In the following article, we partnered with an anime expert to break down the ending of Demon Slayer from the Infinity Castle arc onward—up through the manga’s final chapter and epilogue!

An Overview of Demon Slayer’s Ending

Anime expert Elijah Martinez says Demon Slayer ends with Tanjiro Kamado defeating the main villain, Muzan, in an epic battle. Tanjiro and his friends settle at the Kamado home; after a timeskip, the major characters’ descendants and reincarnations are shown living in a present-day world free of demons.

   Tanjiro and the demon slayers are drawn to Muzan’s Infinity Castle. According to Martinez, the final portion of the manga focuses on the Infinity Castle Arc, which is about the Demon Slayer Corps fighting against the demon antagonists we’ve known for the entire series. One harrowing night, Muzan attempts to kill the Demon Slayers’ leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, only to be ambushed by the Corps—and, to escape, he throws them all into the Infinity Castle. Before they can get to Muzan, Tanjiro, the Hashira, and the other demon slayers face off against the rest of the Twelve Kizuki…and several bloody battles ensue:

   • Tanjiro and Giyu face off against Akaza (the Upper Rank Three) and kill him, avenging Kyojuro Rengoku.
   • Zenitsu takes down Kaigaku, his former senior demon slayer-turned-Upper Rank Six.
   • Shinobu sacrifices herself to poison Doma (the Upper Rank Two); although Doma absorbs her, he also absorbs the poison in Shinobu’s body, weakening him.
   • Kanao and Inosuke manage to finish off Doma, finishing the job Shinobu (and Kanae Kocho) started.
   • Obanai and Mitsuri track down Nakime (the Upper Rank Rank Four), enabling Yushiro to take control of her—and forcing Muzan to kill her, destroying the Infinity Castle.
   • Gyomei, Sanemi, Genya, and Muichiro fight Kokushibo (the Upper Rank One); Kokushibo’s death marks the end of the Twelve Kizuki.

   The demon slayers regroup to fight Muzan, the Demon King, himself. As the Infinity Castle crumbles and the last of the Twelve Kizuki fall, the surviving demon slayers confront Muzan himself. Lady Tamayo, a demonic physician and ally, sacrifices herself to poison Muzan—and after that, the Hashira and Tanjiro work to keep Muzan in place until sunrise (knowing that he’ll die his final death if exposed to sunlight).

   • Gyomei, Sanemi, Giyu, Obanai, and Mitsuri all fight Muzan, determined to keep him in place.
   • Muzan is unable to defeat his attackers—but they’re unable to defeat him, too; the demon slayers and Muzan remain at a standstill as the sun begins to rise.

   Muzan tries to escape his death, and Tanjiro becomes a demon. A deeply wounded (and swallowed) Tanjiro tries to deal Muzan a final blow from inside the demon’s own body—but, in a desperate attempt to survive, Muzan injects the rest of his blood into Tanjiro, forcing him to transform into the most powerful of all demonkind (and, potentially, the new Demon King).

   • Tanjiro begins attacking his friends and allies in Muzan’s place, with Muzan’s disembodied voice inside him trying to get him to reject his humanity once and for all.

   Tanjiro’s friends help him retain his humanity and defeat Muzan. It’s a combined effort, but it pays off: a newly-human Nezuko arrives and appeals to Tanjiro, begging him to hold onto his humanity. Meanwhile, the rest of the Demon Slayer Corps manage to keep Tanjiro at bay while Kanao uses her final Flower Breathing form to inject him with the cure—and, finally, to make him human again.

   • As Tanjiro once again becomes human, Muzan is destroyed once and for all.
   • Muzan’s death also destroys every demon under his control—leaving Yushiro the only demon in the world left alive.
   • Martinez says, “What makes this ending stand out is the amount of sacrifices that it took to defeat Muzan.” He adds that many of our favorite characters die in this battle, and it leaves a very big impact. “It’s interesting seeing Tanjiro and the rest of the surviving characters deal with these losses.”

