Demon Slayer fans adore Nezuko for plenty of reasons, and there’s no doubt that her death would be a totally devastating one. So…does Nezuko die in Demon Slayer? She’s transformed into a demon and even nearly burns alive in the sunlight once, but she survives. In the end, Tamayo’s medicine cures her, and Nezuko lives out her life as a human.

No, Nezuko does not die; she ultimately regains her humanity. Demon Slayer doesn’t hesitate to kill off characters in dramatic and intense ways, but thankfully, Nezuko isn’t one of those characters. Blue says she does come close to dying multiple times, though.^{[1]

Nezuko is transformed into a demon at the beginning of the series. In fact, her transformation is essentially the impetus for everything that follows. Her brother, Tanjiro, finds her after their family was massacred by Muzan, the Demon King, and Nezuko was turned into a demon. Desperate for a cure, Tanjiro sets out with Nezuko—and is set on the path of a Demon Slayer in the process.
- Nezuko’s transformation into a demon was a death of sorts; her old, human self was seemingly destroyed, as transformation into a demon is supposed to be permanent.
- Additionally, Nezuko can’t really remember much of her human life as a demon. She vaguely recognizes Tanjiro as someone important, even if she doesn’t totally know why, but she’s largely forgotten her old self.

Nezuko sleeps for an entire two years during Tanjiro’s training. Nezuko basically chooses to go into a hibernation-like sleep so she can survive without feeding on people. While that isn’t the same as getting terribly wounded or transforming into a demon, it’s still a significant amount of time—especially since Sakonji Urokodaki uses subconscious conditioning on Nezuko’s mind while she sleeps.^{[3]

- Urokodaki’s conditioning ensures that Nezuko perceives all humans as her “family” (like she already does with Tanjiro), so she’ll protect them and view other demons as enemies.

A few members of the Demon Slayer Corps want Nezuko dead. And it gets very hostile at certain points. The role of Demon Slayers is to exterminate all demons, and some of the Hashira (the highest-ranking swordsmen in the Corps) have a very black-and-white view of demonkind, refusing to believe that even a demon like Nezuko is worth sparing. Sanemi, the Wind Hashira, goes so far as to bait Nezuko, hoping to provoke the monster within.^{[4]

- During a meeting in the first season, Sanemi actually stabs Nezuko—and then slashes his own arm, trying to drive her into a frenzy with the smell of his blood.
- He hopes that Nezuko will attack him, and then he can put her down. However, he doesn’t get his wish, with Nezuko proving herself different from other demons.

Nezuko nearly dies of sun exposure in the Swordsmith Village arc. Demon Slayer pulled off a “fakeout” death for Nezuko during season three, making it seem like Nezuko really was about to die. Tanjiro is faced with the choice of protecting Nezuko from the sun or stopping the demon Hantengu (who is about to feed on villagers). Nezuko chooses for Tanjiro, knowing how much he’d agonize over the choice; she exposes herself to sunlight and seemingly starts to burn up.^{[5]

- Despite a tense few moments with everyone, including Tanjiro, thinking she was gone, Nezuko doesn’t die. She overcomes her innate demonic sunlight sensitivity, becoming immune to the sun.
- Immunity to sunlight is something the Demon King himself craves—so Nezuko’s development is also an important one for the series.

Nezuko has received injuries that would be fatal if she were human. Nezuko indeed endures what you might call “temporary deaths” in the series—basically, she suffers wounds that should kill her, or maybe do for a moment, but which she ultimately recovers from. One major instance of this happens during her battle with the Upper Rank 6 demon, Daki; Daki mutilates Nezuko’s body to the point of severing her limbs and her head.
- Nezuko demonstrates incredible control over her own blood by reattaching her limbs and head almost immediately after they’re severed. This allows her body to quickly regenerate from the injuries.
- Another instance is Nezuko’s fight with the Lower Rank 5 demon, Rui. Rui heavily lacerates Nezuko’s body with vicious strikes—but, again, Nezuko manages to regenerate and recover.

