He’s a wealthy British aristocrat who unknowingly kicks off the series by adopting Dio Brando, the son of the thief Dario Brando. He raises Dio the same as he does his biological son, Jonathan, molding them both to be respectable gentlemen. He’s particularly harsh on Jonathan, who lacks Dio’s fine manners.

   Jonathan Joestar Jonathan is the first JoJo of JJBA who headlines Season 1 Part 1, Phantom Blood, says anime & manga expert Cedric Han. He’s the noble son of George, whose life is upended when he gains an adoptive brother, Dio. Dio attempts to ruin Jonathan’s life and steal the Joestar fortune, which he does by turning himself into a vampire and killing George. This forces Jonathan on a path to stop Dio, where he masters the ancient martial arts technique the Ripple to prepare for their ultimate face off.

   Dio Brando Dio is the psychopathic big bad of JJBA. He is the son of Dario Brando, a thief who encountered George Joestar, who experienced abuse and poverty as a child. This left him with the desire to be the richest man alive. Anime and manga expert Mel Mascarenhas explains that Dio gets adopted into the Joestar family but is after their wealth, and ends up killing George. He’s unable to steal the family fortune, though, so he sets his sights on becoming the most powerful being. Dio uses the Stone Mask to become a powerful vampire and begins his journey to world domination, where he encounters various Joestars who stand in his way.

   Holly (Joestar) Kujo Holly Kujo is a recurring character in Season 2, Stardust Crusaders, but she’s pretty important! She sets her son Jotaro’s journey in motion after she learns from her father, Joseph, that Dio has taken over Jonathan Joestar’s body (which he stole at the end of Season 1 Part 1) and developed a Stand ability. This causes the rest of the Joestar descendants to develop a Stand. When Holly’s manifests, she can’t control it, causing her to develop a severe illness. So, Jotaro and Joseph set out to find and destroy Dio to save her.

Jotaro unknowingly develops a powerful Stand ability at an early age that gives him incredible strength and fighting powers, which ultimately results in him going to jail. After he learns where his Stand comes from and Holly falls sick, he teams up with Joseph and heads to Egypt to defeat Dio.

The two soon learn that Angelo gained his powers from an arrow that’s connected to Dio. This begins Josuke’s journey across Morioh to find the arrow (alongside his friends and Jotaro) and defeat the evil Stand users who come across his path.

This also technically makes Giorno Joseph Joestar’s uncle! And despite experiencing a tragic childhood similar to Dio’s, Giorno develops into a righteous young man who wants to protect the innocent…which he does by joining and taking over a mafia syndicate in Italy.

While incarcerated, she receives a visit from Jotaro, who warns her about some of Dio’s henchmen who are after him. They’re then attacked by Dio’s loyal follower, Enrico Pucci, who steals Jotaro’s memories and Stand. It’s revealed that Pucci wants to reset the universe and wipe out the Joestars for Dio, and while Jolyne does manage to save her father and defeat Pucci, the universe does reset, thus ending the main JJBA timeline.

That comes with a major caveat, though, as Jodio is extremely protective and loyal to his sibling, Dragona, and their mother, Barbara Ann.

   The Joestars are a diverse family with a connection to the supernatural. While the Joestars come from an aristocratic British family, the descendants come from diverse backgrounds, including Japan, America, and Italy. They’re all united by a distinct, star-shaped birthmark near their left shoulder and the personal journeys they go on, where they encounter supernatural foes and enemies with fantastical abilities.