What happens at the end of Demon Slayer?

   Demon Slayer’s final chapter is set three months after Muzan’s defeat. The final chapter (Chapter 204) sees Tanjiro recovering from his ordeal, although he’s lost sight in his right eye and most mobility in his left arm. Nezuko is healed and entirely human once more, too, fulfilling Tanjiro’s goal from the beginning of the series. Yushiro comments on how lucky Tanjiro was, given that his demon cells were even more powerful than Nezuko's and Muzan's.

   • Tanjiro also deals with feelings of survivor’s guilt, especially given his own transformation into a demon; he struggles to accept his own role in the demon slayers’ triumph.
   • Tanjiro begs Yushiro to keep living, and by doing so, keep Tamayo’s memory alive as well.

   The Hashira have one last meeting and disband the Demon Slayer Corps. Giyu and Sanemi, the only two Hashira left alive (excepting Tengen, who retired), meet with the remainder of the Ubuyashiki family. Acknowledging the fulfillment of the Demon Slayer Corps’ purpose, they formally disband the organization, and most of the survivors bid farewell to one another.

   • Tanjiro reunites with his mentors Giyu and Urokodaki, sharing a moment with them, as well as Tengen and his wives.
   • Sanemi runs into Nezuko. In their brief interaction, she reminds him of Genya (his little brother); in response, he smiles and pats her on the head.

   Tanjiro and his friends return to live in the Kamado family home. At the end of the chapter, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke make the journey to the Kamado family home, where they settle in. The last few frames show them cleaning up the home, giving the Kamado family a proper burial, and living happily together—before the final frame skips ahead in time with an image of modern-day Japan.

   • This ending also ties up a few remaining plot threads—including Sanemi’s malice and anger toward Nezuko dissipating, the Demon Slayer Corps reaching a peaceful end, and the series’ main characters finding a home together.

Demon Slayer’s Epilogue

   The epilogue features Tanjiro’s descendants in the present day. The next chapter, 205, is an epilogue that skips ahead to the present day with Tanjiro and Kanao’s descendants, Kanata and Sumihiko Kamado. Kanata gets ready for school and tries to rouse his brother (without success); Kanata then walks to school with his relatives, Yoshiteru and Toko—Zenitsu and Nezuko’s great-grandchildren.

   • The manga’s epilogue reveals that Tanjiro Kamado and Kanao Tsuyuri eventually married and had kids, eventually leading to Kanata and Sumihiko’s birth.
   • Similarly, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Nezuko Kamado married and had children, leading to the birth of their descendants, Toko and Yoshiteru.
   • As Martinez explains, we see Tanjiro live a peaceful life until his ambiguous death. We don’t know exactly if he died at an early age from the “mark” or if he lived a long life.

   Reincarnations of fallen characters also appear, living happy lives. After Tanjiro’s death, we jump into the distant future and see that all the characters have been reincarnated, Martinez shares. As Kanata, Yoshiteru, and Toko walk, they encounter various reincarnations of the Hashira in their new lives, having been reborn into the present day. Alternatively, a few characters are shown to have descendants still living (much like Tanjiro and his friends). For instance:

   • Muichiro and his brother are reincarnated as twins being pushed together in a stroller.
   • Tengen’s reincarnation is revealed to have won a gold medal in gymnastics, in honor of his shinobi ancestry.
   • Kanae and Shinobu’s descendants are seen together at a women’s academy.
   • Mitsuri and Obanai’s reincarnations are married with five children, running a restaurant together—fulfilling their dying vows to marry in another life.
   • Gyomei’s reincarnation is a kindergarten teacher, reflecting the way he nurtured a band of orphans in his old life.
   • Martinez adds that this also makes Demon Slayer’s ending stand out. Every character is given a second chance at life in the modern world, heroes and villains. He adds that these reincarnations are also interpreted as descendants of the previous characters.

