Slang expert Tobi Nwodo explains this looksmaxxing term
PDF download Download Article

The looksmaxxing term "looksmatch" is going viral, leaving non-looksmaxxers wondering what it means. Looksmaxxing is a concept that suggests the best way to find a partner is to look for someone with a similar level of physical attractiveness. But is it accurate? For this article, we partnered with a slang expert and a dating and relationship coach to help us explain what a looksmatch is, tell you what the research says about whether people really looksmatch, go over the psychological and social impacts of looksmatching, and explain whether you should do it. Let's go!

Looksmatch Meaning

Slang expert Tobi Nwodo says “looksmatch” is a slang term for someone whose physical looks are equally as attractive as yours. Looksmaxxers use it in a dating context to look for a similarly attractive partner. It's based on the hypothesis that most people end up with partners with the same level of attractiveness.

What is a looksmatch in dating?

  1. Nwodo says the term, which means you and your partner are on the same level looks-wise, is popular in the looksmaxxing community.[1] It's based on the matching hypothesis, which says that most people end up with romantic partners with a similar level of attractiveness.[2]
    • According to this theory, a supermodel is more likely to find their looksmatch in another supermodel. Meanwhile, an average-looking person is more likely to date or marry another person with average looks.
    • Be aware that looksmatching is closely associated with the looksmaxxing and incel communities, which are largely believed to be misogynistic. While there’s nothing wrong with looking for a partner who’s physically attractive, that shouldn’t be the only thing you’re focused on.

Where does the term “looksmatch” come from?

PDF download Download Article
  1. The term “looksmatch” likely originated in the incel community. Looksmatching is a concept used within the looksmaxxing community, which originated in online incel spaces.[3] Incels are mostly men who have been unsuccessful in romantic or sexual relationships with women. They often use "looksmatch" and similar terms to promote the idea of forced monogamy (meaning that society rewards monogamous relationships) and other misogynistic views.
    • The term is believed to have originated in 2018, when it was posted on the r/BattleOfTheSexes subreddit.
    • In 2024, the term even inspired a trend on X (Twitter) where users posted images of people they believed were looksmatched.

How Looksmatches Are Determined

Looksmaxxers often use the PSL scale to find their looksmatch. The PSL scale is a system used by the looksmaxxing community to rate people’s physical attractiveness based on facial harmony, angularity, and other factors, like nose shape and eye tilt.[4] Looksmaxxers will determine where they fit on the scale and search for partners with the same ranking.
    • The scale is ranked from 1-10, with 10 being the most attractive.
    • For example, someone who feels they're a 6 on the PSL scale (above average attractiveness) might look for a partner who's also a 6.
    • Caution: The PSL scale is arbitrary and doesn't accurately measure someone's attractiveness in real life. Attractiveness is subjective, so there’s no actual way to rate someone’s attractiveness.

Some AI apps also claim to find your looksmatch. Some apps, like LooksMatched, use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate a photo of your looksmatch, so you can get an idea of what your ideal romantic partner might look like. These apps claim to analyze your facial harmony and symmetry to determine how well you’d match with someone else. Since attractiveness is subjective, however, this is not supported by science.

Do people actually looksmatch?

  1. There’s lots of research to back this up, too. For example, a 2024 study of opposite-sex couples showed that both men and women tend to have a good idea of how attractive they are. They also mostly end up settling down with partners who are on the same level of beauty.[6] However, this does not mean that everyone who does so is intentionally looksmatching.
    • Looksmatching is largely used by people actively involved in the looksmaxxing community, so those people may intentionally try to looksmatch. However, if someone is not interested in looksmaxxing, they probably don’t intentionally looksmatch.
    • It’s important to remember that attractiveness is subjective. So while one person may think of themselves as not very beautiful, they might look beautiful to someone else.
    • It’s also important to note that couples look for other qualities besides physical attractiveness, which determine how desirable they find a prospective partner. For example, people also tend to match up on their values, communication styles, and lifestyles.[7]
  2. A UC Berkeley study found that while most people end up with a partner who's as attractive as they are, they first search for more attractive partners.[8] Another study found that being popular was just as helpful for finding a partner as attractiveness.[9] Ultimately, most people select dates based on their sense of self-worth and what they feel they deserve in a partner, not on a single trait or attribute.[10]
    • Partners are more likely to have mismatched levels of attractiveness if they were friends first before getting romantically involved. These couples have spent a lot of time getting to know one another, so they've already learned that looks are not as important as communication and values.[11]

Psychological & Social Impacts of Looksmatching

PDF download Download Article
  1. Even though most people who date successfully end up with someone of a similar attractiveness, they usually don't start that way. Instead, they start by looking for someone more attractive than they are. Unfortunately, this can leave other average-looking or less attractive people with a smaller pool of potential partners (initially). But if more people looked for their looksmatches, more people might find love quicker.[12]
  2. If someone doesn't believe they're good-looking (according to Western beauty standards), looksmatching might discourage them and make them think that they’re not worthy of an attractive partner. After all, the whole point of looksmatching is to date people of a similar attractiveness. Therefore, in true looksmatching, someone who's considered hot wouldn't date someone who's not as hot as they are.
    • Of course, this isn't how dating works in real life. But someone who believes in it might go to extreme lengths to improve their appearance, just because they think they can't get an attractive partner otherwise.
    • Remember, there’s no “rule” that people of similar attractiveness levels can only date each other! Attractiveness is entirely subjective, anyway. The only thing that matters is that you find someone attractive and they have the qualities you’re looking for, and that they like you back.
  3. Looksmatching may cause people to miss red flags. Barnes explains that because so much of dating is initially based on attraction, many relationships end once people figure out they have nothing in common with their partner.[13] If a person only dates someone whose looks match their own, they could end up with someone who is similarly attractive, but whose personality or values are the complete opposite of theirs. They might even pair up with someone toxic or abusive. While physical attractiveness is important, it’s also important that they have an attractive personality and hold similar values and beliefs.
    • On the other hand, people could also miss out on green flags and reject a wonderful partner because they're not as attractive as they would like.

Is looksmatching a good idea?

PDF download Download Article
  1. “I think you really find your soulmate by being open-minded and not as visually stimulated,” says Barnes.[14] While looksmatching may help some people find partners, it’s important to remember that attractiveness is only one part of the equation when looking for a romantic partner. In fact, research shows that looks become less important the longer you're together.[15] With that in mind, when you're dating, assess the other person's personality, character, values, and goals. Ask yourself these questions in addition to whether you find them attractive:
    • Do you enjoy being around them?
    • Do they listen to you and empathize with you?
    • Do they respect your boundaries?
    • Do they form their own opinions while still respecting yours?
    • Can you see yourself building a future with them?
