In 2024, Minecraft added 8 new wolf variants, bringing the number of unique wolves you could find in the game up to 9. In this article, we'll go over each wolf variant in Minecraft, including where you can find them, their spawn rate, and how many you might find in a pack. We'll also compare them to what their real-life counterpart might be—though Mojang hasn't officially said what real-life animals they used for inspiration, so our speculation here is just for fun. AshenThe Ashen wolf is a wolf variant that is found in the Snowy Taiga biome, usually in packs of four. It looks like a quintessential wolf, with gray fur on its back and lighter gray fur on its stomach, muzzle, and legs. The chance of finding an Ashen wolf in the Snowy Taiga is 13.33%.^{[1]

BlackBlack wolves are found in the Old Growth Pine Taiga biome, and they usually spawn in packs of two to four. Just like the name suggests, this wolf has completely black fur. The chance of finding a Black wolf in the Old Growth Pine Taiga is 13.33%.^{[5]

PalePale wolves are found in the Taiga, and they usually spawn in packs of four. This is the OG Minecraft wolf, which was renamed when all the wolf variants were released in 2024. RustyRusty wolves can be found in the Sparse Jungle biome in groups of two to four. They have reddish-brown backs with reddish-orange fur on their muzzles and legs. The bottoms of their muzzles, their feet, and inside their ears are a grayish color. The chance of finding a Rusty wolf in the Sparse Jungle is 13.79%.^{[10]

SnowyThe Snowy wolf is found in the Grove biome. Unlike the other wolves on this list, they travel alone and are solitary. Snowy wolves look just like Arctic wolves, which are pure white and found in Arctic climates. The chance of finding a Snowy wolf in the Grove is 7.69%.^{[12]