   Sumihiko heads to school with a friend, Tojuro. Realizing he’s late, Sumihiko gets up and bolts right out his window! He meets up with Tojuro, Rengoku’s descendant; the two make it to school (encountering more reincarnations along the way), but Sumihiko’s mom still gets a phone call about it. And as she talks, the manga reveals that Tanjiro’s sword and earrings remain as mementos of the past, as well as a photo of all who survived the battle against Muzan.

   • The Shinazugawa siblings are partnered up together as cops, and chase Sumihiko when he jumps over the hood of their car.
   • Urokodaki and Kuwajima are shown playing a game of shogi together.
   • Ubuyashiki has become the longest-living Japanese person, breaking his family’s curse of sickness and short lifespans.
   • Giyu, Sabito, and Makomo are reunited as the best of friends.
   • Inosuke and Aoi’s descendant, Aoba Hashibira, is credited with discovering the Blue Spider Lily (the flower that Muzan sought, believing it’d make him immortal).
   • Yushiro is still alive as an enigmatic artist known for his portraits of Tamayo.
   • Relatively minor characters, including Haganezuka, Murata, and Goto, also appear to be reincarnated.

Who dies and survives in Demon Slayer’s ending?

   Muzan, his demons, and many Hashira (and demon slayers) perish. In terms of the bad guys, they’re destroyed—which is the point of defeating Muzan, right? However, the Demon Slayer Corps is very nearly wiped out in their fight to eradicate demonkind, and of the core characters, the only survivors are Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Kanao, Sanemi, Giyu, Tengen, and Nezuko. The following characters die at the end of Demon Slayer:

   • Kagaya Ubuyashiki, along with his wife and two daughters, dies in an explosion triggered to ambush Muzan.
   • Shinobu Kocho dies after being absorbed by Doma.
   • Muichiro Tokito and Genya Shinazugawa perish in the fight against Kokushibo.
   • Mitsuri Kanroji, Obanai Iguro, and Gyomei Himejima all perish in the fight against Muzan, with Mitsuri and Obanai dying in each other’s arms.
   • Tamayo sacrifices herself to administer a powerful drug to Muzan, weakening him.
   • Muzan dies, along with the remaining Twelve Kizuki and all other demons except Yushiro.

The Fan Reaction to Demon Slayer’s Ending

   Fans were divided about the manga’s ending. Some felt like it was a fitting end to Tanjiro’s story, paying homage to the characters who died along the way. Those who were disappointed in the ending mainly felt that way because of the timeskip, as nothing about Tanjiro’s life after leaving the Demon Slayer Corps is revealed. For some, skipping ahead to Tanjiro’s descendants wasn’t as satisfying—they’d rather have seen how Tanjiro’s own life played out.

   • Basically, they hoped the epilogue might chronicle Tanjiro’s life after Muzan’s defeat (as well as Nezuko, Inosuke, Zenitsu, Kanao, Giyu, Sanemi, and so on). Yet it really doesn’t, beyond revealing who eventually married whom.
   • Still, other fans were satisfied with the ending, feeling that it wrapped up the story in a way that shows how life goes on despite tragedy and loss, and that a better future is always possible if you don’t give up. Martinez, for instance, says it’s a “fantastic ending” in his opinion.

Does Demon Slayer have a sad ending?

   Demon Slayer’s ending is bittersweet, but very hopeful. “Bittersweet” might be the best word to describe a good ending, but one that comes at the cost of so many lives. After all, more characters are left dead than alive by the end of the journey. But Demon Slayer has always been about the power of hope and resilience, and that’s what its ending reflects, too. Through all the pain and death, the demon slayers built a brighter future for their descendants.

   • So, while fans definitely shed a tear over Demon Slayer’s ending, it’s not what we’d call a “sad” one.
   • Instead, Demon Slayer’s ending honors the sacrifices of its own characters, proving that everything they did was worth it in the end—and that, for their bravery, they were finally able to find peace and happiness in a better world.
