Who is NewJeans?

NewJeans is a South Korean girl group under ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE. According to K-pop fandom expert Lauren Eusebio, NewJeans is one of the biggest groups to debut since BTS. They were reaching records and accolades that had never been seen before in the K-pop industry, continues Eusebio, but things got messy with their management and contracts, so they’re not as active anymore.^{[1]

- The lineup was finalized in March 2022, and the group officially debuted on July 22, 2022.
- Their debut album, New Jeans, is the best-selling debut album by a K-pop girl group in South Korea, selling over one million copies.
- The girls have co-written many of their hit songs. For example, Hanni co-wrote “Hype Boy” and “OMG,” Minji co-wrote “Ditto,” and Haerin co-wrote “NewJeans.”
- NewJeans fans are called Bunnies, which is a reference to the bunny imagery they used on the artwork for their debut EP. Their bunny-shaped lightstick is called a Binky Bong!
- NewJeans have explained that their name is a double entendre. Jeans are a timeless piece of clothing, and NewJeans intends to establish themselves as a timeless girl group. The name is also a play on the phrase “new genes,” since the girls are leaders of a new generation of pop music.
