broken hilt for some time, but eventually buried it.[19]
    • Owner: Trafalgar Law
    • Type: Katana
    • Name meaning: Soaring Tiger
  6. 6
Kyokuren The Kyokuen is a sword that has a curved, red blade. Trafalgar Law sees it in the weapons shop on Welbems Island when he’s shopping for a replacement for his sword, Kosho, but he doesn’t buy it because he wants something that will be stronger than (instead of equal to) Kosho.[20]
    • Owner: Welbems Island weapon shop
    • Type: Unknown
    • Name meaning: Curved Flame
  7. 7
Zangetsumaru We don’t know much about this sword, other than that it’s one of the 50 Skillful Grade swords and that it’s supposedly strong enough to cut through the moon. It’s also extremely valuable–a fake copy of the sword was sold to a weapons shop on Welbems Island for 2,000,000 Berries.[21]
    • Owner: Unknown
    • Type: Unknown
    • Name meaning: Whole Moon Cutter

  1. Soul Solid is a shikomizue, or a sword disguised as a purple cane. When Brook unsheathes Soul Solid, though, he reveals a sharp, double-edged blade. Brook’s underworld energy adds a freezing effect to the sword’s attack.[23] Although it’s ungraded, it’s an extremely powerful sword, especially in Brook’s skilled hands.
    • Owner: Brook
    • Type: Shikomizue
    • Name meaning: Mourning Sword of Soul
  2. Napoleon is a unique sword because it’s alive. In its inactive form, it’s a big pink bicorne (pirate) hat with the Jolly Roger on the front. But when its owner Big Mom needs help, it can transform itself into one of 4 sword types: a cutlass, longsword, seax, and gladius.
    • Owner: Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom)
    • Type: Bicorne-sword Homie
    • Name meaning: Napoleon
  3. Gryphon is a saber with an extremely long blade and a green hilt. Its grade is unknown, but Shanks is shown fighting opponents with extremely powerful swords, including Murakumogiri and Yoru—so it’s likely this sword is roughly on the same level as these Supreme Grade swords.[24]
    • Owner: Shanks
    • Type: Saber

Sword Designations

PDF download Download Article
  1. In addition to the sword grades above, each sword can have additional designations. A sword can have multiple designations. For instance, all of the graded swords are considered Meito (Famous), so Yoru and Shusui are both Meito and Kokuto.
    • Meito (Popular or famous): Meito blades are the most popular or well-known swords in the world of One Piece. It includes graded blades like Yoru, Enma, and Soul Solid.
    • Yōtō (Cursed): Cursed blades are said to bring misfortune or death to those who wield them.
    • Kokuto (Black sword): Only Yoru and Shusui are Black swords. The blade is said to turn black after being used in battles. It’s thought that the Armament Haki plays a part in this transformation.
