What Is SCP-3125, or the Cosmic Starfish?

SCP-3125 is a giant, 5-fingered entity that can potentially wipe out humanity. Even worse, it destroys anyone who learns about it, and the SCP Foundation has to maintain a special inverted containment procedure in an attempt to defeat it. We’re taking a deep dive into The Escapee (also known as the Cosmic Starfish), including what it is, how inverted containment works, what it looks like, and the cultish religion that worships it.

Overview of SCP-3125

SCP-3125 (aka The Escapee or the Cosmic Starfish) is a conceptual identity from another universe. It partially resides in our universe, killing anyone who learns about it and spreading ideas so aggressive that infected people lose their humanity. Inverted containment is used to preserve knowledge of this entity.

SCP-3125 is a highly contagious idea that can end reality. It originated in (and possibly created) a different reality, but after that reality was destroyed, it partially invaded ours. It’s both memetic (it spreads quickly) and anti-memetic (it destroys anyone who finds out about it). Unfortunately, the human mind can not comprehend the ideas contained in 3125, so anyone infected by it loses their humanity.

How is SCP-3125 contained?

SCP-3125 is subject to an inverted containment protocol. It’s nigh-omnipresent, meaning it exists everywhere, except for places where it’s been intentionally excluded. Containment Site 3125 is one such place—a 10 × 15 × 3 m (32.8 × 49.2 × 9.8 ft) room that’s protected by alternating layers of lead, soundproofing, and telepathic shielding.^{[1]

- Every 42 days, a senior member of the Antimemetics Division must visit Site 3125. Only one person can enter at a time; no information from inside the room can be brought out; and the researcher must have their memory erased before exiting the airlock.^{[2]

- Inside the room, the researchers leave notes, drawings, and recordings on a laptop to pass on information from one visit to the next. This is the only way to observe (and potentially defeat) SCP-3125.
- Most of SCP-3125’s history has been erased, so no one is really sure how or when the containment unit was built.

SCP-3125 is a memetic concept that spreads from one mind to another. 3125’s original reality was extremely hostile compared to ours. In fact, it was so different that the human mind does not have natural defenses against these aggressive ideas. So when SCP-3125 inhabits a human mind, it transforms them to the point that they are no longer recognizably human.^{[3]

- People infected by SCP-3125 do not change outwardly; rather, the distinct lack of human thought and emotion that changes them.
- If SCP-3125 fully materializes in our world, it will spread so rapidly that humanity (and related concepts like “family” and “community”) will be completely extinguished in about 4–12 hours.

SCP-3125 also attacks and kills anyone who learns about it. One of the biggest obstacles in defeating SCP-3125 is that learning about this entity causes it to observe you. It then sends antimemetic spider-like creatures to kill you, along with anyone who thinks like you and anyone who will remember you, like close friends and family.^{[4]

What does SCP-3125 look like?

SCP-3125 looks like a giant starfish or a human hand. Marion Wheeler describes the appearance of SCP-3125 in “Case Colourless Green.” It has five fingers, each pointing in a different direction, but there’s no wrist or arm. It also has a pentagon-shaped mouth in the center. The entity is symmetrical.
- That said, SCP-3125 can change its shape at will. For instance, it’s been said to appear as a single giant eye or in human form.
- SCP-3125 is associated with the colors colorless green, blue, and blood red.

SCP-3125 is the deity worshiped by the Fifth Church. Fifthism is a cult-like religion that appears in the SCP universe. Fifthists worship a deity known as the Cosmic Starfish, which is generally believed to be SCP-3125. The principles of Fifthism are found in the book “Star Signals,” or “Five-Step Star Signal Method”—also known as SCP-1425.^{[5]

- Fifthists believe that people should not have free will. However, this belief is likely influenced by the fact that Fifthists are all infected by SCP-3125.
- The Ancient Cult of the Fifth Star communicated with 3125 by using SCP-2517 (a type of psychedelic fungus) to protect their brains.

Who defeated SCP-3125?

Marion Wheeler ultimately defeated SCP-3125. Marion Wheeler was a senior researcher with the SCP Foundation’s Antimemetics Division. In the SCP story “Case Colourless Green,” Marion hit herself on the head to resist the amnestic gas in the airlock so she could remember what she read inside the unit. Her efforts to resist SCP-3125 culminate in “Tombstone,” when Bart Hughes and Adam Wheeler transform Marion into the countermeme weapon WHITE LIGHT, ultimately destroying SCP-3125.
- Originally, the Antimemetics Division planned to defeat SCP-3125 with Bart Hughes’ countermeme weapon, the Irreality Amplifier. However, the project would have been costly and time-consuming, and the logistics of keeping it completely secret made it a nonviable plan.