Nezuko takes a special medicine to become human once more. Tamayo, a demonic healer, prepares and administers the medicine, although it’s unclear if it works at first. Nezuko isn’t initially present for the Demon Slayers’ attack on the Infinity Castle, but she senses something wrong—and, even though the medicine hasn’t taken effect yet, goes to help Tanjiro. As she goes, her human memories begin flooding back, and she gradually reverts to her human self.^{[6]

- In the process, Nezuko finally recalls her family’s fate and everything Tanjiro has done for her since.
- Those recovered memories are overwhelming for Nezuko; she becomes overcome with emotion—but that same emotion is probably what hastens her return to humanity.

Nezuko endures a tremendous amount of trauma throughout the series. We’ve already mentioned a lot of it, beginning with the forced transformation into a demon. Throughout the series, Nezuko has had to endure her family’s (except for Tanjiro) murder, her own corruption, and the loss of control over her body when demonic instinct takes over. She’s nearly provoked into violent acts (by a Hashira, no less) and sustains painful burns in an act of drastic self-sacrifice. That is to say: Nezuko is a prime example of resilience in Demon Slayer.
- For all the horror Nezuko goes through, it’s hope that saves her. Her brother, Tanjiro, never gives up on her—and Nezuko doesn’t give up, either,

Nezuko’s return to humanity changes the outcome of the battle with Muzan. Spoiler alert for the climactic final battle of the Demon Slayer series—but Tanjiro himself briefly turns into a demon while fighting Muzan. Tanjiro gains a lot of the same amazing power that Nezuko has as a demon (including sunlight immunity) and nearly loses himself to the transformation. Thankfully, his allies administer a cure, and Nezuko herself helps Tanjiro fight off the demon within.
- While the Hashira fight to defeat demon Tanjiro, Nezuko begs him not to let Muzan’s will overcome him.
- Her pleas get through to Tanjiro, who’s fighting Muzan’s will within his own mind. Without her intervention, Tanjiro might’ve succumbed and become the new Demon King.

Fan-Made Alternate Demon Slayer Timelines

In some fan-made alternate timelines, Nezuko does die. Again, this is all just theoretical speculation—but sometimes Demon Slayer fans wonder what would’ve happened if Nezuko didn’t survive the series. After all, her survival as a demon was Tanjiro’s driving force to become a Demon Slayer and find a cure…so what direction would his life have taken if she’d died with their family, or from sun exposure later on?
- In one Reddit thread, fans speculated that Tanjiro might never have become a Demon Slayer had Nezuko died—or, if he had, he’d just spend his life slaying demons (with Muzan’s rise and defeat never taking place).
  - In this alternate version of events, Tanjiro might not have developed the same empathy for demons…so his personality might become harsher and less merciful.
- Then, there’s Nezuko’s near-death from sunlight. Fans speculate that if she’d actually died, it might’ve broken Tanjiro’s spirit for good—to the point of leaving him nothing else to live for.^{[7]

Nezuko, now a human, ends up starting a family with Zenitsu. The fandom’s “best girl” gets her happy ending. As a human, she’s able to live out her life as she pleases—and while not too much is known about the specifics of her life post-series, she ultimately marries Zenitsu. The two settle down and eventually have a child, able to live a better life after the fall of demonkind.
- Zenitsu has a very well-documented crush on Nezuko throughout the Demon Slayer series, so their “canon couple” status by the end of the series wasn’t too surprising!

Nezuko presumably dies of old age, with descendants who live on. Demon Slayer’s main story ends after Muzan’s defeat, not really delving into detail about the Demon Slayer Corps’ lives post-Muzan, so we can’t definitively say when or how Nezuko actually dies. In the epilogue, 100 years later, her descendants (Toko and Yoshiteru Agatsuma) are happy, healthy teenagers coming into their own, with Nezuko herself having passed away at some point previously.
- Based on the story, we can probably assume Nezuko lived out her life and died of old age (or otherwise natural causes) after the end of Demon Slayer.
- So, technically, she does die…but, thankfully, it’s off-screen and after the end of the series in a totally natural way.
