Where Hidden Leaf ninjas land on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
PDF download Download Article

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) determines personality types based on four different mental preference pairs (Introverted vs. Extroverted, Sensing vs. Intuition, Feeling vs. Thinking, and Judging vs. Perceiving). We'll analyze the main and supporting characters in Naruto, and list an MBTI type for each.

Naruto MBTI Chart

  • Naruto Uzumaki (ENFP): An idealistic campaigner who dreams of building a better future and connecting with others.
  • Sasuke Uchiha (INTJ): An independent architect who uses his logic and analytical skills to take revenge on the ninja world.
  • Sakura Haruno (ESFJ): A caring consul who won’t hesitate to stand by and protect those she cares about.
  • Kakashi Hatake (INTP): A logical yet unorthodox teacher who has a knack for inventing new jutsu, copying jutsu, and formulating battle strategy.
  • Hinata Hyuga (ISFJ): A timid yet passionate defender who will do anything for those she loves.

MBTI Types of Naruto’s Main Characters

  1. Naruto is the definition of an ENFP—a campaigner who has idealist hopes for a better future. He also has a strong desire to connect with others, which is another hallmark ENFP trait. Perhaps the most noticeable ENFP trait, though, is Naruto’s heroism, as he is always willing to talk things out with others to prevent conflict and ensure everyone is safe.[1]
    • Just because Naruto’s willing to talk things out doesn’t mean he won’t put his fists up. At the end of the day, he’ll do anything to keep his village and loved ones safe.
  2. Sasuke Uchiha is Naruto’s rival in both form and MBTI type. Whereas Naruto is an idealist who sees the best in people, Sasuke is an independent architect who doesn’t trust easily. He’s also incredibly logical and analytical, which he uses to his advantage, going as far as to launch an all-out assault on the Five Kage just to get to Danzo Shimura during the Five Kage Summit arc.[2]
    • While other INTJs tend to use their skills for self-improvement and future-planning, Sasuke uses his skills in an attempt to avenge his fallen clan members and build a new ninja world from the ashes of old.
    • Spoiler: After Sasuke’s defeat at the end of Naruto: Shippuden, he becomes a much more standard INTJ, acting as Naruto’s sole shadow and keeping things in order outside of the village while staying under the radar

  3. Like other ESFJs, Sakura’s main focus is the safety of others above all else. Even when they seem like a lost cause (like Sasuke for much of the series), Sakura is willing to stand by others, as she sees the good in them. Her career path as a medical ninja reflects this, as she dedicates years of her life to keeping others safe on the battlefield through a combination of healing jutsu and raw strength.[3]
  4. As the leader of Team 7 and the famous Copy Ninja, Kakashi is an unusual INTP. While others would rather make new inventions or pursue the sciences, Kakashi prefers to invent new jutsu and come up with ways to best enemies in combat. While unorthodox, his methods often prove to be effective, especially in moments when it counts, showing his true skill as a thinker.
  5. ISFJs are known for their introverted personality and strong desire to help others, which describes Hinata to a T. Throughout the series, she’s known for being timid and reserved, but when it comes to people she loves, she doesn’t hesitate to show the Feeling in her ISFJ personality and fight for them, even if the opponent seems like an impossible match-up.[4]
  6. Shikamaru is Naruto’s staple Logician, as he’s always coming up with plans and weighing the different ways to handle a situation. Like other INTPs, he doesn’t need to work at this hard, as it comes naturally to him. He often daydreams and hopes for a quiet life, while simultaneously stepping up to the plate and showing the audience just how much of a mastermind he is. He’s a true thinker, even when he doesn’t want to be![5]
  7. As Naruto’s mentor, Jiraiya firmly embodies the ENFP personality type. He’s a man who dreams of a better world, so much so that he was willing to guide different ninjas whom he had believed to be the Child of Prophecy, a figure said to bring great change to the world.[6] Despite his untimely demise, his vision as a Campaigner—a free-spirited man who sees the best in the world—pushed many characters in the series to adopt the same dreams.
  8. Lady Tsunade is all about the thrill, just like other ESTPs. As the Entrepreneur, she’s a bold woman who always lives in the moment, and although she doesn’t have any major goals or aspirations, she still does a dang good job leading and protecting the Hidden Leaf Village. She uses her resourceful mind to handle incoming village threats, and she doesn’t hesitate to go after them in any way she can. She truly lives up to her ESTP title!
  9. Itachi Uchiha works from the shadows, advocating for a better ninja world even if he has to be the one to bear all of its sins. Although he killed his entire clan, Itachi did so under the calculated measure that Sasuke would be protected and the Uchiha and Hidden Leaf Village wouldn’t descend into Civil War, showing that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to ensure everyone’s overall safety. That’s the definition of an INFJ.
