If you’ve ever played Jujutsu Shenanigans, you might have seen comments in the chat where one player calls another “passive.” You might have even been called a passive player yourself! But… what does that mean? For this article, we partnered with a Roblox streamer to help us break down exactly what it means, how to use it, and whether you should play passive.

How do you play passive in JJS?

Instead of rushing in and attacking right away, a passive player hangs back and waits for their opponent to strike first or make a mistake. Then, they hit when the other player is vulnerable.

   Playing passive means taking a more defensive stance. According to Bridges, “playing passive” means playing cautiously and waiting for the right time to strike. Instead of rushing in and attacking right away, passive players hang back. They wait for their opponent to strike first or make a mistake, then they hit when the other player is vulnerable. It can be an effective fighting style, especially if you’re playing with a character who has ranged attacks.

   • For example, Bridges says “if you see two people one-v-one-ing, you might want to wait until they [have] a lower health.”
   • Bridges also offers a common example of a passive strategy in Fortnite: “[A player] will hide in a bush, wait for the right time to shoot at the player when it's the last zone, [and] try to get kills.”
   • That said, there’s a stigma against passive players in the JJS fanbase—they’re often criticized for “being scared” or “running” from the fight.
   • Note: Playing passive isn’t the same thing as a character’s passive stats. During Awakening, characters gain special traits called passives that do things like increase their blocks or damage.

Strategies for Playing Passive in JJS

   Learn your character’s moveset. When you switch to a new character, jump into a private server and test out your moves against a dummy. Get a feel for the timing of the hits and what they do. Master your block, as well. If you’re confident in your base moveset, it will be easier to attack when your enemy leaves themselves vulnerable.

   • Characters with ranged attacks, like Megumi, Mahito, and Choso, are most effective for passive players—but you can play passive with any character.

   Keep a mid-range distance from your opponent. Don’t go too far away from the other player—you want to be able to attack when the time is right. Just try not to let them get too close to you, especially if they have strong melee attacks.

   • Keeping your distance while still trying to attack is called “zoning,” and it’s a little different than playing passive. When playing passive, you generally don’t attack until after your opponent does.

   Punish your opponent after they strike. Most moves in JJS have a little endlag, or a short recovery period. If your opponent tries to hit you and misses, they’ll be vulnerable. That’s the time to hit them with a solid attack.

   • You can also block a front dash attack, then attack the other player.
   • Once you land an attack, try to chain it into a combo to maximize your damage.

   The fights take longer to finish. Win or lose, fights with passive players can take a really long time. When you’re playing passive, you’re working to avoid getting hit by the other player, but that means it’s harder to get a hit on them, as well.

   • In the fast-paced world of online gaming, some people get impatient with drawn-out fights. Other players may prefer to leave the area rather than battle with you if you’re playing passive.
   • For example, this TikTok from @tetsuyaanpakuto00 shows a player running across the map to avoid hits, slowing down a 1v1 match.

   You might be criticized by other players. There’s definitely a stigma against playing passive in the JJS community. Passive players are sometimes assumed to be inexperienced or scared to lose. However, plenty of players choose a passive approach, preferring the strategy of planning their moves to quick, reactive attacks.

   • If you like playing passive, don’t worry too much about what anyone else thinks.
   • In this TikTok form @goldenchan1, passive players who try to avoid damage are described as being “more annoying” than teamers or toxic players.

   Some characters are very effective against passive players. Characters with block breakers can easily bypass a passive player’s defenses, doing enough damage to end the match in just a few hits. And characters with ranged attacks or a lot of speed can still hit even if you try to stay away from the other player.

   • According to this TikTok from @xayo_rblx, characters like Yuji, Yuka, Yuta, Naoya, Higuruma, and Todo are especially useful for beating passive players.
