The Backrooms are more popular than ever—and the yellow-walled buildings are just the beginning. If you explore long enough, you might find yourself in Level 94, a cartoon-like land filled with rolling hills. We partnered with a horror expert to explain everything about this dreamcore level, including what it is, whether it’s safe, and how to enter and exit. Plus, we’ll go over how to play Level 94 in Escape the Backrooms!

Horror expert Sydney Bermudez says that Level 94 is one of the most popular fan-created levels. It features green hills, simple houses, and picket fences. There’s also a floating castle in the distance, which is the home of the Animated King. At night, entities called Animations emerge and attack anything non-animated.

- Level 94 feels a little ‘off,’ like you’re in a dream. Everything in the town is a little grainy, and it looks like it’s been animated in a stop-motion style. You may also see random furniture or rooms set into the hills.
- The town has an old-fashioned feel. Cars and milk vans in the town are styled after vehicles from the 1930s. And siren poles placed around the town occasionally play cheerful music that sounds like it comes from a vintage cartoon.
- You can sustain yourself for a while here. The fountain in the center of town and the milk vans are filled with Almond Water. The water towers may also contain Almond Water.
- The town is only safe during the daytime. At first, it looks safe, but many versions of the lore claim that strange entities can appear at night, turning the otherwise calm environment into something much more dangerous, adds Bermudez.^{[4]

The Castle is the home of the Animated King. The Castle of the Transparent Mountain (sometimes called Level 94.1) appears to float high above the city (it actually sits on a semi-invisible hill). When you go inside the Castle, everything is brightly-colored, like a carnival or funhouse. It’s decorated with ball pits, colorful slides, and inflatables.^{[5]

- The Castle can expand infinitely. As you explore, the Castle will continuously get larger, so it’s very easy to get lost while you’re exploring.
- Avoid the Robo men guarding the Castle. These giant robots are fairly passive most of the time, but if you try to touch anything in the Castle, they’ll become aggressive and throw you outside.
- You’ll find the Animated King in the Throne Room. Anyone who encounters the King must go through a series of tests. He will cause your deepest fears to manifest in front of you in animated form. If you give in to your fear, you’ll be turned into one of the King’s subjects, but if you don’t, he’ll either teleport you back into the town or to another Backrooms level.^{[6]

Level 94 is relatively safe during the day. Level 94 is listed as having a Survival Difficulty of 3, but that pretty much only applies at night. As long as the sun is up, feel free to explore the grassy hills and dreamcore-inspired houses. The only danger is the uncanny, uneasy feeling that sits in the pit of your stomach—over time, it may slowly drain your sanity.^{[7]

Dangerous entities appear at night. Once the sun goes down and the music stops, Level 94 turns into a dangerous place filled with entities. The most dangerous of these are Animations—glitchy, uncanny claymation cartoons that aggressively attack anything that doesn’t look animated. (In other words … you!)^{[9]

How do you enter and exit Level 94?

You can enter Level 94 from Level 601. From Level 601 (“The End”), go to the Hub, then jump into the rectangular hole that appears in the ground. You’ll land in the grass outside a house in Level 94.^{[11]

- Beat the King’s test or noclip through the houses to exit. If you successfully withstand the King’s fear test, he may send you to another Backrooms level. But if he just sends you back to the grassy hills of Level 94, you may be able to exit by noclipping through the walls in one of the houses to land back in Level 7, 9, or 53.^{[12]

Level 94 in Escape the Backrooms

Reach the Castle before nightfall to beat Level 94. Escape the Backrooms (Steam, Xbox) is a popular game based on Backrooms levels. When you first enter Level 94, you’ll find yourself in the grassy hills, surrounded by houses. You’ll have 3 minutes of daylight for the first daytime cycle. Try to get to the water tower and floating castle before the time is up.^{[13]

- Hide quickly when night falls. Once the sun goes down, Animations will come out. They’ll kill you instantly if they catch you. If you’re in a house, hide under the bed, on top of the bed, or in cabinets. If you’re outside, try to get to the top of a hill—Animations can’t go to higher altitudes. Nighttime lasts 1 minute in the game.
- Days get shorter after the first day/night cycle. If you survive the first night, move quickly. After the first night, days will only last 1 minute and 45 seconds.
- Go into the back of the delivery van on the road. About halfway down the road to the Castle, you’ll see a milk van—if you get into the back, you’ll find Almond Water for a Stamina boost. The van will also carry you part of the way up the hill.
- Climb the rope to get into the castle. Once you’re inside, solve the shape puzzle. Then, keep the Clown in your sight to avoid being attacked until the timer counts down from 100, and get on the rollercoaster to move to the next level.

No, none of the Backrooms levels are real. Level 94 is one of the most popular areas in The Backrooms fandom, but it’s entirely fictional. The Backrooms was created by an anonymous user on the message board 4chan. According to the (imaginary) lore, you can “noclip” into the Backrooms by leaning into a wall in a liminal space.
- More and more fans started adding their own interpretations to the Backrooms—including Level 94.
- Although it’s very popular, Level 94 does not appear in the recent Backrooms movie directed by Kane Pixels.
