In My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, each pony’s cutie mark represents something unique about their identity, like a talent, passion, skill, or personality trait. No two cutie marks are the same because each one reflects a pony’s true self and inner magic—two things that are unique to each pony. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors.

How and when do cutie marks appear?

   Cutie marks appear when a young pony discovers their purpose in life. Each pony typically gets their cutie mark early in life; the timing is similar to puberty, when a human starts growing into an adult with unique attributes. Cutie marks manifest on their own, usually when a pony discovers their true purpose or passion in life—you can’t make them appear. When a mark appears, it signifies a time of personal growth and self-discovery because it means the pony’s true identity is forming.

   • Cutie marks are considered to be a rite of passage. When a pony gets their cutie mark, they throw a celebration called a "cute-ceañera" (which is a play on “quinceañeras” in Latin American culture—parties that celebrate a girl’s 15th birthday).
     • For example, in “Call of the Cutie,” Diamond Tiara celebrates her cute-ceañera that her friends throw for her.
   • Ponies are called “blank flanks” if they still don’t have their cutie marks. This is typically used in a mean way to tease young ponies.
   • Most ponies have cutie marks by the time they reach adulthood, but there are a few exceptions (Saddle Arabia delegates, King Sombra, and the Kirin).

   The cutie marks belonging to the Mane Six are the most famous. There are tons of characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but the show does revolve around 6 core protagonists: Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy. These ponies represent the Elements of Harmony and are Ponyville’s main heroes. Here are their cutie marks (and what they mean):

   • Rainbow Dash (Cloud with Rainbow Lightning Bolt): Represents loyalty, speed, and her Sonic Rainboom ability, which is extremely important in the show.
   • Twilight Sparkle (Six-pointed Starburst): Signifies her magical talent and her being the embodiment of the Mane Six’s magical powers.
   • Applejack (Three Red Apples): Represents her honesty, her family's farm, and how much she loves her family.

   There are many episodes about cutie marks in the MLP series. Because getting your cutie mark is such an important event, it’s a topic that comes up often in the series. These episodes are chock full of cutie mark lore! If you want to do a deep dive, here are some key “cutie mark” episodes to watch (with links to watch them for free!):

   • “Call of the Cutie” (S1, Ep12): Apple Bloom worries about not having her cutie mark. She forms the “Cutie Mark Crusaders” with Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, two other ponies without cutie marks.
   • “The Cutie Mark Chronicles” (S1, Ep26): The Mane Six tell their individual stories about how they got their cutie marks. The three Crusaders learn about these origin stories.
   • “The Cutie Pox” (S2, Ep6): Apple Bloom tries a few dishonest shortcuts to gain her cutie mark and ends up developing “cutie pox.”

   Yes, cutie marks are magical, but it’s never fully explained. The ponies themselves are magical creatures, and the cutie marks “magically” appear when a pony finds their true purpose in life. In “Twilight’s Kingdom” (S4, Ep 25 & 26), Lord Tirek drains the ponies’ magic, and after he’s consumed it, their cutie marks completely disappear–which indicates the cutie marks are fully connected to the ponies’ magic.

   • One popular theory is that the cutie marks are their connection to the magical energies of destiny and the universe.
