Tips for Asking Questions

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Ask the questions you'd like them to ask you. This is a pro-tip from dating coach Cristina Morara, who explains that if you'd like to talk about something important to you (or brag about something cool about yourself), one way to introduce the subject is to ask your date about it first. Then, they'll likely return the question to you.[11]
    • "Let's say that you're a big traveler," she says. You'd ask your date something like, "'Where have you traveled' or 'what's one of the coolest places you've been?'" and then, hopefully, they'd ask you the same questions.[12]
    • "So it's not only just sharing," she explains. "It's about them being able to reveal something a little more meaningful about yourself."[13]
  2. 2
Ask questions that will reveal shared interests and values. It might seem obvious, but Quinn encourages asking yourself, "'What would make me more attracted to [them] if I figured out about [them]?' 'How can I be curious to see if [they share] those qualities and values?' 'What excites me? And how can I see if [they want] to share that with me?'"[14]
    • Dating and relationship coach Donna Barnes seconds Quinn's tip: "I'm a sports fan. So, if I'm out with somebody, I always want to know, are you a sports fan? Like, 'Do you like going to games?' Like, 'How much of a sports fan are you?'"[15]
  3. 3
Avoid interrogating your partner. The goal is to have a fun, relaxed conversation to get to know each other and boost intimacy—not to make them feel like they're being grilled, instructs Dating and Relationship Coach Lada Kain.[16] One way to help a conversation feel lower-pressure and more organic is by asking open-ended questions. So instead of a yes-or-no question like "Do you want to have kids?" you could ask, "How do you feel about having children?" This will allow for a more nuanced answer from them—and perhaps allow you both to build a conversation off of the subject, rather than rapid-fire jumping from yes-or-no question to yes-or-no question.
  4. 4
Prepare a few questions in advance. You shouldn't attack them with questions, but you also don't need to improvise. Dating coach Renee Slansky suggests giving yourself conversation prompts before a date. "We don't have to necessarily go out there and just wing it," she says, "because a lot of the time when we wing it, we put ourselves in a position where we don't feel as confident."[17]

Why ask your partner questions?

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Asking your partner questions can bring you both closer together. "Initiating a thoughtful conversation with your partner can open the door to more intimacy," observes relationship coach Zach Pontrello.[18]
  2. 2
It's also a way to get to know them and test compatibility. As Barnes says, the point of a first date is to figure out if they're the right person for you, and asking questions is the way to do that.[19] On a first date, a question like, "Do you think you'd ever want to have kids?" might seem forward, but it's better to get dealbreakers out of the way sooner than later.
  3. 3
Asking questions shows your partner you're interested in them. Whether you're on your first date or your twentieth anniversary, asking questions is a great way to show your partner you care about them, you accept them, and you're invested in their thoughts, feelings, and day-to-day life. As dating and relationship coach Mark Rosenfield points out, "One of the real rewarding things about relationships is that it's an opportunity to feel accepted, especially for parts of yourself that may not have been accepted before."[20]
