Miguel from Jujutsu Kaisen Explained

Anime & gaming expert Connor Barnes says Miguel Oduol is a very strong sorcerer in JJK. He initially served under Suguru Geto’s command and fought against Gojo. After Geto’s defeat, Gojo recruited Miguel to train Okkotsu. He’s strong thanks to his Prayer Song cursed technique, stamina, and Black Rope cursed tool.

Who is Miguel Oduol from Jujutsu Kaisen?

  1. According to Barnes, Miguel is an incredibly strong sorcerer who possesses one of the only cursed tools that can break Gojo’s infinity. He also trains with Yuta Okkotsu.[1] He initially served as Suguru Geto’s commander and wished to see him become king. After Geto’s death, however, Miguel trained Yuta Okkotsu to be one of the strongest sorcerers in the series. He served as a crucial figure in Okkotsu’s development, even though he was forced to become his mentor by Satoru Gojo.[2]
    • Miguel is a tall, dark-skinned man from a Kenyan village. Barnes says he dresses very fashionably on the show.[3] He sports iconic black sunglasses, a beret, hooped earrings, a zipped up white shirt, and dark pants.
    • Despite serving Geto in his bid to eliminate all non-sorcerers, Miguel doesn’t share the same hate for non-sorcerers.
    • Despite being a relatively serious man, Miguel has a lighthearted side. He’s also been noted to sound like MMA comedian Bobby Ologun.
    • “Miguel fights Gojo early on in JJK Zero and then comes back for the Sukuna fight later on in the show,” Barnes says. “[He] doesn't get much screen time compared to other characters, but definitely makes his mark when he's featured.”[4]

Is Miguel good or bad?

  1. When he’s first introduced in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Miguel is a mercenary who joins Geto’s cause and fights against Satoru Gojo. After Geto’s death, however, Gojo makes Miguel become a mentor to Yuta Okkotsu. Not only do the two grow close, but Miguel also warms up to the idea of being a hero, going on to help the main cast in the fight against Sukuna.
    • Miguel isn’t necessarily good or evil. He’s a mercenary whose actions generally depend on who’s paying him. At the start of the story, however, he leans towards bad before later sliding towards good.

What role does Miguel play in the story?

PDF download Download Article
  1. When he’s first introduced, Miguel serves as a partner to Suguru Geto during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Although Miguel didn’t share the same desire to exterminate all non-sorcerers, he was especially loyal to Geto and wanted him to become the king. He even went as far as to fight Satoru Gojo for him, and surprisingly kept up with The Honored One.[5]
    • His efforts during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons earned him the title of “MVP” from Suguru Geto.
  2. After the death of Geto, Gojo approached Miguel and designated him as Yuta Okkotsu’s mentor and trainer. After the events of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Miguel and Okkotsu go to Miguel’s home in Kenya, where Miguel trains Yuta and teaches him how to better harness his cursed energy.[6]
    • After his defeat at the hands of Gojo, Miguel was reluctant to speak to him, telling Yuta that he didn’t want to talk.
  3. Alongside Larue (another one of Geto’s former disciples), Miguel returns during the Shinjuku Showdown arc to help fight against Sukuna with the rest of JJK’s main characters. Just before Sukuna kills Ui Ui and defeats Atsuya Kusakabe, Miguel shows back up to save him. He and Larue then engage Sukuna in combat.[7]
    • Although he didn’t beat Sukuna, Miguel was able to hold him off until Sukuna adapted to his fighting style, after which he retreated.

What are Miguel’s powers and abilities?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Miguel is gifted with deep reserves of cursed energy. While he wasn’t formally trained and isn’t necessarily on the level of Yuta Okkotsu or Satoru Gojo, he still has a deep enough reserve of cursed energy to have built a respectable position in the Jujutsu underworld. This position has elevated his level as a mercenary, making him a powerful asset for anyone.[8]
  2. Miguel was able to take hits from Satoru Gojo while staying in the fight and even go on to counterattack and inflict damage to him. Other powerful characters, like Yuta Okkotsu and Kinji Hakari, have thrown up after taking one hit from Gojo, showing the sheer endurance that Miguel has in comparison.
  3. Miguel’s innate technique, Prayer Song, gives him the ability to dismiss and expel curses while enhancing his physical abilities, so long as he’s dancing to a specific beat etched into his body. This means he can strengthen himself while weakening opponents by sliding cursed energy away from their bodies, making him an especially formidable opponent.[9]
  4. Black Rope is an especially powerful cursed tool that has the power to nullify the cursed technique of anyone it touches in exchange for a portion of the rope.[10] Weaved by sorcerers in his home village, Miguel cherished this tool until he used all of the rope against Satoru Gojo.
    • Although Miguel and Yuta Okkotsu searched Africa for more of the rope used to weave this tool, they were unsuccessful.

Why is Miguel so strong?

  1. When Miguel enables his Prayer Song cursed technique, his strength and physical prowess are fortified, making him especially tough. Not only that, but his technique also takes cursed energy away from his opponent, making them weaker. This makes Miguel especially strong, as he increases his own physical output while simultaneously weakening others’ for harder hits.
    • Further, Miguel is one of the few sorcerers in the story who was trained outside Japan. His techniques are unfamiliar to many opponents, giving him an edge in combat.
