Kane Parsons’ Backrooms movie and YouTube series all take place in the same universe, but the story can be a little confusing since it was released out of order. If you’re looking for a clear timeline to understand everything that’s happened in the Backrooms universe so far, we’ve got you covered. Horror expert Sydney Bermudez says the first video in the Backrooms series, chronologically, is “Overflow.” It marks the discovery of the Backrooms in 1972. The events in the Backrooms film occur in June and July of 1990, in the middle of the YouTube series. The entire series spans from the early 70s to the late 90s.

1972: Overflow

While the video doesn’t reveal much, it’s implied that an electromagnetic experiment has gone wrong due to massive solar flares. The video ends with a piece of paper signed by Ivan Beck, the head researcher on the experiment and eventual vice director of Async Research Institute, the company that researches the Backrooms.[2]

May 10, 1982: Prototype

At 3:17 AM, Async ran their third test of the system, causing a bright glowing light to appear inside the doorway before going out of control and returning to normal.

Around 5:04 PM, the threshold begins to glow, and the lab starts to shake and take damage. While some researchers urged to stop the test, the machine was left running and successfully opened a doorway to the Backrooms for the first time.

The report describes that Doe died of malnutrition 5 days earlier, but the parts of his body did not decompose as normal. The body contained mutated strains of the hay bacillus bacteria. The person performing the autopsy asks Ivan Beck where the body was found, meaning the Backrooms are still secret to the public.

February 28, 1990: Informational Video

  1. "Informational Video" is the next video in chronological order, explains Bermudez.[12] It starts as an onboarding video for researchers on “Project KV31” to explore the Backrooms. A group of researchers, including Peter Tench, enters the Backrooms to conduct research. When Tench gets separated from the rest of the group, they disappear, and Tench is left alone. He eventually finds the threshold back to the real world again, but the structure is different than when we entered.[13]
    • The other researchers believe Tench went missing or died.
    • While the video says “02/29/1990”, it wasn’t a leap year, and that date does not exist.

When Tench reappeared, he was kept in a secret room so no one knew he was still alive. As Tench escaped the facility, he died from falling and hitting his head on a rock.[22]

Async employee Naren Warne is attacked by an unknown entity. Later that month, Clark discovers a doorway to the Backrooms in the basement of his furniture store. On July 3rd, Clark brings 2 of his employees with him into the Backrooms, and they are attacked by an entity. After receiving a concerning phone call from Clark a few days later, his therapist, Mary, enters the Backrooms and gets trapped by him.
    • Clark reveals to Mary that he’s been staying in the Backrooms and wants to stay there. He is then attacked by Captain Clark, a giant, monstrous entity dressed in his pirate mascot outfit.
    • Mary successfully kills Captain Clark and gets rescued by Async researchers in hazmat suits. When she’s interrogated by Phil, one of the employees, he reveals that Async used to manufacture MRI machines before studying the Backrooms.

In the middle of the footage, a Spanish commercial for cough syrup from the 2000s cuts through interference before the clip goes back to normal.
