Son Goku is arguably one of the most popular characters in the world, and his extensive family tree gets just enough love. The tree goes deep, with each character having lore that can keep you reading for hours. In this article, wikiHow has partnered with a Dragon Ball expert to break down Goku’s family tree and explain all of the characters in it. Read on to learn all about Goku’s complete family tree (and hear some fun facts about the family).

Dragon Ball Z Goku Family Tree (Chart)

Son Goku’s family tree is fairly extensive. He is the son of the low-class Saiyans, Bardock and Gine, as well as the adopted son of Grandpa Gohan. He is Raditz’s brother, the husband of Chi-Chi, the father of Gohan and Goten, and the grandfather of Pan. He is also Videl’s father-in-law and the Ox-King’s son-in-law.

Bardock is Goku’s biological father. Bardock was a low-class Saiyan warrior from Planet Vegeta. Sometime during his life, he fought alongside a woman named Gine, who later became his partner. The two had children named Raditz and Goku, but they had to send the latter off to Earth due to Planet Vegeta’s impending destruction. They later died when the planet exploded.^{[1]

Gine is Goku’s biological mother. Gine was a low-class Saiyan who worked for the Meat Distribution Center on Planet Vegeta. She originally fought alongside Bardock on his combat team, and the two developed a relationship. They had two kids, Raditz and Goku, and while Gine initially raised Goku as an infant, she and Bardock had to send him to Earth before Planet Vegeta’s destruction.^{[2]

Grandpa Gohan is the man who raised Goku. Dragon Ball expert Stephanie Paz says that Grandpa Gohan is the man who raised Goku after he crashed on Earth. One day, Grandpa Gohan was hiking when he came across a Saiyan pod with baby Goku crying inside of it. That day, he took him in and raised him to be the strong, kind-hearted man we know today.^{[3]

Chi-Chi is Goku’s wife. Chi-Chi and Goku first met when they were kids, and Chi-Chi quickly took a liking to him. Chi-Chi took this as a promise to come marry her, and they later tied the knot at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. They went on to have two children.

Mr. Satan is Videl's father. Although Goku and Mr. Satan (a.k.a. Hercule) aren't related by blood, their children are married, making them in-laws. Way before their children met, Goku and Mr. Satan shared a battlefield during the Cell Games, as Satan had also challenged Cell. After the Cell and Buu Sagas, the two became co-grandfathers to Pan, Gohan and Videl's child.

Bardock and Gine’s partnership was rare for Saiyans. Typically, Saiyans have little care for romance and family life, as they’re a warrior race that primarily focuses on fighting and strength. For Bardock and Gine, however, this was not the case. After meeting and fighting together on the battlefield, the two formed a romantic partnership and went on to mate for life, breaking the Saiyan tradition.^{[10]

Goku and Chi-Chi’s marriage was based on a misunderstanding. Although the two share a strong love for each other, when Goku first promised to marry Chi-Chi one day, he didn’t know what he was promising. Chi-Chi told him that her father would likely give him her hand, but he didn’t know that she meant in marriage. He was just happy to get something from Chi-Chi’s family!
- When Chi-Chi confronted Goku about his promise when they were older, he had no idea what she was talking about. However, the two did go on to get married and build a big, loving family.

Every man in the family has fought Frieza except for Goten. Bardock was the first in the family to battle Frieza when he attempted to stop the blast used to destroy Planet Vegeta. Decades later, Gohan would fight the tyrant alongside Vegeta, Krillin, and Piccolo, before Goku showed up and took over. Goku eventually emerged victorious, making Goten the only man in the family not to fight Frieza.

Goku and Chi-Chi are technically royalty. Although it’s easy to forget, Chi-Chi’s father was the king of a small village. This technically makes Chi-Chi a Princess, which means Goku is technically a prince by marriage. If you really want to take it far, you could say Gohan and Goten are in line for royalty if Goku and/or the Ox-King were to pass away.
